Wuthering Heights Inn: Shepherd's hut

General

  • Spectacular views at an off-grid site near Haworth in West Yorkshire
  • Five minutes' drive to the Brontë Parsonage Museum
  • No-frills adults-only just off the Pennine Way and Millennium Way

If you know your Brontë, you'll be fairly sure of what to find around Wuthering Heights Inn, a mile and a half from Haworth in West Yorkshire: remoteness, wild moors, wild hikes and scenery to write home about. (And if you don't know your Brontë, tsk; but this is the best setting in the world to read Wuthering Heights at last.)

This is remote camping with a wild feel – but with a pub just steps away and easily accessible to Yorkshire market towns like Skipton, Saltaire and Hebden Bridge as well as the cities of Leeds and Bradford. It's just off both the Pennine and Millennium Ways: have a wild hike while reciting the rather impassioned lines of Heathcliff.

The tiny site at Wuthering Heights is hidden from view behind the inn and accessed down a flight of 30 steps; there's no vehicle access so while it's splendidly secluded and peaceful, it isn't suitable for those with mobility issues. Toilets and a shower are available 24/7, and food is served in the pub every lunchtime except Tuesday and on Thursday to Sunday evenings.

Heads up, this site is completely off grid, and that means no electricity, water or sewerage capability on the camping field. It does have a utility room with fridge, washing-up facilities, a radiator with drying rack, a kettle and sockets for phone charging and hairdryers. For security reasons this is kept locked, but keys are available for a £10 deposit, refundable on their return.

Wuthering Heights is a peaceful place, so the team asks guests to respect fellow guests and local residents by keeping noise to a minimum.

Please note

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Guests under the age of 18 are not allowed on site.

The camping field is behind the pub and is accessed by foot down a flight of thirty steps. The toilet, shower and washing-up area are at the rear or the pub up the steps.

Soiar panel broken so no lights for two evenings.
Radiators not on in shower room.
    Needs painting.

From the manager...

Hi, our shepherds huts do get a regular refresh and Charlotte is due for one later this year - with wet coats, log burners and soggy dogs they do tend to pick up mucky marks uring the year that a wipe down won't shift. As i mentioned when we spoke on the phone; if you had let us know when the lights went out rather than sitting in the dark we could have either fixed the problem or at least provided you with candles and torches for the evening. When they went out again the next time Darren did come down and get them working again. The radiator in the shower room is connected to our main heating system so it runs morning and evening when the temperature is cool.

It was in the description of the site that it is totally off grid but it appears to have been reworded by Pitchup and it doesnt make that clear, we will try and get that altered as we never want our visitors to be unprepared for being off grid.

The views, the location, the hut itself, the staff. Absolutely everything was perfect. They have thought of everything, down to little fairy lights, all the way to a kitchen with milk in glass bottles, to breakfast cereal and bread. Very clean everywhere. There was a problem with the electricity, which was sorted immediately with no trouble at all. Genuinely lovely family who seem to really care.

Comfy bed with nice linen, great shower. Gorgeous location. SO QUIET!
The site is located down well built steps behind the pub, car park and facilities block. The steps have a sturdy handrail and are well lit with sensor-operated lights. The site is very peaceful with lovely views. The outdoor seating was enjoyable, and there is a raised area for camp cooking/BBQ. Unfortunately we didn't get to eat in the pub as they only serve evening meals later in the week.
A helpful idea would be to provide a basket for carrying crockery up and down to the utility room, and an umbrella (luckily it didn't rain.) We will know to pack these next time. A bit more local information would be useful too as there is no WiFi in the huts (and as I didn't use the pub I didn't have the password for their outdoor WiFi).
A good selection of bigger shops in Colne, but Haworth is minutes away and has a Co-Op and Spar, plenty of cafes and takeaways. Highly recommend the Mill Hey fish and chip shop. For the ill-prepared walker, the station in Haworth has a "Railway Children" walk leaflet for 40p (plus a selection of books). The Brontë walks are well signposted.

We loved the open space, privacy and welcoming nature of the pub. It's only a 5 minute drive from Haworth with some amazing works around the moors, bronte falls and top withens. We had the most wonderful time and would recommend it to anyone. There is wifi availble inside the pub not when in the huts or on the camp site.

Directions

Stanbury is on the B6142: to approach from the M1 avoiding Bradford take Junction 26 and join the A58 to Hipperholme, at the main crossroad near the church, turn right joining the A629 and follow the signs straight on towards Haworth. At the mini roundabout take the first exit and follow the road through Haworth and out into the countryside. Stanbury is just over a mile from Haworth and the Wuthering Heights is on your right just after entering the village. This is not the shortest route, but is probably the simplest.

To approach from the M65, stay on the motorway until it finishes at Colne. At the roundabout take the first exit joining the A6088, continue straight on the A6088 over a number of roundabouts until reaching Laneshawbridge where you take a right at the Emmott Arms; this winding road over the moors will bring you straight into Stanbury. You will find the Wuthering Heights on your left.

By bus, take line 664 from Keighley.

Local attractions

Scenery-filled hikes on the surrounding moors are minutes away from Wuthering Heights Inn, and within 45 minutes you can be at Top Withens which inspired the Brontë book. (Again, wild hikes while reciting the rather impassioned lines of Heathcliff are recommended.)

Both the Pennine Way and the Millennium Way are close by, and cyclists can follow part of the Tour de France Yorkshire route through Knaresborough, Silsden, Keighley, Haworth, Hebden Bridge and Elland.

Five minutes by car or 20 minutes by foot will take Brontë buffs to their former home at Haworth, now the Brontë Parsonage Museum, and to join the Keighley and Worth Valley steam train (yes, this is the one in The Railway Children) or wander up the town's cobbled main street. Hebden Bridge and its markets are also a short drive away.

At the nearby World Heritage Site of Saltaire, arty sorts should like the Hockney exhibition in Salts Mill and heritage buffs the preserved mill workers' town, once a dry spot (shudder) but now with bars, bistros and shops aplenty.

About 15 miles away, Skipton has access to the Yorkshire Dales and its villages, caves, spectacular scenery and miles more walks: be sure to take your copy of Wuthering Heights here too.
