Willow Grove Farm

This site does not currently take bookings here on Pitchup.com.

General

  • Wild camping on a small farm in the Calder Valley, West Yorkshire
  • A 20-minute drive to Leeds galleries, and 40 minutes to Harewood House
  • Farm shop and animals on site; close to fishing, walks and museums

The meadow campsite at Willow Grove Farm is a hideaway with a boho vibe on a farm at the southern end of the Calder Valley near Leeds. Overlooking both the Aire and Calder rivers (anglers please take note), this spot is in pole position for upping your cultural intake with visits to historic houses and art galleries across West Yorkshire.

If that’s not quite your thing, you’ve got 105 hectares of farm land to explore. From there, you have direct access to walking and cycling routes, and in around an hour’s drive, you can be yomping up and down dales to your heart’s content.

The site being on a farm rearing pigs and sheep, with roaming sheepdogs (your dog can come too) and hens, it won’t be too long before you’ve made some animal chums. You won’t have to share your new-found pals with too many other guests either, as there are only a few pitches on the wild camping field, as well as a simple shower and loo block.

No need to look very far for provisions either, as farm owners Josh and Luke run a traditional shop selling homemade farmhouse bakes, eggs from their free-range hens and delicious pork from their home-reared pigs. They’re also more than happy to show you around the farm, answer any questions and recommend places for you to visit.

On top of this they intend to increase their pig herd in order to keep up with demand in the shop and keep supplying local products at reasonable prices!

Beautiful setting for a working farm with rows of sunflowers as one drove up the lane to the farmhouse. Free tea coffee, hot chocolate and hot water

    Disliked:

Only one toilet (toilet bowl only) for all camping guests - toilet flush was not working when we visited; no facility to wash at all, not even when you just have finished using the toilet and wanted to wash your hands, etc.....
Installing a simple hand basin would be appreciated by all guest, I am sure.

The location was lovely. Picturesque, plenty of places to walk with the dog, not too far from home and a short drive to Leeds. Owners pretty much left you to it but were there on hand if you had any queries.

    Disliked:

Not exactly dislikes, just things to consider if you're planning on going there. The site has very basic facilities, as in, an outdoor privy attached to the farm house without handwashing facilities but they do provide antibacterial hand gel. Flies are rampant and bitey so some form of protection against them are a must if you find yourself usually a target. There are animals on the farm which come with typical farm aromas so something to be aware of if you're sensitive to certain smells! And beware of other campers. This one is a dislike. The first night was great, all campers there were respectful of others, especially come night time and noise levels but sadly on the last night, the night before we had to get up to pack away and travel, we were disturbed by a group of younger campers. They were originally at another part of the field, far away from us, but decided to move right next to our tent, somewhere close to midnight. They drove to the pitch, which was concerning, as by the sounds of it, they'd been drinking. They then repitched their tents which took about an hour and then proceeded to make noise by chatting, laughing, singing, zipping and unzipping tents and slamming car doors.

    Disliked:

the only facilities here is a single toilet attached to the side of a house. it was dark the toilet seat was broken and it was not clean. we couldn't find a water source but luckily one of our group brought some bottled water. we also drove past the site because it is not very well ladled.

From the manager...

Hey Dale thanks for staying with us. The toilet is attached to the outside of the house on our working farm which was very busy at the weekend as we were busy. We can’t always clean it after every use and expect campers to keep it tidy. There are two sources of fresh clean water on the farm, we couldn’t have pointed this out to you if you wasn’t sure or received information at the time. We’re always on hand to answer any questions or queries. Our phone numbers are also at the porch for you to contact us at anytime.
