  • Eco-friendly coastal site set over 220 acres of countryside
  • Widemouth Bay and Bude both within 15 minutes' drive
  • Surf hire and lessons for groups and individuals of all abilities
How about rocking up to a colony of beach boys and girls on Cornwall's north coast? If interested, check out Sandymouth Surf Town, a chilled-out seaside site where the surf's (almost always) up. This niftily-located site is a few minutes' walk from Sandymouth Bay beach – a long, sandy strand with rockpools, caves and superbly surfable waves. Sandymouth Surf Town caters to both newbie boarders who need to hire their kit and take lessons and experts who can carve up the breakers like pros. Once you've mastered (or reacquainted yourself with) the basic techniques close to base, other surfing hotspots like Widemouth Bay (15 minutes' drive) and Crackington Haven (half an hour) are close by. The site is a fab setting for relaxing in between bouts of beach time: both woodland and meadow-style pitches are available here, all of them coming with access to firepits for fireside chill-outs after dark. Sandymouth Surf Town is big on keeping nature in good nick – recycling as much waste as poss, volunteer-run beach clean-ups and a bee-friendly wildflower meadow are just some of the ways the site staff strive to keep the planet happy. An on-site shop selling holiday essentials plus local produce (including site-harvested honey) is on hand to sustain you throughout your stay (there's a tea room 20 minutes away on foot for those with a sweet tooth too).

Local attractions

The inhabitants of Bude (10 minutes' drive) could pretty much write the book on beaches – Summerleaze, Crooklets and Breakwater beaches are all within a few minutes' walk of the town centre, where there's also a seawater lido for good measure. Walkers with itchy feet stand little chance of getting bored around these parts: the South West Coast Path is a few minutes' walk away from site. Heading north, highlights include Hawker's Hut (25 minutes) and Cornakey Cliff (25 minutes), while those wending their way down to the tail end of Cornwall have the gorgeous Pentargon Waterfall (30 minutes) to look forward to. For similarly scenic inland explores, you could also take yourself down to Devon for otter-spotting jaunts on the Tarka Trail (an hour). Also over in Devon is Bideford (45 minutes), a mid-sized town with family-friendly attractions like the Big Sheep theme park and a heritage railway that should keep the tots content. You can indulge in seaward sallies here as well and board the ferry to visit windswept Lundy Island.
