  • Peaceful site on a family-run Lake District fell farm
  • Within 25 minutes' drive of the Cumbrian coast and Coniston Water
  • Cumbrian heavy horses on site for a scenic farm ride or fell hack
Over in the southwestern corner of the Lake District National Park, there are lots of ways to explore the scenery. Hiking and mountain biking are popular picks, of course, but for guests at Baystone Bank Farm Campsite, there’s another option in the form of a horse riding centre on site. And this isn’t just any old horse riding centre – this is the world’s only BHS-approved heavy horse riding centre, where guests can sign up to ride splendid shire horses such as Clydesdales, Suffolk Punches and Ardennes. There’s something for all abilities here, from short, scenic farm rides for kids to longer fell hacks along the area’s bridle paths for more experienced riders. Of course, you don’t have to be a rider to appreciate this corner of the Cumbria countryside. There are plenty of options around for walks too, with footpaths running from the farm up to Black and White Combes, and trails for mountain bikers as well. It doesn’t have to be all action around here, either. There’s plenty of scope to chill out at the site, which is part of a working farm. You’re welcome to take a stroll around to see the sheep and horses meandering or look out for birds and deer in the neighbouring woods. There’s also a stream running alongside the farm; it’s a good place to seek out wildlife, or to have a paddle at the end of your day’s activities. Pitches here have access to toilets, showers and a washing-up area, plus a play area to keep the kids busy. Barbecues and campfires are permitted, with supplies for either at the shops in Millom (10 minutes’ drive).

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked The site is rural on a working farm. Facilities were clean and the warden went out of his way to help. We were there during storm Dave. If you're looking for peace and quiet lovely views and love star gazing this is the site for you.

Disliked Booked through Pitch Up to include electric. When we got to the site we were told electric wasn't included and we would have to pay. This I felt was unfair but it was cold so felt we had no choice.

Streamside non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Beautiful location.
New born lambs for kids to play with.
Good walk to a stone circle

Disliked Terrible organisation. On arrival it took over an hour to get assigned a pitch (that we had booked) it appears they rent out pitches to camper vans that are not suitable if it has rained...

Shop that sold nothing of use (NOT EVEN MILK OR BREAD) because it would have been "competition for the cafe"

Long periods of time where the hot water did not work.

Camping pod (four person)

Liked Stayed in glamping pod with family including a dog. Clean and tidy and well stocked for facilities. Used hot tub which was a worthwhile addition. Tent pitches all looked good with fire pits and well organised site.
Probably 100 times better in the summer as well

No wifi available but phone signal was good

Disliked Everyone arrives at 3pm which can make getting around the site a challenge, particularly with caravan unhooking and the cars blocking the road. However wardens were on hand to hurry people along!

Camping pod (four person)

Liked Lovey views, peaceful but not too far from amenities so great location. Pod comfy and warm with everything needed for a short break. Staff were friendly and nothings too much was too much trouble. We rode with Cumbrian Heavy Horses who were also brilliant. Highly recommend the pods, will definitely return 😊

Local attractions

If you’re exploring on your own two feet, start with climbs of Black Combe and White Combe, both of which can be accessed directly from the farm. Swinside Stone Circle (10 minutes’ drive) is another local spot worth visiting, or you can set off to see some of the Lake District’s top sights – perhaps Coniston Water (25 minutes) or Stanley Ghyll waterfall (half an hour). Need a little more adrenaline in your life? There are miles of excellent mountain bike trails at Grizedale Forest (half an hour) along with a Go Ape adventure course (40 minutes). Path to Adventure activity centre (20 minutes) can also sort you out with things like canyoning and climbing. Keeping it all a little more low-key, you may like to head to Haverigg beach (15 minutes) for a stroll through the sand dunes, take a steam-powered boat cruise from Coniston (half an hour) or be dazzled by the shiny vintage vehicles at the Lakeland Motor Museum (half an hour).
