  • No-frills campsite on a farm five minutes’ drive from the A30
  • A half-hour’s drive from St Ives and Newquay’s surfing beaches
  • Animals, Great Flat Lode Trail access, King Edward Mine Museum views
A laidback Cornwall campsite in eight acres of countryside on a working farm, Pioneer Billys is right next to the King Edward Mine Museum and a short walk from the Great Flat Lode Trail (both great ways to get to grips with this area’s industrial history). This is a peaceful hideaway for families, walkers, mountain bikers and nature lovers – in fact anybody who fancies chilling for a few days around a campfire. The farm is home to the Garwood family, as well as Derek the donkey, Muffin the Shetland pony and friendly pygmy goats. There’s plenty of local wildlife in the fields too, and several popular Cornish beaches are within 20 minutes’ drive. It’s only a five-minute drive to Camborne’s shops for bits and pieces to grill on the barbecue (bring your own gear from home), but if you’d like a break from cooking, there are loads of traditional Cornish pubs, restaurants and takeaways within a few minutes’ drive too. The site is a five-minute drive from the A30, so getting out and about to the various corners of Cornwall should be a doddle.

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked: We received a really warm welcome upon arrival - the owner is a really lovely, down-to-earth lady - we could have stayed chatting to her all night! The toilets and showers were very clean. Really decent showers providing hot water so you can actually get clean! The goats were really friendly & provided us with entertainment. Stunning location with some nice views, not too far from shops etc.

Disliked: The donkey & the pony had gone, but after hearing their story, it is nice to know they ended up in a good home together!

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Very welcoming host, massive pitches with grass that had been cut but also collected which I feel is a massive bonus. The pitch wasn’t level so definitely needed levellers. Facilities, although dated were spotless. Hot shower, in fact it was too hot and I couldn’t seem to make it cooler!

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: This was our second stay here. A lovely warm welcome again from Carole. Nice and quiet until the donkey sees his breakfast on the way then everyone knows about it! Very funny! We have family in the area so will be visiting regularly and we are both more than happy to continue using Pioneer Billy's.

Disliked: Only 2 bathrooms with no separate toilets, Even thought the site was nowhere near full we had to queue. Could "Vacant/Engaged" signs be put on the bathroom doors? If they are shut you have no way of knowing if someone is inside. This can mean either queueing when one is empty or trying to go in when occupied (and other people trying to get in when you're in there).

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: We stayed at Pioneer Billy’s during Easter half term and found the location was pretty great. We were just outside a town (Camborne) with shops, restaurants etc and fairly close to both major and minor roads which made grocery shopping and getting around Cornwall quite easy. The site is clean, well kept and the owners were great! They were kind, helpful and accommodating every time we spoke with them. Derek the donkey, Muffin the pony, the goats and the tent visiting chickens were great though. To hear Derek’s story from the owner and hear him regularly “eee oorrr” is wonderful. The entertainment value that all the animals had on the kids during our time at the site was great and the owners own children helped keep the kids busy for hours which was brilliant.

Disliked: We felt that the facilities were lacking unfortunately. This was because there was only one basic communal toilet/wash room available for most of our stay. This was because the second toilet/wash room was undergoing maintenance and had been closed. Hot water was also lacking. Showers were always luke warm, were never hot and the rooms were very cold. When using the washing up area there was no hot water through a tap, instead we had to use the “very advanced water heater” which was a kettle on a gas camping stove - this went missing on the last day which was annoying. The advanced washing up heater is probably “added character” to site and it didn’t bother me too much but others might not enjoy the charm. For us, the Luke warm showers were the biggest gripe, along with not being able to book an electric pitch on the pitch up site even though we were allocated an available electric pitch. I’d have quite happily paid the extra £20 for an electric hook up to have use of mains electric.

From the manager: Sorry about the situation of the luke warm shower, had we been informed it would have given us the opportunity to rectify this and unfortunately the one broken boiler is out of my control is awaiting parts and fitting.

Local attractions

At Pioneer Billys, you have many options for days at the seaside. Watch the kids swim in the sheltered tidal pool at Portreath beach (15 minutes’ drive), or learn to windsurf at Gwithian (20 minutes), backed by dunes and rockpools. You may spot grey seals at Godrevy beach (20 minutes), and other local options include the surfing beaches at Perranporth (25 minutes) and lively Newquay (half an hour). Anyone with even a passing interest in Cornwall’s mining heritage should consider having a nose around the King Edward Mine Museum (10 minutes’ walk), with its working mining equipment, while the circular Great Flat Lode Trail is accessible direct from the campsite and passes South Wheal Frances and Dolcoath Mine (both five minutes) as it follows an old mining tramway. Fans of modern art can get onto the A30 (five minutes’ drive) and head for St Ives (30 minutes) for the treasures in Tate St Ives and the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden – there are loads of indie galleries to check out in the town too, as well as seafront walks and cosy pubs.
