Cabins and microlodge at troutbeck head experience freedom glamping

  • Cumbria glamping accommodation at a scenic Lake District park
  • A 10-minute drive to Ullswater; outdoor activity centre next door
  • Comfy units with ensuite bathroom, heating and kitchen facilities
Lake cruises, waterfalls and fells… that’s what’s a-brewing nearby Troutbeck Head Experience Freedom Glamping. In a rather lovely spot for those seeking scenic walks, this smart, family-friendly Cumbria glampsite in the Lake District National Park is about 20 minutes’ drive from Penrith and 10 minutes from the shoreline of Ullswater. The site is in a pretty valley surrounded by classic North Lakeland countryside with easy access to top spots like Ambleside, Grasmere and Windermere. To get the best of the local views, the team on site recommend a walk from Howtown to Glenridding, a lake cruise on Ullswater and a drive over the dramatic Kirkstone Pass to gaze up at the national park’s peaks. Not that you have to stray very far to start soaking up the scenery – on site, there are views towards Blencathra and the Great Mell Fell, and you could go for a little stroll by Trout Beck running alongside one side of the site. Need a bit more activity to keep energetic types happy? Head next door to Rookin House Farm Centre for horse riding, archery, quad biking, clay pigeon shooting and other outdoorsy antics. Whether you’ve picked a relaxing or action-packed day, a comfy stay awaits back on the site, where all accommodation has heating, beds made up, an ensuite bathroom and space to relax outdoors. Kitchen facilities are provided for each one too, so pick up supplies in Penrith or Keswick (15 minutes’ drive). The nearest pub is a couple of miles away if you fancy an evening out.

What customers say

Guests consistently praised the site's cleanliness, quality accommodation, and peaceful location, highlighting its suitability for families. Many enjoyed the friendly staff and well-equipped glamping units. While some noted the lack of WiFi and poor phone signal, others found this beneficial for an 'off-grid' experience. Minor points included some wishing for more on-site entertainment for younger children and limited dining options, though the manager has noted feedback on amenities.

Cabin

Liked Wonderful location. Comfortable cabin for 4 adults, 2 children. The fish and chip van (comes Mondays and Fridays) was a welcome bonus.

Disliked The free WiFi was not good - constantly dropping out. So we tried the paid for, Premium, WiFi option. That was even worse.

Liked Very good location, easy to get to and find. Quiet and clean glamping site, and people treat each other with respect.

Disliked The internet signal was very poor, and the Wi-Fi, which was limited, was also very bad.

Cabin

Liked Troutbeck was a fantastic spot for our week in the Lake District. It was like a wee haven away from the busy-ness of the towns/ villages. The site itself was absolutely Immaculate as well as the facilities. The staff were friendly and helpful. We stayed in one of the cabins and it was stunning, had everything we needed for the week. Would 100% recommend to friends and family and already hoping to come back.

Disliked Only drawback as people have said was WiFi but we quite liked being off grid. Would've been a nice bonus to have been able to use netflix on TV for our toddler for a wee movie night but we made do.

Cabin

Liked We really enjoyed our cabin stay! The kids loved the mezzanine area and we appreciated the little quirky features that added to the charm. It was a great place for a family break and we'd definitely consider staying here again.

Disliked No WiFi was only real slight negative but didn’t bother us

Local attractions

Water-based activities on your wishlist? You’ll be well set at this site, as Ullswater (10 minutes’ drive) is just the spot for a wild swim. There’s a 20-mile walk around the shore, but on the water, a rowing boat, canoe or kayak are some of the ways to get out. There are more streams to splash about on the way to the pretty Aira Force waterfall (10 minutes), too. Historic steamers travel across Windermere, accessed through Ambleside (35 minutes), and watersports are also available here. It’s a little quieter on Grasmere (half an hour) for those of you looking for a peaceful paddle or a swim without the big boats around. If more outdoorsy activities are your next step, there are mountain hikes up Blencathra (15 minutes) or Helvellyn (20 minutes). History next on the agenda instead? Be on the lookout for Castlerigg Stone Circle (15 minutes), the Dalemain Mansion & Historic Gardens (15 minutes) or Keswick (15 minutes) for the pencil museum, the brewery and Derwentwater. To round things off nicely, you could call into the Lakeland Bird of Prey Centre (25 minutes) to see birds from all around the globe.
