Pod in the sun

General

  • Luxury site in south-west Cornwall, a 10-minute drive from Hayle
  • Several top surf beaches between 10 minutes and half an hour by car
  • A five-minute drive to village pubs and shop

Surfer? Hiker? Beachcomber or gallery browser? Whatever you’re into you’ll be near it from a comfy base at Kernow Camping Pods, in the south west of Cornwall about 10 minutes’ drive from the town and beach of Hayle.

The squiggle of land that represents the UK’s most south westerly point is home to a mix of beaches, walking terrain, busy harbour towns and quiet villages. There's loads to see and do around here, which is why the clever lot of Kernow Camping Pods have created swish resting spots for the times in between. The pods are bright and roomy, cosy when Atlantic winds are blowing and cool in the summer, with USB charging points and lighting (wind powered) and comfy sofas that become double beds; bedding is included.

There’s storage space on site for bikes, kayaks and surfboards; the showers are pumping hot in the mixed communal washrooms and there are separate male and female toilets. It’s a five-minute drive to two fine pubs with food, and a small general shop.

Barbecues are welcome and while it may be hard to get too enthused about washing up, the outdoor scullery area on this site has possibly the best views from any kitchen sink anywhere...

We had a lovely time staying at Kernow Camping Pods. The pods were clean and cosy with electric lighting and usb charge points; we were worried they would get cold at night, but that definitely wasn’t a problem.
The social area was also lovely, with a summer house and outdoor heating. There are some games and camping equipment in the summer house, as well as a stove - all very useful.

    Disliked:

We weren’t aware there was any cooking utensils provided, so we brought our own (cups, plates, gas hob etc).
A slightly bumpy ride to get to the site.
While it’s lovely to stay on an eco friendly site, I missed having flush toilets!

The pods were so wonderful to stay in during our short trip to Cornwall. They are ideally located a short drive away from so many great attractions. The scenery around the pods was spectacular and the communal facilities were always clean, tidy and ready to use. The pods were always warm and cosy in the colder evenings. We loved our stay at Kernow Camping Pods and can't wait to return

    Disliked:

There were few signs to direct us to the site (look out for a small sign that says K.C.P as you drive up a very narrow path!! But typing the postcode from the website into google maps directed us there okay! And it is well worth the bumpy drive to get there!

View is fantastic! Pod and facilities were clean and well equipped with usb chargers, lights and comfy bed/ sofa. In the communal area there is cooking equipment, games and a telescope. The shower and toilets are cleaned regularly and a fire pit and pizza oven are great additions.

Location, you can pretend to the last people on earth here. Pods are cosy with a comfy bed. You don't need to bring pots or pans, crockery or cutlery which is very convenient. We took an extra duvet, only needed it once (3 degrees at night in June!). Fab views. We had the place to ourselves which made cooking and using the shower very easy (only one shower and not much room in the hut, but if you're all mates it would work really well).

Local attractions

If you’re into riding the waves, then strap your board to your roofrack (or even your back) and make for any one of a dozen surfie hotspots around the coast: Hayle is the nearest, 10 minutes’ drive away, but aficionados may have a preference for Carbis Bay or Sennen Cove, 15 minutes and half an hour away.

If you prefer to experience the Atlantic from the dry interior of a boat, St Ives (15 minutes) is the place for sea fishing trips and boat excursions. It’s also brimming over with shops and eateries, with an arty buzz thanks to the Tate Gallery and the Barbara Hepworth Museum.

If you’re after other kinds of history, it’s a half-hour drive to explore the subterranean stories of Geevor Tin Mine, and the Iron Age ruins of Maen Castle. It’s also about half an hour to Land’s End, where you can have your picture taken and send a postcard. The 630-mile South West Coast Path passes right through the famed final point; you can also access this fab walking route 10 minutes from the site.

You can of course go even bit further westwards should you wish – it’s a 15-minute drive to Penzance for boats out to the Scilly Isles.
