General

  • Riverside camping near Bude
  • Woodland and wildlife walks, hammocks and free wifi and firepit use
  • Newly refurbished and heated shower block; disabled shower and loo

‘Campfires are allowed by the riverside,’ say the owners of Woodview Campsite near Bude in Cornwall, which is symbolic of such splendid pitching we’ll have to say it again. Campfires allowed. By a riverside. In Cornwall. Oh, and the firepits are free to use, and by the river there are also hammocks. And swings. Yes we certainly wood.

Woodview Campsite is in north Cornwall on the Cornwall/Devon border (nifty for both Dartmoor and Exmoor National Park; we also wood) and six or seven miles from Sandymouth, Crooklets and the other beaches at Bude.

We’ll get to all the many many activities and things to see in the Local attractions section, but if you’re all of a flutter trying to decide what to do, just have a word with the Woodview team, a local family who knows the ins and outs and the upside downs of all to see and do in Cornwall. And there’s free wifi on site if you want to have a look at the Local attractions again or nearby walking routes, likely bike rides or pubs.

On site, all is topping: Woodview is an elevated position and sheltered by trees (clue in the name there), with pitches coming in hardstanding or grass with a choice of electric hook-up. Wander south for the stream on the edge of the campsite that flows into the River Tamar, or branch out into the beech woodland a short stroll away for wildlife walks among the wildflowers.

Facilities – all free – include a games room with table tennis, air hockey, Freeview TV, indoor football and snooker, and a newly refurbished shower and loo block with underfloor heating, baby changing and a disabled shower and loo. Laundry facilities are also available.

If you’re not using one of the seven riverside firepits, barbecues can be used (sensibly please) in the main pitching area, with a side helping of views towards Bodmin Moor and Dartmoor. We wood.

Peaceful, rural setting and lovely family showers.

    Disliked:

No phone or wifi signal. Very difficult to navigate the extremely narrow roads. Quite remote.

From the manager...

Glad you enjoyed the peace and quiet of our campsite, the telephone signal obviously varies according to which company you use here in Cornwall, we are on Vodaphone which does give 4g here. The internet is available, sometimes has to be turned off and on if too many users to free it up. We only have to be asked for this to be checked. We are a quiet site with camp fire pits by the river and a games room with many activities for adults and children, only 5 miles some from the nicest beaches in Cornwall and many activities close by.
All the best,
Michael.

Everything about the site, stayed from Friday to Sunday in a cabin. The site is in a great location, quiet and the owners are very friendly and helpful.

The cabin was basic but was just what we wanted....great bar b q provided. Lovely seat and bench to seat on. The site facilities were excellent....the hammocks and fire pits were great , swings were good fun. The most impressive thing and my children loved it (four & seven ,boy and girl), its a farm storage barn (sort of) converted into an indoor play room....we all loved it....you could play badminton, basketball, pool, air hockey, indoor hockey etc ...big tv and comfy settees to sit on.....great set up.

The shower rooms and fridges and washing up areas were very good.

All in a well laid out and thought out campsite...be going back for certain later in the year

    We all loved it.

The site was very clean and organised. The site was some way from bude however that was clear for the description and reviews therefore we were fine with this. The bathrooms were superb. Clean, warm and modern. Private family showers that were kept in fantastic condition. The fire pits and hammocks were absolutely brilliant and made this site really special.

    Disliked:

Although the site is in the countryside we didn't find any walking paths or cycle routes nearby, therefore a car is needed. This is not a complaint, just something to be aware of.

Pretty much everything. This is the first different campsite i`ve stayed on as a bit to far from my favorite Northern beaches for years. I wasn't quite to begin with, it`s a long drive off the main road but that adds to the `out of the way` element, which is the whole point. Easy to find and accessible. Had to call for reception, which was nearly an issue as no signal but thats not their fault, thats A**le! The lady showed me where to park and i was able to move, it was fairly quiet so lucky i guess but i didnt feel like i got a lot of info on facilities and logs etc but i`m a grown up and i`ve a tongue so not a worry.
Not sure if i liked the concrete hard standing as used to grass but it`s cool and it`s so peaceful, seriously slept brilliantly and nice to wake up with the birds.
The fire area and hammocks are brilliant and sat and enjoyed a nice meal albeit cooked on my own BBQ (seems a waste setting a fire on my own) and a glass of wine then a read/snooze in the hammock.
The shower facilities are second to none, in fact better and bigger than my own. spotless, roomy especially for a family and good hot water. A hairdryer as well, which is a great extra.
I don't use wifi whilst camping so turned it off so can`t comment but it was always there when looked (put your tech away, it`s the outdoors)
Overall a almost perfect couple of nites, wish it could of been longer.
    Thank you

    Disliked:

*A bit less hasty introduction to the site, as some first time campers would want info on facilities and the logs and fire etc. It`s a small personal touch but sometimes there the big things.

Lovely site far away from traffic noises. We loved electricity hook up point together with drinking water just few meters from each pitch.
Charming fire places next to stream but you have to buy the wood for it.
Very supportive and friendly staff. We were the first time campers and they helped with many things including dryer at 10 o'clock in the night and letting us to choose the pitch we liked.
Nice, clean family showers and toilets.
Has a fridge and freezer for your use.

