  • Well-maintained CAMC members-only site at Appleby-in-Westmorland
  • Yorkshire Dales and Lake District both about 40 minutes’ drive away
  • Grass pitches with fell views; pub and café within 10 minutes’ drive
Opinions split between the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District? No need to fall out about it, just book in at New Hall Farm Certificated Location (for Caravan and Motorhome Club members only) just outside Appleby-in-Westmorland and you’re slap-bang between the two national parks. This small, tree-sheltered caravan site is around an acre in size and has views over cattle grazing in neighbouring fields to Cumbrian fells on the horizon. The neatly kept grass pitches sit on a working farm, and have easy access to the main A66 trunk road between Yorkshire and Lancashire. Dogs are allowed on site, and you can exercise them on strolls along the River Eden nearby. Please keep them on leads when on the campsite due to the presence of farm animals nearby. A pub and café serving decent food are both within 10 minutes’ drive. If you’d prefer to stick to self catering, stock up on provisions in Appleby-in-Westmorland shops and supermarkets.

Liked Absolutely beautiful farmland and country view.
Beautiful landscaped land.
Sp peaceful and quiet.
Home from home feel on a private farm.
Plenty of space as only allows a small number of vans.
The cows .. so inquisitive and playful. Loved waking up to them peering at us.
Great price for one night with EHU

Disliked Wasn’t given any specific check in instructions and farmer wasn’t there when arrived so we were unsure where to pitch. Was fine though, we just got our chairs out and relaxed but wanted to get set up really. Minimal problem though, wasn’t a big deal!

Liked Great quiet spot, nice grass and mostly level. Able to park up so had view down the valley and across it.

Was shorter visit than planned and weather not kind this morning either but rubbish bins and water available along with EHU.

I spent many an hour on rifle ranges at Warcop so quite nostalgic to hear rifle fire from my van!

I also thought I’d paid on pitch up but received a polite message and duly paid up! Thanks for being kind to an idiot ! 🤪

Disliked Finding it. I did street view recce, even os maps, (never give an officer a map!). Still missed the turning as sign was very small and lots of other signage near it. Spotted it travelling the other way but again too late. What 3 words location or bigger sign may be helpful or the description of just before dual carriageway starts.

Local attractions

Railway buffs can climb aboard the heritage Settle–Carlisle Railway at Appleby-in-Westmorland (five minutes’ drive) to chug through wild fell country. If you’d rather explore the local area on foot, there are riverside walks along the River Eden and Hilton Beck, while cyclists can access the Sustrans Route 71 and pedal up to Rutter Force waterfall (40 minutes by bike). If you’re keen to reduce your handicap, head for Appleby Golf Club (15 minutes’ walk). The atmospheric ruins of the castles at Penrith (25 minutes) and Brough (10 minutes’ drive) both deserve a visit; if you’ve got kids with you who are just not that into history, reward their patience with a trip to Brough Castle Farm (also 10 minutes) for homemade ice cream in scores of flavours. If you want to explore further afield, take a deep dive into the Yorkshire Dales National Park to admire Cautley Spout waterfall (35 minutes) or drive through the spectacular Buttertubs Pass (45 minutes). Alternatively, head west to Ullswater (40 minutes) or Lowther Castle and Gardens (half an hour) in the Lake District.
