  • Peaceful, adults-only farm site on the outskirts of Marden in Kent
  • Leeds Castle 20 minutes’ drive; Royal Tunbridge Wells half an hour
  • Well-designed wooden pods with gardens; pubs five minutes’ drive
If you’re looking for a slice of luxury along with a peaceful spot to lay your head in Kent countryside, the nattily decked-out pods at Rustic Retreats should be on your radar. Tucked into a quiet corner of a family-run farm just outside the village of Marden, they’re designed for adults only and are surrounded by fields where you can watch horses grazing. Each smartly designed pod is suitable for up to two adults and has a kingsize bed (linens supplied), an ensuite with hot shower and a well-laid out kitchen corner with a Belfast sink and all the essentials. There’s a comfy sofa and dining area too. Moving outside, you have a private deck, outdoor seating and countryside views as well as parking a short walk away. Friendly dogs and cats live on the farm and will most likely come by to say hello during your stay. For this reason, no pets are allowed in the pods. There are a couple of essentials stores and pubs in Marden (five minutes’ drive) as well as takeaways.

Local attractions

Feeling cultural? Time to head for Sissinghurst Castle Garden (20 minutes’ drive), where you can wander the formal gardens, explore the estate and put your feet up in the café; you can easily spend a day at Leeds Castle (also 20 minutes), with its tours of opulent interiors and falconry displays. Also worth visiting is Ightham Mote (35 minutes), a moated medieval manor house with a Tudor facade and gorgeous gardens. Lively towns include Royal Tunbridge Wells (half an hour), where you can take the therapeutic waters and browse The Pantiles for open-air cafés and indie shops. Stroll alongside the River Medway in Tonbridge (25 minutes) and discover the 13th-century castle, or head to pretty Tenterden (half an hour) for the bookshops and restaurants along its tree-lined high street. If you fancy some fresh air, Bedgebury National Pinetum and Forest (20 minutes) has lots of walking and cycling paths, and you can hire boats for a jaunt out onto Bewl Water (25 minutes). Combine your stroll with a tasting session at Chapel Down Vineyard (35 minutes), where quality sparkling wines are produced.
