  • Adults-only glamping on the edge of the Kent Downs National Landscape
  • Leeds Castle 15 minutes’ drive; Canterbury 35 minutes
  • Woodburning stove; private bathroom hut and outdoor covered kitchen
You’ve packed the kids off to the grandparents (or maybe there are no kids in the picture at all), and you’re all set for a peaceful break in the countryside. On the edge of the spectacular Kent Downs National Landscape, within easy driving distance of bluebell woods and chalk hills laced with hiking trails, is Take Time Shepherds Huts. This adults-only site couldn’t be easier to reach, since it’s just off the M20 and within five miles of not one but three train stations: Pluckley, Charing and Lenham. Two off-grid and eco-friendly shepherd’s huts named after the owners’ dogs sit on a family farm, and they are splendidly appointed, with comfortable double beds (and all the bedding, of course, plus towels), a woodburner (logs and firelighters are available at the check-in area), a cool box and plenty of storage. You have your own outdoor covered kitchen, with all the tools you might need to whip up a meal for two, and a seating area (with views over the Downs) in which to enjoy the fruits of your culinary labour. Each accommodation also has its own private facilities (composting toilet, hot-water shower and basin) in a separate hut a few steps away. Sounds like the site owners have thought of everything, right? But wait, there’s more: when you walk into your hut, you’ll be greeted by a welcome hamper with all you need for a hot drink, plus biscuits, marshmallows (and toasting forks) and a power bank charger for your phone.

Local attractions

Take a stroll in the expansive grounds of Leeds Castle (15 minutes’ drive), where you might spot woodpeckers, as well as ducks, swans and peacocks. The castle itself is a moated structure from the 13th century, though it was refurbished in the 1920s, so it combines forbidding medieval features with Art Deco elegance. In Canterbury (35 minutes), the 11th-century cathedral was the site of the murder of archbishop Thomas Becket, which in turn inspired pilgrimages like the one narrated by Chaucer in his ‘Canterbury Tales’. Other attractions in this historic city include the Dane John Gardens, with the Simmons Memorial atop a conical hill. The Kentish coast can be reached in just over half an hour’s drive. Folkestone (35 minutes) has both sandy and pebbly beaches, plus a lively harbour arm lined with food stalls. After a swim at Dover Beach (40 minutes), you can check out Dover Castle, or hike past the ferry port up to the famed White Cliffs.
