Views over low fell gate from the farm camping field

  • Quiet back-to-basics camping on a working farm in Grange-over-Sands
  • A five-minute drive to Cartmel; 20 minutes to Windermere
  • Dog-friendly site with Morecambe Bay views
At a peaceful countryside location with outstanding views over Morecambe Bay, Low Fell Gate Farm Campsite is a back-to-basics spot for those of you who like to get off grid but remain reassuringly close to civilisation. There’s easy access from the M6 at Junction 36, and you’re only a five-minute drive from Grange-over-Sands railway station. You can walk into Grange-over-Sands in 15 minutes, to source bits and bobs for the barbecue, try out the local pubs and then clear your head by walking along the seafront promenade. The pretty medieval village of Cartmel has indie food shops to nose around and a micro-brewery, as well as a handful of restaurants and takeaways. Drive north towards the Lakes and you’re at Windermere in 20 minutes, for all sorts of water-based activities from sailing to paddleboarding and canoeing. Don’t want to get wet? You can also cross the lake on an old-world cruiser, explore cutesy waterfront villages like Bowness and Ambleside, or get up into the hills for some healthy hiking. Back at site, simple facilities include running water for washing up, and portable toilets. This is a working farm, so while your pet pooches are welcome too, please keep them on a lead and under control at all times. It's also a peaceful place, so there's a no-noise rule in place after 11pm.

What customers say

This basic, no-frills campsite offers stunning views over Morecambe Bay and a peaceful, relaxed atmosphere. It's praised for its excellent location, within walking distance to local amenities, and its spacious pitches. While facilities are basic, consisting mainly of portaloos, many reviewers found them clean and well-maintained, especially during quieter periods. Some visitors noted issues with overcrowding and portaloos during busy periods, and a lack of on-site running water. The site is recommended for those seeking a back-to-basics camping experience with incredible scenery.

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked It was rather expensive for the facilities for example a pop up campsite near padstow £22 per night with a little café toilets and showers

Disliked Porta loos

From the manager: Hi, thank you for your review.

Our prices are in line with all pop up campsites in the area, which all have the same facilities as ourselves (seems a little unfair to compare us with a campsite in Padstow). Please note we have toilets to pay for daily, extra for emptying and cleaning them and also bin collections to take into account before we get a penny. Also it clearly states when booking that it is portaloos. I know they are not to everyone’s taste, but I make sure I go several times a day to keep them clean and smelling fresh.

Kind regards,

Hannah

Liked Good views

Disliked Awful toilets. Very noisy campsite.

From the manager: Thanks for your review. I’m sorry you thought the toilets weren’t to your standard. Unfortunately at the moment we can only have portaloos, I try to clean them as much as possible throughout the day to keep them fresh, but at the end of the day they are still portaloos. They will not be everyone’s cup of tea, which I understand. Also I make sure to drive around the site numerous times throughout the evening to keep the noise levels to a minimum. Thanks Hannah

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Stunning views, lovely owner, very nicely cut grass, clean space, toilets pretty impressively clean

Disliked The sheep next door 🙈

Some people in the field during the day driving around playing music although they had gone after a couple of hours, maybe a suggestion of a gate with lock that people get a code for on booking to stop the general passers buy using it for toilet stop.

Local attractions

Golfers can practise their swing on seafront links or a hilltop course (both five minutes’ drive) with Lakes views. Experienced riders might like the chance to hack across the fells on rare-breed Friesian horses (10 minutes), while horse-lovers of the betting kind can catch race meetings at Cartmel Racecourse. There’s plenty of beach walking on offer too, on the wide expanse of Morecambe Bay’s Silverdale Coast (30 minutes) or Blackstone Point (35 minutes), and you’ll come across salt marshes and woodland trails at Roudsea Wood and Mosses National Nature Reserve (15 minutes). For something a bit more vigorous, The Old Man of Coniston (45 minutes) is a challenging mountain hike rewarded with spectacular views across the Lake District. To up the cultural vibe, there are summer theatre evenings and guided tours at Holker Hall and Gardens (10 minutes), and Grasmere (50 minutes) has several Wordsworth-related attractions and 17th-century cottages owned by the National Trust.
