  • Peaceful back to basics Cumbria site with lovely Lake District views
  • A 10-minute drive to either Kendal or Windermere
  • Tree-lined grass pitch area a mile from the local village pub
Time for a slice of the simple life? Grab a peaceful Lake District pitch at Church Lane Campsite and immerse yourselves in proper scenic countryside with few distractions. This back-to-basics site has life’s essentials in place – in the form of drinking water, toilets and showers – but hasn’t gone overboard with other facilities, so you’ll simply be left to set up your space and soak up the gorgeous views of the surrounding countryside. Pitches here are on grass with trees around the field to provide a bit of shelter and shade – and the views are pretty much green as far as you can see… This setting gives the place a remote atmosphere that’s well suited to adventurous travellers, nature lovers and serenity-seeking couples or families. That said, it’s not actually all that remote – handily, you’ll be able to drive to Kendal in about 10 minutes for cultural attractions, shops and places to eat, and popular Windermere is about the same distance in the other direction. Closer still is a smart rural restaurant and the little village of Crook, a mile away and the home of the local pub – both excellent options for a good feed. There's also a pizza chef who visits the site during the summer (mid-June to the end of August); they're there on Friday and Saturday evenings from 6pm until late to create tasty, fresh and hand-stretched pizzas.

What customers say

This campsite offers a back-to-basics experience in a peaceful rural setting with lovely views, conveniently located a short drive from Windermere. Visitors consistently praise the friendly and helpful staff, as well as the excellent, hot showers. While facilities are basic, they are generally clean and well-maintained. Some guests noted occasional noise issues and the portaloos could be improved, but many found it great value for money.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked It’s quite a basic camp, but nothing less than was described to be fair no-frills but not a bad place very peaceful, there are showers and cleaning areas although they are more or less outdoors Overall a decent place to come if you’re not expecting too much, not the best area for phone signal if you’re on EE

Local attractions

If you’re here to explore the attractions of the Lake District National Park, there’s surely no better place to start than Windermere (10 minutes’ drive) – it is, after all, England’s largest natural lake. Boat trips and various watersports (including kayaking and paddleboarding) can help you get out on the water, or you can stick to the lakeshore for a walk, a visit to the World of Beatrix Potter Attraction (10 minutes) or adventure activities at Brockhole on Windermere (15 minutes). Other nearby natural attractions include Kentmere (20 minutes) and Rydal Cave (25 minutes); but if you hit a rainy day, maybe you’d prefer to head to Kendal (10 minutes) for its various museums and arts venues, or to Levens Hall (15 minutes), a little way south of the town. Something to keep the kids happy? Try the animal experiences at Lakeland Farm Visitor Centre (15 minutes) or Predator Experience – Wolf Experience UK (25 minutes). Or, if you’d like a bit of peace for a while, lose them in the labyrinth at Lakeland Maze Farm Park (15 minutes).
