  • Private yurt with a woodfired hot tub in a rural Cornwall setting
  • Private cabin next door with shower and flushing toilet
  • A 15-minute walk from the famed 13th-century Pandora Inn
Might you like being on your lovely ownsome and knowing no one else is around? So you and/or your partner can snore with impunity, be as noisy as you like, walk around as nature intended and with not a stitch more... or let the kids shriek as loudly as they want without incurring glares from other guests? Welcome to the private yurt at Albion Farm Yurt, on a Cornish farm on the edge of Mylor near Falmouth. The owners of this superbly solitary yurt have perched it as an environmentally-friendly alternative to a holiday cottage, in a field facing southwest and with easy access to the local village (although fret not, the yurt is secluded enough that no one will see you prancing around in your birthday suit). It’s all surrounded by trees among a large grassy area and local wildlife. It’s rather clever too – the yurt is handmade using a traditional Mongolian design and coppiced wood, with a woodburning stove and gas cooker inside. The sides can be peeled back to let the air in, and there’s a roof light too for yurt-based stargazing. It also comes with its own woodfired hot tub. Campfires are positively encouraged here, cooking and eating equipment is provided and a fridge and freezer are close to hand). A cabin right next to the yurt has a flushing toilet, shower, basin, electric lighting and a towel rail. If you're part of a group or a couple of families, the owners will happily allow a few extra tents alongside the yurt. Albion Farm is 10 minutes’ walk from Mylor village and its pub, shops, butcher and fishmonger; the waterside 13th-century and rather superb Pandora Inn is a 15-minute stroll away along a creekside path, and the harbour to gaze enviously at yachts is nicely handy too.

Cornish yurt

Liked: Beautiful, secluded, well-equipped yurt. Perfectly private and ideal for relaxing or exploring the area. Very warm welcome with cream tea. Attentive but not intrusive hosts. Lovely hot tub. Cosy log burner in the yurt. Towels and bed linen provided. Lots to do with lovely local walks and pubs/shops nearby. Very dog friendly.

Disliked: The only thing I didn’t like were the big spiders at night in the toilet building as I’m a big arachnophobe. That’s just nature and to be expected. It wouldn’t stop me going back.

Cornish yurt

Liked: The yurt is completely private with no properties overlooking it. It is spacious, clean and has everything you need for a self catering holiday. The bed is very comfortable. Some wood is provided for the Woodfired hot tub, open fire and log burner (extra wood is available to buy from the host or village shop), candles and lanterns are provided for lighting at night, there are also solar lights on the outside of yurt decking. The hot tub is spacious (plenty of room for 2 adults, would probably fit 3) and getting in at night after a long day exploring was bliss! We loved the large table to sit at outside to eat or watch the stars at night. The bathroom is only a few meters away from the yurt and has electricity, it was also very clean and spacious. There is a fabulous village shop around a 15 minute walk away which is very well stocked and also two pubs within walking distance that do food (we didn't eat at either but did have a drink). The host was very friendly and responsive to messages but not intrusive in any way.

Disliked: We didnt really dislike anything! The only issue i would say we had is the hot tub does take around 2.5-3 hours to heat once you light the fire (we aren't experienced fire lighters!), and it's a full time job keeping on top of adding wood to the fire to keep it going. You do need to use quite a lot of wood to get it to the correct temperature (we spent around £50 on wood/kindling/firelighters for the hot tub and the wood burner inside the yurt over a 3 night stay and we were out most of the time, your first basket of logs are free, kiln dried logs are then £10 a bag from the host or £8.50 from the village shop). We arrived around 5.30pm on our first night and didn't manage to get in the tub until around 10pm so it would be a great idea for the host to ask if we wanted to get in the tub on arrival and for the host to light the fire to start the heating process. This is only a small issue but would have made the stay even better!

Local attractions

Mylor is a very pretty spot with spectacular views – not surprising for Cornwall really – and gorgeous coastline, beaches, walks along creeks, the South West Coast Path, acres of green gardens and piles of history are all close to hand. Both Falmouth and Truro are five miles away. From Mylor, catch a passenger ferry to Falmouth; you can get to the fishing village of St Mawes by ferry from here too. The King Harry Ferry has all-day discount tickets where you can park the car for free in Falmouth and hop off anywhere you like on the journey around Truro, Falmouth and the Roseland Peninsula (possibly not into the river). Culture peeps have St Ives, Tate St Ives and the Minack Theatre at Penzance within 40–50 minutes’ drive. Or pootle around Falmouth’s Pendennis Castle, one of Henry Eight’s many calling cards around the south and south-west coast.
