  • Family-run and friendly site within a mile of Lydd
  • Fishing lakes and nature trails on site; watersports next door
  • Showers and toilets, washing-up hut, shop and playground
What do you reckon about pitching up at an amiable and family-friendly place with fishing on site – and a watersports centre right next door? Land a stay at Romney Marsh's Herons Park, a family-run and friendly site welcoming guests (and dogs) for Kent-based stays. Juniors are most welcome too – and if your small sort isn't enamoured with fishing or watersports, you'll likely catch their interest with a mention of the go-karting circuit also next door; the beach at Camber Sands within five miles or the critters of Port Lympne Wild Animal Park within ten or so miles… The Herons Park team can supply info on bike hire and local hikes too. The park has fairly level, marked out grass pitches, a toilet and shower block, a chemical waste point and waste disposal bins within the camping field, and a small shop stocking camping staples such as ice creams, sweets, toys and refreshments. Hired firepits with kindling and logs are on site for guests' use, so speak to the site team after booking to reserve yours. Barbecues are allowed on all pitches, and there's a kids' playground to keep the little ones entertained. If you're here for the angling, you can add a fishing pass to your stay as an extra. (You'll need a current fishing licence if you want to fish two rods; pick one up at the post office.) The town of Lydd and the nearest offsite shop are within a mile.

What customers say

This is a well-maintained campsite with clean facilities and a very friendly, helpful team. Pitches are spacious and level, and the site offers a convenient on-site shop. It’s a great base for exploring the local area, with dog walks and attractions nearby. Some guests noted noise from neighbouring go-karting and event venues, and a limited number of toilet and shower facilities could lead to queues during busy periods.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Easily accessible location, very welcoming team. It was busy but people adhered to the quiet hours in the evening (from 11pm), a little less so in the morning (from 8am) but that’s likely as it’s the school holidays and there were lots of children, this can’t be helped! Good little shop on site, facilities regularly cleaned. Site was very clean, no issues at all.

Liked We really enjoyed our time here, loads to see and do in the area.
The site staff were very friendly and helpful in booking three pitches together for us, and helped with some first aid bandaging my granddaughters finger when she had an accident.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Lovely site, facilities were clean and tidy. Staff were lovely. Use of fridge handy. Some good dog walks as well - great during the day!

Disliked Noise - it was so loud! We fully understand campsite noise, and such however, this really let a lovely campsite down.

Although on the website it says go karts are there on event days - the karts were going all weekend from before 0800 until the evening.

Additionally, the level of noise from the wedding they held, until late with the guests then leaving - not quietly - I might add.

On our final night; big Lorrie’s turned up as they were filming into the early hours and then leaving in the early hours.

The facilities were clean, the toilets were good - however they were being cleaned for nearly 2 hours. Whilst I appreciate cleaning takes time, there’s no other facilities to use..

From the manager: Thank you for the positive comments about the site. Sorry we did not meet your expectations. I would like to address a couple of points. We are surrounded by a couple of businesses that are independent from us. We do mention both on our website to make guests aware so people can make their own judgement on weather our site is suitable for them or not. A majority of our guests do not have an issue with either. Iv'e never know the Karts to start so early so not sure why that was the case this weekend. In reference to the filming, it was a small production and there were no lorries, only a couple of vans which are smaller than a motorhome and I had asked them to leave quietly and be respectful. We didn't have any other complaints about these. Cleaning does take a while at times and we want to keep our facilities clean for our guests, when the wardens are cleaning they do not shut the toilets and showers down, only the ones they are cleaning at the time so an alternative would be available such as the family room or disabled. Thank you for your comments though, where we can we will make changes.

Nice staff, v. clean, near Dungeness, not great for a peaceful break.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Super friendly staff. Useful shop. I think the closest you can camp to Dungeness so is great for visiting. Interesting area to walk/run/explore around the site- managed by Nature England with interesting birds/botany/wildlife. Useful for early morning dog walk. Plenty of dog poo bins. Managed to see the sun come up which was lovely and the site was super peaceful first thing in the morning. Facilities well maintained and very clean.

Disliked There is a venue on site that hosts events and it is next door to a go kart attraction so be aware that this is not a peaceful break style site. There was a private disco/party that was on all night we were there-so ear plugs were essential for sleep or just imagine you are at a festival! In some ways not all bad and did give the site a good atmosphere but may not suit everyone. Pitches are very close together and so privacy meant we didn't open the windows and doors on our tent as we had close neighbours on all four sides. Also queues at the toilet for the women as only two loos and 2 showers (although there was a separate family facility).

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to review and your lovely comments and feedback. The venue stops music at midnight so maybe it was another camper that had music on and was disrespecting the quite hours? They are not licensed to go on all night so definitely cant have been the venue. Hopefully we will see you again though :)

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Location, staff and general tidiness. Handy shop on-site.

Disliked Not many toilet cubicles or showers. Pitches are quite tightly packed in places.
Dungeness power station and power lines are a bit of a blot on the landscape, but not the sites fault. Water sports centre close by and go-kart track.

From the manager: Thanks for your review :) The landscape is very unique to the Romney Marshes. We have to embrace it :)

Local attractions

A go-karting circuit and a watersports centre are right next door to Herons Park, each with a shop and with expert tuition and courses available for visitors. The Port Lympne Wild Animal Park, an award-winning reserve set over 600 acres near Hythe, is also recommended if you're on hol with the offspring, as is the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway steaming along for 13 and a half miles from Hythe to the National Nature Reserve of Dungeness. Lathe Farm at New Romney and the Rare Breeds Farm at Ashford should also be popular picks. For beaches, clamber the dunes or go kite buggying at Camber Sands, the only sand dune system in East Sussex, and tackle more fishing (for mackerel) at Dymchurch, like Camber Sands also a Site of Special Scientific Interest for its insect and plant life. Fish, chips and Kent coast views can all be had at the Dungeness headland. Several bike routes are nearby, including the National Cycle Network 2 running through Lydd on its Romney Marsh route from Hythe to Rye; along the four or so miles of the Royal Military Canal, and circular routes around the marsh from New Romney or Snargate. The cobbled streets and afternoon teas of ancient Rye are about ten miles from the site.
