Proper Camping: Pitches

General

  • Back to basics family campsite just off the A39
  • A quarter of an hour's drive from Port Isaac and Tintagel
  • Friendly dogs welcome; open campfires allowed

Anyone after a bit of outdoor relaxing should give Proper Camping's photos a proper inspection – this secluded rural site looks out over the kind of hilly Cornish countryside that inspires hours of drowsy daydreaming as you kick back in your camping chair…

Even by Cornish standards, the location of Proper Camping is impressive – set just off the A39 road and half a mile from the village of Helstone, it's a quarter of an hour's drive from stunning coastal spots like Port Isaac and Tintagel. Trundling along the Camel Trail by bike from Wadebridge (15 minutes), wandering over the wilds of Bodmin Moor (from 10 minutes) and catching waves in the surfers’ paradise that is Newquay (35 minutes) are all equally easily arranged.

On the facilities front, this family-friendly site keeps it simple with four eco toilets, a water point and two hot showers.

Friendly dogs are allowed at Proper Camping, but please keep them on leads and under control at all times – the site's free-range chickens and ducks will thank you for it. Open campfires are allowed, but please follow instructions from site staff if you're planning on this option.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Dogs are not allowed in the accommodation units.

Bookings must not consist of more than 2 different households.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

No naked flames are allowed inside the hired accommodation units.

Discount cards and gift vouchers cannot be applied to bookings made via Pitchup.com.

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Group bookings of 2 or more units (e.g. tent, touring caravan, motorhome or accommodation hire) travelling together are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

No electric barbecues allowed.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

It was great. The bed in the tent was very comfortable. A stove in a tent is simply a dream. Certainly no one in the tent will be cold. We also had garden furniture, a table in the tent, a shoe box and a small fridge. Each family has its own toilet. I really recommend

Stuart was an excellent and knowledgeable host, and made us feel welcome and had great recommendations for the local area. Everything was great: Location, views, amenities provided for the bell tent (own next to pitch parking, own fire pit, own loos). It was perfect for us and we cannot wait to go back next year!

    Disliked:

Outdoor shower - but this is minor and if staying on a hot day not bad at all! Close to a main road so if occasional traffic noises bother you this may be something to consider.

We loved our stay in the bell tent! Amazing spot overlooking fields and woodland with a great gazebo and fire pit to enjoy. Everything from the driving directions sent in advance to the spotless tent ready for us on arrival, was very well thought out. Beds made up, logs for the log burner in place, a clean portaloo and even cooler packs for the cool box - couldn't ask for more. We even spotted a deer emerging from trees at the foot of the lower field.

Everything about our stay. Lovely set up, really idyllic views. A lovely spot that was quiet and relaxing and really well kept. The tent we stayed in was really clean and extremely comfy. The wood burner inside was delightful and kept the place super cosy during the nighttime. The fire pit and seating area outside was a really nice place to sit and have dinner and breakfast. The place had toilets, outdoor shower, outdoor tap, all really clean and well kept, places to charge phones and laptops and on site bins. Such an affordable and lovely place to stay. Enjoyed by all of us.

A beautiful bell tent with comfortable air beds and a lovely log burner inside. Beautiful views and bell tent set away from other campers. Just what we needed, privacy and a lovely view of the hills. Close to Harlyn Bay where we spent a lovely sunny day in the sunshine with warm waters in August. Also Tintagel castle! Basic facilities but absolutely wonderful for a couple of nights or so. Free charging facilities for phones etc. Lovely owners who made us feel welcome and let the children feed the chickens. Highly recommend!

The road noise in the morning was a little disturbing, the site is literally just off the A39 as can be seen on the map, traffic was quite heavy in the morning.

Local attractions

Assemble your bikes, helmets and assorted cycling gear before setting off to Proper Camping – the site's within 10 minutes' drive of the cracking coastal and inland scenery that lines the Camel Trail, a car-free bike path that runs from Wadebridge in the north (15 minutes) down to Bodmin in the middle of the moor (20 minutes).

Surf's up at several locations along the north Cornwall coast, with Trebarwith Strand (10 minutes), Polzeath (20 minutes) and Newquay (35 minutes) high up on the bucket list of most board sport fans travelling through these parts. Other seaside locations like Port Isaac (15 minutes) and Tintagel (15 minutes) are renowned for their heritage and history – the former is a traditional fishing village with the architecture and harbour to prove it, while the latter is home to towering Tintagel Castle where the legendary King Arthur is said to have held his court.

For something to keep the small sorts smiling, get locked up at Bodmin Jail (20 minutes), take a trip to see the animals at Newquay Zoo (35 minutes) or drop them off for go-karting, zipwires and other high-speed attractions at Adrenalin Quarry (50 minutes).
