General

  • Spectacular rural views from your pitch
  • Relax in peace at an adults-only site
  • Excellent location for walkers just off the Pennine Way

If you know your Brontë, you'll be fairly sure of what to find around Wuthering Heights Inn a mile and a half from Haworth in West Yorkshire: remoteness, wild moors, wild hikes and scenery to write home about. (And if you don't know your Brontë, tsk; but this is the best setting in the world to finally read Wuthering Heights.)

This is remote camping with a wild feel – but with a pub just steps away and easily accessible to Yorkshire market towns like Skipton, Saltaire and Hebden Bridge as well as the cities of Leeds and Bradford. It's just off both the Pennine and Millennium Ways: have a wild hike while reciting the rather impassioned lines of Heathcliff.

The tiny site at Wuthering Heights is hidden from view behind the inn and accessed down a flight of 30 steps; there's no vehicle access so while it's splendidly secluded and peaceful, it isn't suitable for those with mobility issues. Toilets and a shower are available all day, and food is served in the pub every lunchtime and on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.

The site also has a utility room with fridge, washing-up facilities, a radiator with drying rack, a kettle and sockets for phone charging, hairdryers etc. For security reasons this is kept locked, but keys are available for a £10 deposit, refundable on return of the key.

Wuthering Heights is a peaceful place, so the team asks guests to respect fellow guests and local residents by keeping noise to a minimum.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

This is an adults-only site. Children under the age of 18 are not allowed on site.

The camping field is behind the pub and is accessed by foot down a flight of thirty steps. The toilet, shower and washing-up area are at the rear or the pub up the steps.

Beautiful site and fabulous Shepherds Huts 25/06/2018

Shepherds Hut was beautiful and well thought out . Location of pub is great and had a nice meal and breakfast there. Clean shower and toilet. Liked kitchen and fridge area and handy having a hairdryer and tongs to use . Great location to Haworth- 30 minute leisurely stroll. Views to die for . We did get intermittent mobile data in the huts which was a bonus but depended on provider - EE seemed to work better than O2 .Beer garden tables - used to eat breakfast or have early morning coffe on to get some sun and avoid the midges.

    Disliked:

The seating area on Emily was shaded until late afternoon/ evening so not able to sit out for breakfast as it was a tad chilly . The seating at the side of the hut got sun in the afternoon but the little balcony only got it as it was going down-just a detail and didn’t spoil our time but if you want the sun best to book Charlotte I think . WiFi in the pub was a tad slow at times . Seems like midges had decided this weekend was the time to swarm- hadn’t to take cover in the hut and cover up/ spray quite a lot - surprised us for being such a small area / not very tree laden or near water .

This was a wonderful site. Only a mile from Haworth it was in a beautiful location, with views of the Yorkshire landscape surrounding the site. The owners have thought of every little detail and requirement needed when camping; immaculate shower and toilets, a £10 deposit secures access to kichenette which has a fridge, straightners, a hair dryer, phone chargers, a kettle and an additional sink with hot water and washing up liquid etc. We had Sunday lunch in the pub before we left, which was tasty, perfectly cooked and very good value. The pub also sells a good selection of home cooked food. We would highly recommend this site as a quiet, idyllic place with easy access to Haworth, the steam trains (with real ale bar), Skipton and Hebden Bridge. And many beautiful walks, such as to Top Withens and Bronte falls.

    Disliked:

The midges which were ruthless on both evenings - we were bitten all over. I would recommend packing citronella candles, repellent and taking antihistamine cream as we really suffered.

Decent little camping site, all amenities very clean. Upon arrival we started pitching our tent only to be told we had to re-pitch it once it had been erected (which didnt go down too well with me all my girlfriend but hey ho!.

Downsides are that the camping area itself and quite small but lovely views of a valley in front where sheep like to roam (these can keep you up in the night so bring ear plugs and sleeping mask). Camp site back off of a pub which is friendly and perfect for watching the World Cup.

Car's are parked onto the pubs car park which means carrying everything from your car down 20-30 steps to the tent is a bit of a nightmare but never mind.

    Cheap, very nice.

Directions

Stanbury is on the B6142: to approach from the M1 avoiding Bradford take Junction 26 and join the A58 to Hipperholme, at the main crossroad near the church, turn right joining the A629 and follow the signs straight on towards Haworth. At the mini roundabout take the first exit and follow the road through Haworth and out into the countryside. Stanbury is just over a mile from Haworth and the Wuthering Heights is on your right just after entering the village. This is not the shortest route, but is probably the simplest.

To approach from the M65, stay on the motorway until it finishes at Colne. At the roundabout take the first exit joining the A6088, continue straight on the A6088 over a number of roundabouts until reaching Laneshawbridge where you take a right at the Emmott Arms; this winding road over the moors will bring you straight into Stanbury. You will find the Wuthering Heights on your left.

By bus, take line 664 from Keighley.

Local attractions

Scenery-filled hikes on the surrounding moors are minutes away from Wuthering Heights Inn, and within 45 minutes you can be at Top Withens which inspired the Brontë book. (Again, wild hikes while reciting the rather impassioned lines of Heathcliff are recommended.)

Both the Pennine Way and the Millennium Way are close by, and cyclists can follow part of the Tour de France Yorkshire route through Knaresborough, Silsden, Keighley, Haworth, Hebden Bridge and Elland.

Five minutes by car or 20 minutes by foot will take Brontë buffs to their former home at Haworth, now the Brontë Parsonage Museum, and to join the Keighley and Worth Valley steam train (yes, this is the one in The Railway Children) or wander up the town's cobbled main street. Hebden Bridge and its markets are also a short drive away.

At the nearby World Heritage Site of Saltaire, arty sorts should like the Hockney exhibition in Salts Mill and heritage buffs the preserved mill workers' town, once a dry spot (shudder) but now with bars, bistros and shops aplenty.

About 15 miles away, Skipton has access to the Yorkshire Dales and its villages, caves, spectacular scenery and miles more walks: be sure to take your copy of Wuthering Heights here too.
