General

  • Tent campsite on the western edge of historic Hadrian's Wall
  • Forty minutes' drive from the Lake District and 20 from Carlisle
  • Quiet and peaceful site

Located at the western edge of historic Hadrian's Wall, Bowness is the perfect base for exploring the beautiful Solway coast and is only 40 minutes' drive from the Lake District and 20 minutes from Carlisle. The area is rich in wildlife and in particular birds.

We are pleased to welcome holidaymakers to our fully-licensed and equipped tent-only campsite. Walkers and cyclists are most welcome and we can provide secure storage for bicycles and packed lunches if required. We even have our own charging point for electric vehicles. This is a very quiet site with a noise curfew from 10pm until 7am. Sorry - we are unable to allow campfires or barbecues.

Our amenities include a purpose-built shower and toilet facilities with hot water included and heated bathrooms with hairdryer. Electric hook-ups are also available, for a small extra charge per night.

There are washing-up facilities as well as a washing machine (available at an extra charge) with outdoor dryer and an outdoor stand pipe and dog-wash area. Unfortunately we do not accept motorhomes or caravans and chemical toilets are not permitted.

There is also a licensed tearoom on site where our guests can relax in the afternoon after a day exploring the local area. We are happy to welcome pets on site.

There is a car parking area less than 50 metres away from the furthest pitch. Our tent area is 'car free'. Cars are not allowed on the grass at any time. Tents must be pitched a minimum of 5 metres apart (sorry, no gazebos).

Please note that the nearest village shop is four miles away, and the nearest supermarkets, banks, chemist etc are in Wigton, nine miles away.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

Friendly welcome from the owners and a fair price for a night stay. We camped and the camping area was lovely, as well as being very close to the parking area which made life much easier! The amenities available were more than satisfactory, with a cabin offering men and female bathrooms with hot showers as well as a kitchen which provided everything you needed for tea and coffee as well as snacks to take as you please and pay into the honesty box. Lovely idea and worked very well for us! We also had a wander round the corner to the local pub which was very friendly and enjoyed a few drinks there on the Saturday night.

    Disliked:

A little too far from shops and amenities for our liking - however had we not been having a last minute stop over we would have been more prepared,l. The nearest shops/ supermarket / takeout was in wigton which is about a nine mile drive.

We felt very welcomed when we arrived. The customer service we received was very helpful and pleasant. The camp site its self was lovely, very peaceful and suitable for us. The facilities was spot on, 10/10 for cleanliness. Overall I don't think we had any complaints, we extremely enjoyed our stay and would 100% visit again!!!

    Disliked:

We had to travel quite a bit to find activities but it wasn't really that much of an issue. The scenic views on our drive definitely payed up for it!!

Loved the toilet/shower facilities. Only one men's and one ladies but as its only a small site I never found myself in a queue. Ladies shower was blocked with hair on the Sunday morning though so I couldn't take a shower. No problem though it was sorted by the evening.
Site was lovely and quiet, nice and flat. Our tent was still a little wet on Monday (check out 10am) when we were due to leave but Lynn (the owner) was not at all bothered when we were still around at 11:30.

    Disliked:

Not really enough within walking distance with small children. We thought we'd be able to go to the beach but were told by a local that it is quick sand! Was not a problem though we found plenty of places to eat and things to do only 30 mins drive away.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review. We're pleased that you enjoyed our 'micro' site.

The problem with the shower was actually grass in the shower trap from the grass cuttings outside which had trafficked in on campers feet - sorry, but thankfully easily remedied.

We're more than happy for campers to dry equipment out before packing up and have a drying tent for this purpose.

The waterfront in Bowness is a tidal estuary and can be a very hazardous environment so we do not recommend it as a beach. There are some fabulous quiet beaches just south of here in Silloth and Allonby so we hope you found these on your travels in the area.

We hope to see you again in the future.

No BBQs in the camping area, maybe you could provide a small area with a couple of picnic tables and a paved section for bbq's... Then it would 10 out of 10 and we would be back every year!

The site is small and quiet. There facilities were spotlessly clean, including a kitchen area with a kettle, microwave and washing machine. The showers are included in the fee. The owner and staff were nice and friendly.

    Disliked:

It was never an issue while I was there but the car parking area was small.

From the manager...

Thank you for your positive review. We're pleased that you enjoyed our site. Regarding the car park, a lot of our guests arrive on foot as we are at the end of the Hadrian's Wall National Trail, so we rarely have problems. We do have overflow car parking available at the guest house as required.
We hope to see you again in the future.

Local attractions

Bowness-on-Solway lies within the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty: it is approximately 12 miles west of Carlisle.

The area is fantastic for walkers and cyclists and is rich in birdlife and wildlife for nature enthusiasts. The RSPB Campfield Marsh Centre is very close to us.

Hadrian's Wall is on our doorstep and has recently been defined as a national trail. Hadrian's Wall Cycleway is a 174-mile cycle journey along National Cycle Route 72 travelling the entire length of the original Hadrian's Wall passing through Bowness-on-Solway.
