Inside the pub

  • Cosy adults-only shepherd's huts with spectacular views
  • Five minutes' drive to the Brontë Parsonage Museum
  • Just off the Pennine Way and Millennium Way
If you know your Brontë, you'll be fairly sure of what to find around Wuthering Heights Inn, a mile and a half from Haworth in West Yorkshire: remoteness, wild moors, wild hikes and scenery to write home about. (And if you don't know your Brontë, tsk; but this is the best setting in the world to read Wuthering Heights at last.) There's a pub just steps away from these tucked-away shepherd's huts. They're also easily accessible for visiting Yorkshire market towns like Skipton, Saltaire and Hebden Bridge as well as the cities of Leeds and Bradford. It's just off both the Pennine and Millennium Ways: have a wild hike while reciting the rather impassioned lines of Heathcliff. The tiny site at Wuthering Heights is hidden from view behind the inn and accessed down a flight of 30 steps; there's no vehicle access so while it's splendidly secluded and peaceful, it isn't suitable for those with mobility issues. Toilets and a shower are available 24/7, and food is served in the pub every lunchtime except Tuesday and on Thursday to Sunday evenings. Heads up, this site is completely off grid, and that means no electricity, water or sewerage capability. It does have a utility room with fridge, washing-up facilities, a radiator with drying rack, a kettle and sockets for phone charging and hairdryers. For security reasons this is kept locked, but keys are available for a £10 deposit, refundable on their return. Wuthering Heights is a peaceful place, so the team asks guests to respect fellow guests and local residents by keeping noise to a minimum.

Charlotte shepherd's hut

Liked The camping and glamping setup at the Wuthering Heights Inn is idyllic. The two huts Emily and Charlotte are cute, cosy and comfortable with spectacular outlooks across the valley. Lambs and sheep gambol about in the fields below and we had a hedgehog snuffling around at night. The small camp kitchen and bathroom/toilet were clean and well equipped. The bread, spreads, milk and breakfast cereal were an unexpected bonus and the little wood heaters in the two huts looked lovely too though we didn’t need to use them.
We loved exploring the local area and stunning attractions by foot. Haworth is an easy 5 minutes by car or 20-30 minutes on foot. The walk to and from Top Withins from the Inn was easy enough to manage within a few hours.
The Inn itself is quaint and lively with locals and visitors.

Disliked Unfortunately we didn’t feel much of a warm and friendly welcome from the hosts.
Upon arrival the staff member in charge was barely interested and we needed to repeat particular requests before they were actioned.
We made sure to book a table for nine people for a 7pm meal the following evening. Three of our party travelled some distance to join us but as we gathered we were informed that the kitchen wasn’t open as the Inn hosting a music event. We had to find a table for nine at an alternative venue at very short notice and then all drive about 10 miles to it. It was very disappointing but the staff showed little remorse.
In fact, none of the staff checked in on us at any stage across the weekend to learn if we were content or otherwise, or to enquire if we needed anything.

Charlotte shepherd's hut

Liked At the Wuthering Heights they give a warm welcome but keep it simple in the comforting Northern way. Perfectly off the radar, the Shepherd’s Hut was complete with wood burner, lovely double bed and the essential kitchen ware you might need. Separate facilities included a shared kitchen, shower and toilets which are all pub adjacent where you can join in with the weekly quiz, borrow a book or get a hot meal. The hut is so thoughtfully put together and very functional while being cosy on an unexpected stormy summers night and delightful on a fresh morning. In bed with a book overlooking the valley was an absolute highlight and the proximity to the moors is almost priceless. Thank you. See you soon.

Charlotte shepherd's hut

Liked We had a lovely 4-night stay in one of the shepherd's huts (Charlotte). The hut had everything we could possibly need (crockery, thermos flask, hot water bottle, as well as a loaf of bread, tea/coffee and some milk) and was really cosy and comfortable. The shower was also amazing. We really enjoyed eating at the pub (which has a great selection of gluten free and vegan options) and especially joining for the pub quiz on Thursday night. The view from the hut is amazing and feels really peaceful. We were very lucky with the weather but there is a log-burner which was all set up in case we had wanted to use it. Great walks nearby and loads to do that is accessible by bus (we were holidaying by public transport). We would highly recommend staying at the Wuthering Heights Inn, and definitely plan to return!

Disliked This didn't affect us but it is worth bearing in mind when booking that the huts are down a couple flights of stairs, and toilets/showers are back up the stairs, so this would be something to consider for anyone with limited mobility.

Local attractions

Scenery-filled hikes on the surrounding moors are minutes away from Wuthering Heights Inn, and within 45 minutes you can be at Top Withens which inspired the Brontë book. (Again, wild hikes while reciting the rather impassioned lines of Heathcliff are recommended.) Both the Pennine Way and the Millennium Way are close by, and cyclists can follow part of the Tour de France Yorkshire route through Knaresborough, Silsden, Keighley, Haworth, Hebden Bridge and Elland. Five minutes by car or 20 minutes by foot will take Brontë buffs to their former home at Haworth, now the Brontë Parsonage Museum, and to join the Keighley and Worth Valley steam train (yes, this is the one in The Railway Children) or wander up the town's cobbled main street. Hebden Bridge and its markets are also a short drive away. At the nearby World Heritage Site of Saltaire, arty sorts should like the Hockney exhibition in Salts Mill and heritage buffs the preserved mill workers' town, once a dry spot (shudder) but now with bars, bistros and shops aplenty. About 15 miles away, Skipton has access to the Yorkshire Dales and its villages, caves, spectacular scenery and miles more walks: be sure to take your copy of Wuthering Heights here too.
