  • Cosy Cornwall pods by the River Bedalder, on the edge of Bodmin Moor
  • Carnglaze Caverns 10 minutes’ drive; Fowey 35 minutes
  • Shared facilities including field kitchen with covered dining area
Flirting with the idea of wild camping but not ready to commit to it yet? Maybe instead of going ‘wild’ you ought to go ‘wild-ish’… at Wildish Cornwall. On the outskirts of the Cornish village of Warleggan, on the southern reaches of Bodmin Moor, this family-friendly site is all about wild camping – but not as you thought it might be. Instead, you get cosy accommodation in modern pods, each with two comfortable double beds that you can dress with your own bed linen (although bedding packs are available for hire). There’s no mains electricity on site, but solar power provides lighting and USB charging points in the pods. They share an off-grid, spring-fed shower and composting toilet, and in a neighbouring field there are flushing loos in a recycled shipping container, also equipped with a washing machine, freezer, drinking water and lending library as well as communal sockets (all the little extras that add to the ‘wild-ish’ vibe of the place). You’re welcome to start a campfire and rustle up a feast, but you can also create meals in the field kitchen, where there’s a gas burner, barbecue and cool box, plus all the utensils you might need. Then you can devour the fruits of your labours in the canvas-covered dining area with off-grid LED lighting. The River Bedalder runs past the site and is a popular spot on hot summer days; alternatively, head to the Cornish coast, reachable within about 40 minutes’ drive (less if you head south, to places like Polperro). The nearest pub is in St Neot (five minutes) and the closest shops are in Bodmin (20 minutes).

Local attractions

A legacy of Cornwall’s slate-mining industry, Carnglaze Caverns (10 minutes’ drive) have passages and steps carved into the rock leading to an underground lake with remarkably clear waters. Keep an eye on the site’s event calendar, because a musical concert in these surroundings is a pretty unforgettable experience. For the archaeologist in your party, there are multiple Neolithic stone circles on Bodmin Moor – including the ones at Trippet (15 minutes), Hurlers (25 minutes) and Stannon (half an hour) – plus unusual rock formations like The Cheesewring (25 minutes). On the estuary of the river of the same name, the village of Fowey (35 minutes) has pretty narrow streets lined with stone cottages. Take a dip at Readymoney Cove, a sandy beach sheltered by tall cliffs covered in vegetation, or check out the ruins of St Catherine’s Castle, a coastal fortress built by Henry VIII in the 1530s.
