  • Peaceful back to basics Cumbria site with lovely Lake District views
  • A 10-minute drive to either Kendal or Windermere
  • Tree-lined grass pitch area a mile from the local village pub
Time for a slice of the simple life? Grab a peaceful Lake District pitch at Church Lane Campsite and immerse yourselves in proper scenic countryside with few distractions. This back-to-basics site has life’s essentials in place – in the form of drinking water, toilets and showers – but hasn’t gone overboard with other facilities, so you’ll simply be left to set up your space and soak up the gorgeous views of the surrounding countryside. Pitches here are on grass with trees around the field to provide a bit of shelter and shade – and the views are pretty much green as far as you can see… This setting gives the place a remote atmosphere that’s well suited to adventurous travellers, nature lovers and serenity-seeking couples or families. That said, it’s not actually all that remote – handily, you’ll be able to drive to Kendal in about 10 minutes for cultural attractions, shops and places to eat, and popular Windermere is about the same distance in the other direction. Closer still is a smart rural restaurant and the little village of Crook, a mile away and the home of the local pub – both excellent options for a good feed. There's also a pizza chef who visits the site during the summer (mid-June to the end of August); they're there on Friday and Saturday evenings from 6pm until late to create tasty, fresh and hand-stretched pizzas.

Guests praise the friendly and helpful staff, as well as the clean and hot shower facilities. While described as basic, it provides essential amenities like portaloos and washing-up sinks. From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We're genuinely sorry to hear that noise from other guests affected your stay. We understand how important a peaceful night's sleep is, and we appreciate how frustrating this must have been.
While we're naturally disappointed that this experience resulted in such a low rating, we do appreciate your comments as they help us identify areas where we can improve. We're actively working to make our campsite an even more family and couple-friendly destination by discouraging large groups and reviewing our quiet hours, as well as encouraging all guests to be considerate of those around them.

We would also encourage any guests experiencing issues during their stay to contact us straight away. We're always more than happy to help resolve any concerns as quickly as possible, giving us the opportunity to put things right while you're still with us.

We hope you'll consider visiting us again in the future so we can provide the relaxing camping experience we strive to offer.

Thank you,

The team at Church Lane Campsite

Liked This was our second time visiting and it was still brilliant. They have upgraded and got the pizza now on offer which we had and it was lovely. There is also coffee on weekend mornings which looked great but we didn’t use this time. We will be back many times more. The kids love it. I love the back to basics but still with a shower and good washing up facilities. Really close to windamere too so handy for activities and adventures. All round great.

Local attractions

If you’re here to explore the attractions of the Lake District National Park, there’s surely no better place to start than Windermere (10 minutes’ drive) – it is, after all, England’s largest natural lake. Boat trips and various watersports (including kayaking and paddleboarding) can help you get out on the water, or you can stick to the lakeshore for a walk, a visit to the World of Beatrix Potter Attraction (10 minutes) or adventure activities at Brockhole on Windermere (15 minutes). Other nearby natural attractions include Kentmere (20 minutes) and Rydal Cave (25 minutes); but if you hit a rainy day, maybe you’d prefer to head to Kendal (10 minutes) for its various museums and arts venues, or to Levens Hall (15 minutes), a little way south of the town. Something to keep the kids happy? Try the animal experiences at Lakeland Farm Visitor Centre (15 minutes) or Predator Experience – Wolf Experience UK (25 minutes). Or, if you’d like a bit of peace for a while, lose them in the labyrinth at Lakeland Maze Farm Park (15 minutes).
