Electric hardstanding and grass pitch (lake view)

Liked: We loved staying at Brightlingsea. Easy access on & off site. Pitch sizes are ok.Showers/toilets are adequate but what makes this site special is the lake, the promenade and the walks. The local pubs, butchers, bakers, cafe are independents and the local co-op store, park, lido, children’s safe sandy beach area are all within a five minute stroll. It’s a quiet site during the week and the weekend seemed to be more family orientated but just as chilled. There’s a foot boat you can book online to take you to Mersea Island and a few other places but don’t forget to book your return journey. It’s a boating town and we were lucky to be there for a boating race. Paddle boarders, swimmers were all enjoying the sea. Everyone seems to own a dog in Brightlingsea so you can take them to most places except in a few shops. It’s a friendly area on and off site. We think it’s a little gem of a place. Nicki is the new manager, lovely lady who is very helpful and doesn’t create a drama out of things. We will book directly with her next time we visit.

Disliked: WiFi wasn’t the worse but not the best either.

Electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked: Nice quiet site - well it was until some sort of boating regatta! No, can't fault the site. Didn't use toilets or showers so can't rate them. It's useful to have water on the pitch. It was a bit chaotic on the Friday with lost of new units coming on site - problems caused by people pitching up on the wrong side of their pitch despite clear notices telling you how to pitch.

Electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked: Have visited this site many times. It has a somewhat chequered history but the new owners have done a lot of work and the site is now very clean and tidy. It is a perfect location and there are lots of things to do in the local area. The site is normally quiet and peaceful with lovely views of the lake.

Disliked: Unfortunately the Bin Lorry chose to very noisily empty the bins at 6.15am on a Bank Holiday Monday morning Not the fault of the site of course but annoying when on holiday.

Local attractions

Created in the 1960s, Beth Chatto's Plants & Gardens (15 minutes’ drive) is based on a simple but oft-ignored principle: right plant, right place. One of the highlights here is the Gravel Garden, famously never watered and home to drought-tolerant plants and shrubs. In contrast, the Water Garden spreads around a series of ponds and is dotted with colourful flowers. Reward your offspring for following you patiently around the gardens with a trip to Hasty’s Adventure Farm (20 minutes). In addition to a giant sandpit for younger children, there are oversized Lego constructions, an adventure course and grass slides. Not forgetting resident animals like Pipsqueak the pygmy goat and Mac the alpaca… Built in the 11th century over the ruins of an ancient Roman temple, the Norman Colchester Castle (half an hour) now houses a modern museum displaying items unearthed locally, such as the Fenwick Hoard, a collection of delicate jewellery and coins, and a vase decorated with images of fighting gladiators.
