  • Quiet family-run simple farm site on the Isle of Sheppey
  • Beaches, aviation museum and farm park all 10 minutes' drive
  • Spacious pitches with kids, dogs and groups welcome
Families, couples, groups, solo walkers, dog owners… all are welcome at Barnland Retreat, part of a family-run farm in a quiet rural Kent spot over on the east of the Isle of Sheppey. This is a quiet countryside spot with lovely views all around and plenty of nature areas and scenic local footpaths to explore (particularly good news for those of you bringing your dog along for a break). It’s a family-friendly site too, within easy reach of several kid-pleasing days out including trips to the beach or animal encounters at Curly’s Farm (both about 10 minutes’ drive away). Back on the mainland, Kent is packed with other options, from castles and historic cities to beaches, watersports and zoos. Back on site it’s a fairly simple setup, but with various essentials including toilets, a washing-up area, a chemical disposal point and a shared fridge to keep your drinks cool. Pitches are nicely sized, with plenty of space for your barbecue, awning, gazebo and the like. A pub five minutes’ walk away is a handy place to get a drink and meal (weekends only); there are more places to eat and drink, plus shops, in Minster on Sea and Leysdown-on-Sea, both 15 minutes’ drive away.

Local attractions

Being on an island there are of course beaches nearby – try Leysdown beach (10 minutes’ drive) and Minster Leas (15 minutes) for lively family beaches, or Leysdown Coastal Country Park (10 minutes) and Shellness (20 minutes) for more natural seaside areas. While you’re on the island you may also like to check out the ancient tombs in Minster Abbey (10 minutes), see the planes at Eastchurch Aviation Museum (10 minutes) or try out golf and watersports at Barton’s Point Coastal Park (15 minutes). Curly’s Farm (10 minutes) is a popular destination for younger kids, with pigs, goats and owls among the animals you can see – it’s worth knowing that it’s only open in the school holidays and needs to be booked ahead. To see wilder animals, plan a trip to Port Lympne Safari Park, Wingham Wildlife Park or Howletts Wild Animal Park (all just under an hour away). For a dip into local history, head to Leeds Castle (35 minutes), which has heaps of attractions and activities, or spend the day in Canterbury (45 minutes). There’s more beach time in Whitstable (45 minutes) and plenty of walks in the Kent Downs National Landscape (around half an hour).
