Camper at hollands wood

  • Friendly New Forest campsite with simple facilities provided
  • Five minutes' drive from Lyndhurst; 15 minutes from Lymington
  • Access to woodland walking trails; half hour's walk to Brockenhurst
It can be tricky to escape the trappings of modern life these days… but Hollands Wood Caravan and Campsite is a place that allows guests to do just that. With 22 hectares of gorgeous oak woodland as a backdrop, this campsite in the New Forest National Park is a fabulous spot for stepping back and taking some deep breaths of fresh air. Stays here are on simple pitches woven through the treelines, among the ferns or out in slightly more open spots – take your pick depending on which one catches your eye. Whichever you pick, you should be treated to soothing views of green space, sounds of woodland and the chance to spot the New Forest’s famed wild ponies wandering freely. (Please note the natural terrain means that rock pegs are a good idea for successful tent pitching.) The friendly atmosphere at Hollands Wood lends itself well to many hours of chilling out in the woods – but the location’s also an excellent one for those who’d like to take off and explore more widely. From here you’ll have access to 143 miles of waymarked trails for walks or bike rides through the surrounding woodlands, or you could walk to Brockenhurst (home of several lovely places to eat and drink) in about half an hour. This is a place where guests are encouraged to embrace the natural setting in all its glory, but there are a few facilities provided to make life a little more comfortable – these include toilets, showers, a washing-up area and a launderette. You’ll also be asked to follow the New Forest Code to help maintain this glorious environment, and use organic toilet fluid where possible in chemical loos.

What customers say

This New Forest campsite offers a beautiful woodland setting with plenty of space and the opportunity to choose your own pitch. Visitors praise the clean facilities, friendly and helpful staff, and the chance to see ponies and other wildlife roaming freely. The location is ideal for walking and cycling, with easy access to Brockenhurst. Some minor issues noted include road noise, occasional overcrowding during peak times, and dated showers. Despite these points, most guests highly recommend the site and plan to return.

Liked Woodland, amongst Oak trees and can choose whatever pitch you like.

Nice woodland walks right from the site.

Plenty of space for our toddler to play on his trike.

Disliked Very noisy group of young men until 01:30 in morning.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Location great - easy access to forest direct from site, facilities good and lovely local area.

Disliked Grumpy jobsworth rule enforcer running the place, no washing lines (not even strung between tent and car), no bikes leaning on trees, etc - the list goes on. Pitch included pup tent but was told I couldn't use it cos they are for kids only, couldn't pay for another pitch even though there was loads of space next to our van (cos they need to be 6m apart) and there no designated pitches. Was told I could use it as a storage tent next to the van, but nobody could sleep in it. Daft. Site would also be a mudbath in wet weather, fortunately we've had a long dry spell.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Location, customer service, cleanliness

Disliked Not disliked, but could do with more charging towers for those with battered old cars that rely on sat nav on the phone 😂

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked This is a beautiful site in the midst of the New Forest and you are literally surrounded by nature. The ponies amble past in the early morning and cows came by in the evening. It’s great to be able to choose your own pitch but despite the informality everything was very well run. Showers and toilets clean and plentiful for the large site. Great for cycling and walking or just sitting around under the trees.
We would return.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked I’ve always loved Hollands Wood. I’ve been coming here for over 30 years, and it’s still my favourite campsite. Great location (right by Brockenhurst and by a river for my children to play in), great facilities, loads of space (even when fully booked, it wasn’t a squeeze!), and very friendly staff. The new coffee/ice cream shop is a great addition!

Disliked The ground can be a bit tough to break through with normal pegs (worth buying rock breakers). Obviously this isn’t the fault of the campsite, and certainly wouldn’t put me off returning.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked The clear entrance and friendliness of staff

The experience of camping in woods with ponies walking through

Toilets and showers were immaculate considering the foot traffic

Disliked The neighbour playing his football commentary loudly from his car took away some of the tranquility of the peace

But that’s people for you as the campsite was wonderful

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked It was a lovely country feel with clean and practical services, staff are really friendly and engaging. It was fantastic to be able to camp between the trees with the horses and cattle roaming free. Just be aware make sure you put your food away as there is one naughty horse that loved nothing more than try to nick my doughnuts.

Disliked The only thing that put a dent on our stay that there were a few people that didn’t understand or respect the curfew time of 10 pm.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Friendly staff and well organised and a very nice tranquil setting. I wasn't sure what to expect but it was very pleasant experience. Facilities were over all good and pitches were flat and lots of variety.

Disliked other campers hogged the lockers for device charging so either more needed or needs policing. I managed but only just

Local attractions

Nearby Brockenhurst (half an hour’s walk/five minutes’ drive) is a good place to stroll to – the village has some lovely pubs, a bike hire facility for woodland cycle trails and the perennially popular Balmerlawn picnic spot for a riverside snack. Lyndhurst (five minutes’ drive) is another nice village to visit, with the New Forest Heritage Centre and bike tours available. Spotting animals is surely part of any New Forest break, and that’s guaranteed with trips to places like the New Forest Reptile Centre (10 minutes), Longdown Activity Farm (15 minutes) and New Forest Wildlife Park (15 minutes). The natural world is a huge draw around here – but so are the shiny cars of the National Motor Museum, Beaulieu (15 minutes). Once you’ve finished there, head back to the site via Lymington (15 minutes), which has boat trips, boat hire and the chance to cool off in a seawater swimming pool.