    Disliked:

Only reason we don't give 5 stars is a slope. Tent pitches are on a slope. Nearly all of them. But then again all Cornwall is on a slope.
Sleeping on a slope is an annoying thing. We had airbeds and at the first night kids kept rolling down like barrels. Next night we turned our beds across and they slipped down into their sleeping bags like silkworms suffocating and panting. Only at third night we managed to get some decent amount of sleep as we leveled our beds with all of spare clothing we had. Same happend with a table. Eventually we realised we can level it out with some books. So my advice- take with you something to level out beds and you will have a nice place to stay.
There is a washer and dryer on site, very useful but it's for additional cost. 10 min per 1£. One 30min wash and 40min drying cost me 7£. Cost for itself is understandable but there are berly any instructions how to use appliances and how much it would cost. It took me nearly an hour to figure out the rules of pay meters. Bigger signs, guys! Bigger signs for amateurs and beginners, please.
There is an additional toilet down the hill next to fire pits. It's handy for those who stay on lower pitches but it was full of spiders (I counted 26). I personally could not care less but my 8 years old daughter run out screaming. Country side charm for free :)
Family showers are an amazing idea but could do with a curtains for some privacy. Not every teenager wants to share their good looks with siblings but still wants to use the best showers on site.
The site is near to cattle farm. 2 days out of 3 it smelled of farm. Then again half of Cornwall is next to some farm.
WiFi is very weak. If it works (for 2days it didn't) it will be enough for opening a news page nothing more. Normally I would say "who cares, we are on holidays" but we didn't have any phone reception on site what so ever and our daughter did need a doctor so we had to drive few miles away from camp site to get an Internet reception and find nearest farmacy.

From the manager...

Thank you for your comments, I hope you enjoyed camping enough to try it again.
The toilet at the bottom of the campsite is cleaned regularly but the spiders love it and find thier way in at night !
The fire pits and hammocks are very popular .
All the facilities in the games room are provided free- badminton, table tennis ,pool tables, air hockey, indoor football, basket ball, connect 4 etc.
All the hot water , hair driers are also free to use.
The family showers are really meant for families with young children and we felt curtains would restrict the space. There are single shower cubicles for older children/ adults.
We are usually onsite and are happy to help with any queries, but there are instructions with the washing machine advising how to get the cheapest wash.
We have done our best with the wifi, are you say we are in a rural situation-BT promise cable within a year.

Directions

Coming from Bude:
We are just off the A39 between Bude and Bideford. Follow the A39 to Bideford and after going through Kikhampton for a mile on the Bideford side, turn right for Bradworthy then left at the T-junction. You should see Woodview Campsite signs. Follow these until you come to a crossway in the woods. There is another sign here for Woodview Campsite - turn left and we are after 100m on the right.

Coming from Bideford:
Follow the A39 to Bude for 10 miles. Just after the Cornwall/Devon border sign, take the first left turning by a bungalow on the road edge. Keep straight on, following Woodview Campsite signs for 2.5 miles. If you miss this turning take the next left off the A39.

Local attractions

Within 20 minutes of Woodview Campsite, holidaymakers of all flavours will find beaut beaches, old seaside villages, family days out, coastal walks, sporty days and King Arthur legends at nearby Tintagel.

On days when not cooking over a campsite firepit or barbecue – because even with riverside firepits available one should sample quite a bit of Cornwall and Devon produce – pubs serving food and many tiptop restaurants are close by in the area of Bude, Hartland and Bideford (hang around in summer for carnivals and family events).

Bude’s three beaches, Sandymouth, Summerleaze and Crooklets, are popular with families and those dipping into watersports; surf schools and surf gear hire shops are aplenty on this part of coast.

Tamar Lake is also nearby to try sailing, fishing and canoeing, and the Bude Tourist Information & Canal Visitor Centre has info on navigating Bude Canal by kayak or rowing boat.

On land, Bude is on the National Cycle Network NCN3 linking to the Camel Trail; both have gentle rides suitable for families. The South West Coast Path can be picked up at Bude tourist information centre and covers superbly scenic walks from Bude to Boscastle, Marsland Mouth and Crackington Haven.

Also within 20 minutes, land fans have tenpin bowling and six levels of play at Harlequinns Leisure, and to rock climbing, tennis, squash, horse riding and golf: ask the Woodview team for their recommendations.

To the south, Tintagel and its castle are among the most visited places in Britain: stop at Boscastle on the way for one of our fave UK museums the Museum of Witchcraft, and carry on down the coast to Newquay for Newquay Zoo or a day at the Crealy Great Adventure Park in Wadebridge.

Cobbled Clovelly is to the north: clop around here for the day to see the town’s renowned steep street and have an astronomical day out at The Milky Way Adventure Park.

Bodmin Moor, Exmoor and Dartmoor are all within an hour’s drive, and an abundance of other family days out are easy to get to from Woodview, such as the Eden Project at St Austell, Launceston’s Tamar Otter Sanctuary and Trethorne Leisure Park, and famed The Big Sheep at Abbotsham.
