  • Laidback Cornish farm site a quarter of a mile from the A39
  • Half a mile from The Camel Trail; Bodmin Moor ten minutes' drive
  • Basic amenities; dogs, campfires and barbecues allowed
Cornwall is perhaps as close as it gets to a sure-fire way to beat the blues. And whether your preference is for reinvigorating treks over Bodmin Moor or visiting the coves and caves of the north Cornish coast, you should consider making Tregoodwell Park Farm the place to do it. This laidback farm site is in the countryside just to the south of the A39 road, around half a mile from Camelford and its cafés, shops and takeaways. This site also has strong potential as a base for taking on The Camel Trail, a splendidly scenic 18-mile route linking Padstow, Wadebridge and Bodmin, all over largely flat and car-free terrain. As a relaxed rural spot, Tregoodwell Park Farm welcomes commercial vehicles, campfires, barbecues and well-behaved dogs. Guests with (or without) furry family members have lots of options for setting out on adventurous hikes – one popular option is walking from base to the top of Brown Willy Tor, Cornwall's highest hill. There are also both dog-friendly and no-pets beaches on the north Cornwall coast, roughly five miles away. As far as facilities go, this site has a washing-up area, shower access and composting toilets. Parking by the pitches means there’s no need to worry about lugging your gear around, while easy access to the A39 facilitates smooth arrivals and departures.

Local attractions

For fishing, birdwatching or a gentle stretch of the legs, make for Crowdy Reservoir (five minutes' drive), a local waterside spot with angling opportunities, picnic tables, trails and a bird hide. This is a trout lake where you can fish for free between March and October with an Environment Agency licence (permits can be picked up from Spar supermarket in Camelford, a five-minute drive away). There's also Delabole Quarry (15 minutes) – once the biggest artificial hole in Europe, this former slate mine is now a wildlife haven, with highly-recommended walking tours on weekday afternoons between May and August. You could also throw into the mix natural landmarks on Bodmin Moor like Colliford Lake (30 minutes) or gorgeous Golitha Falls (40 minutes). To keep the kids sweet, take them to play knights and damsels at Tintagel Castle (15 minutes). There's also a toy museum in the village that'll likely be of interest. Just down the road is Big Dunk's Foot Golf (15 minutes), an excellent opportunity to try out the fab hybrid sport that is football golf. (For the traditional, small-ball kind, head five minutes down the A39 to Bowood Park Golf Club.)

Bell tent (five person)

Liked: Fabulous glamping in a bell tent No extra frills but definitely tranquil (we had the place to ourselves!) Sean & jacqui are very lovely, nothing too much trouble but equally leave you alone… We had expected extra beds so asked for extra on our arrival & they sorted it straight away without a problem. Lovely bumblebee sheets too!!!!! Clean & tidy. Lovely hot shower.

Disliked: If site had been full (or lots of children) we wondered if the toilet (single) wud be a nightmare. Wud rather 1 shower but more toilets. Bring your own loo roll keep in your tent as toilet not water tight (we had storm antoni & a LOT of rain!)

Bell tent (three person)

Liked: Myself and my 2 young daughters stayed here for 2 nights. The owner was friendly, understanding and accommodating of the dramas we had on route however this did not impact our stay whatsoever. The site was quite and clean. The field was enclosed so my girls could run around and be safe meaning I had not too worry. The tent was lovely and spacious, clean and the beds were so comfy. There was plenty of charcoal and firewood provided for our stay. The tent had a lantern and fairy lights. The outdoor showers on site were lovely and hot!! The village was a short walk away with a lovely park, shops and places to eat. There was Surrounding walks through the village and up too the moores. We will definitely be back again!!

Disliked: Nothing to dislike.
