  • Peaceful back to basics Cumbria site with lovely Lake District views
  • A 10-minute drive to either Kendal or Windermere
  • Tree-lined grass pitch area a mile from the local village pub
Time for a slice of the simple life? Grab a peaceful Lake District pitch at Church Lane Campsite and immerse yourselves in proper scenic countryside with few distractions. This back-to-basics site has life’s essentials in place – in the form of drinking water, toilets and showers – but hasn’t gone overboard with other facilities, so you’ll simply be left to set up your space and soak up the gorgeous views of the surrounding countryside. Pitches here are on grass with trees around the field to provide a bit of shelter and shade – and the views are pretty much green as far as you can see… This setting gives the place a remote atmosphere that’s well suited to adventurous travellers, nature lovers and serenity-seeking couples or families. That said, it’s not actually all that remote – handily, you’ll be able to drive to Kendal in about 10 minutes for cultural attractions, shops and places to eat, and popular Windermere is about the same distance in the other direction. Closer still is a smart rural restaurant and the little village of Crook, a mile away and the home of the local pub – both excellent options for a good feed. There's also a pizza chef who visits the site during the summer (mid-June to the end of August); they're there on Friday and Saturday evenings from 6pm until late to create tasty, fresh and hand-stretched pizzas.

What customers say

This well-maintained, pop-up campsite offers a peaceful, back-to-basics experience in a beautiful rural location, ideal for exploring the Lake District. Visitors consistently praise the exceptional cleanliness of the facilities, particularly the hot showers, and the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff/owners. While the portaloos are generally clean, some mention occasional smells. Pitching can be challenging on the sloping fields, and finding the site can require careful attention to directions. Despite minor issues, guests highly recommend it for its location, value, and tranquil atmosphere.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked We were extremely happy with this campsite. It was a lovely space, well looked after and recently mowed, and it was about half full, which meant there was more than enough space between each pitch.
The bloke who welcomed us was lovely, and the facilities were well kept too

Liked We liked EVERYTHING!!
The owners Dan and Jack are so genuine and friendly that we would have happily had a beer with them, lol!
Compliments to the showers, the spaciousness, the views, the walk. Everything was fantastic! We will definitely be coming back!

We went to Windermere beforehand to paddle board. We were so incredibly lucky with the weather, parking, launching the paddle boards, which could be quite the challenge sometimes.. And we were able to spend a few hours on the water and have an ice cream while doing so.

Disliked Nothing! We liked it all!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Fantastic Staff, Fantastic Facilities. Blown away by the warm, helpful nature of the two brothers (Staff) we had the pleasure of dealing with on our trip. Exceptionally friendly and helpful in welcoming us and explaining the facilities, but then also going the extra mile of offering us help with travel since we were on foot and one of them driving us to the lake, in the direction of our next destination.

Beautiful campsite, simple and stylish, with the core facilities you need and lovely flower fields for visuals.

Would definitely recommend and would like to return in the future!

Liked Great campsite with great staff. Pick your own spot to set up rather than being allocated one is what I want. Car parked right next to your tent which is convenient for storage. The whole campsite is split in two parts. Big families were on one side and all the couples/singles without kids on the other side. I dont think this was intended, just a happy accident. Friendly staff which are very helpful and great to just talk to :) definetly will be coming back to this one.

Liked Very well set up and managed campsite. The staff were very pleasant and helpful. I didn't use the showers but I am sure they're good as billed! Toilets were clean always. The field has flat a inclined areas which kept the pitches separate which we liked.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Really well operated. Sinks available for washing up and basic portaloos for toilets. Everything is well looked after and regularly maintained. Two showers available. I had a lovely hot shower with plenty of space to dry and dress. Near to Bowness and Kendall. Obviously, there’s no WiFi but that’s one of the pleasures of going off grid. Highly recommended

Local attractions

If you’re here to explore the attractions of the Lake District National Park, there’s surely no better place to start than Windermere (10 minutes’ drive) – it is, after all, England’s largest natural lake. Boat trips and various watersports (including kayaking and paddleboarding) can help you get out on the water, or you can stick to the lakeshore for a walk, a visit to the World of Beatrix Potter Attraction (10 minutes) or adventure activities at Brockhole on Windermere (15 minutes). Other nearby natural attractions include Kentmere (20 minutes) and Rydal Cave (25 minutes); but if you hit a rainy day, maybe you’d prefer to head to Kendal (10 minutes) for its various museums and arts venues, or to Levens Hall (15 minutes), a little way south of the town. Something to keep the kids happy? Try the animal experiences at Lakeland Farm Visitor Centre (15 minutes) or Predator Experience – Wolf Experience UK (25 minutes). Or, if you’d like a bit of peace for a while, lose them in the labyrinth at Lakeland Maze Farm Park (15 minutes).
