Tent in the woodland
Dogs welcome

  • Woodland campsite over 10 acres on the edge of Oakworth
  • A five-minute drive from Haworth; half an hour from Skipton
  • Tent and hammock camping available; dogs and kids welcome
It’s all about properly immersing yourself in nature at West Yorkshire’s Woodsworth Exploring – this is a place that’s been set up within 10 acres of broadleaved woodland, with options to pitch tents in the grassy glades or set up a hammock to hang out in the woods (bring your own or hire one on site – someone will be around to help you set it up properly). Peace and space are in good supply here: numbers are kept deliberately very low to ensure that traditional back-to-nature vibe is preserved for all. There’s tons of scope for woodland adventures too: kids can seek out dens hidden among the trees, or construct their own (be sure to bring wellies). Cars are parked near the site entrance so it’s pretty safe for children to roam free around the woodlands. The pitches are between 100 and 400 metres away from the car park. With this back to basics setup come a few handy amenities, including wheelbarrows to help you carry your gear over the several minutes' walk to the pitches, a drinking water standpipe and flushing toilets and sinks. Dogs are welcome to join you here, and of course you’re able to light campfires for a bit of evening warmth (a small extra charge applies for this). Filling your days with more rural outings should be easy, as there are lots of walks in the area for both experienced hikers and leisure strollers. You can get straight out from the woods onto a public right of way for the 10-mile round trip to Top Withins or the easier mile-long amble to Oakworth station (the set of the Railway Children film). And is all of this in the middle of nowhere? Not at all – it’s a five-minute walk to Oakworth’s small supermarket, and there are pubs and restaurants within 10 minutes’ walk. Bigger Keighley is 10 minutes’ drive away should you need its amenities.

Liked: On arrival we were met, guided to out parking space and taken through the ethos and how tos of the campsite which was really helpful and made us feel comfortable in our stay. The site is in a lovely woodland woth beautiful views to the surroundings from the nearby footpaths. The pitches are generously spaced out so there is minimum disturbance from any other campers. All round a very easy and unique campsite.

Liked: Everything was great here! I thought the introduction was really helpful and gave a chance to ask any questions and made you feel at ease, as someone who is just starting up camping again and solo camping for the first time this was really nice to have! I enjoyed hearing about the wildlife and what they’re doing to help protect their woodland. The pitches are great and spaced out. I think I had the furthest pitch from the toilet block so it took a few minutes to walk there but I didn’t mind that. The facilities were really clean and it was a good location to get to areas all around there with a bus stop at the bottom of the hill. Everyone was really welcoming and I felt safe there!

Liked: Good facilities - toilets very clean Plots were private and isolated Introduction was friendly and informative Good to see part of an environmental programme to protect woodland Near to some good places to visit

Disliked: Only picky thing is there were no paper towels to dry hands in toilets so we took a towel so not really an issue as toilets were so clean and well presented it wasn’t a problem.

Liked: A close resemblance to the wild camping experience, but with on-site facilities that make it more compatible with taking younger children etc for example. The plots are a decent size and almost far enough away to the others to get the true 'out in nature on your own' feel. The ability to have proper camp fires (on the ground with pre-made stone fire circles) is awesome as a lot of places don't allow this. The woodland is really beautiful and is a testament to the care the owners clearly take of it - some of the rules re not collecting firewood from the ground for example are what is leading this woodland to thrive, in spite it being used regularly by humans. I go wild camping but with some other like-minded adults who know the rules and have the relevant experience etc - I wanted to introduce my son to it but without the risks involved. This was a perfect place to do it. Very well kept, very natural woodland.

Disliked: It was really great, so this is in no way a criticism - the only small down side from what I would personally like, is that the plots weren't just quite far away enough from each other and some of the other people there, clearly weren't there to enjoy only the sounds of nature and the crackle of the camp fire. Some of them were quite noisy and playing their music quite loud etc. One of the owners got one of them to turn it off, only for the plot next to me start playing theirs later, quite loud and drunk and singing along. Not a drama, but not the complete experience of being out in nowhere on your own... to be expected really as it isnt. The logs you buy from them are a tad expensive.

Local attractions

Steam train rides along the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway (20 minutes’ walk) to start the day? A morning of historical sites, like the National Trust’s East Riddlesden Hall (15 minutes’ drive), the Vintage Carriages Trust Museum of Rail Travel (five minutes) or Haworth for the Brontë Parsonage Museum (five minutes)? There are many ways to get your holiday here off to a flying start, including a whizz off down part of the Tour de Yorkshire cycle route called Goose Eye (five minutes), a riverside stroll at the handsome Hardcastle Crags (25 minutes) or a walk where the writer Charlotte Bronte supposedly once wandered, towards the Bronte Waterfall (10 minutes). With an art-packed former mill at Salts Mill (20 minutes) for those with an artistic streak and Skipton (half an hour), a market town on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, for the foodies and shopping fans, there’s a lot to fill your day with… and for the kids in the group, Hesketh Farm Park (half an hour) is likely to be a popular choice due to its animals, tractor rides and go karts.
