  • Dog-friendly site on the River Worth, with access to the Pennine Way
  • In Brontë country, two miles from Haworth’s Brontë Parsonage Museum
  • Excellent walks to Hebden Bridge; a five-minute walk to a pub
Always up for a good long walk or a getaway in an area packed with literary history? If your answer is yes – to both or either question – get your bags packed and make your way to Ponden Mill in West Yorkshire. The Pennine Way, a long-distance national trail, crosses near the mill, and there’s also access to excellent walks to Hebden Bridge or further away. This site is also part of the area known as Brontë country, so you’ll be surrounded by the landscapes that inspired the Brontë sisters’ classics. To explore those literary connections, you could start by strolling the two miles to the Brontë Parsonage Museum in Haworth (five minutes’ drive), although there are many more Brontë sites in the area – including the inspiration for ‘Wuthering Heights’ on the hill facing the mill. On site, you’ll be staying at a grassy woodland area alongside the River Worth. All pitches are generous in size, with most of them placed on flat, well-drained ground. There are excellent views too, as the site sits underneath Scar Top Chapel. Within 100 metres of the pitches, the main facilities include toilets, showers and a washing-up area. Dogs are also welcome. A pub is a five-minute walk away, and there are grocery stores in Haworth.

What customers say

Ponden Mill offers a peaceful, rural escape with stunning scenery and excellent access to walks. Visitors frequently praise the warm welcome from friendly and helpful hosts. While facilities are described as basic but clean, some reviews mention a need for updating, particularly regarding shower availability and hot water. Electric optional hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked My tiny caravan had a puncture before I arrived so I opted for tent this time.

It was a lovely small site nestled in the hills, very relaxed and had most things I needed.
There had been a pop up cafe and bar in the mill next to the site over the weekend but I missed this.

The roads to the site were very windy and often single lane; next time with the caravan I'd make sure I planned my route beforehand to avoid most of these.

It's virtually on the Pennine Way and Brontë way so lots of walking from the site. It was beautiful at this time of year with the heather in bloom.

Disliked No obvious hot water for washing up.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (no cars, solo)

Liked Beautiful location, camping beside the little stream with the gentle burble of water is very idyllic. It’s a quiet spot and a small enough site you likely won’t be disturbed. My motorcycle felt secure and I was able to camp near it. The popup cafe was good with proper homemade cakes.

Disliked The facilities are very basic, the gents lacked hot water and what little soap was available on Saturday was gone by Monday. Definitely bring your own soap or wet wipes. Only one male toilet could also mean queues in the morning.
Wifi stopped working on the first evening.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked Beautiful site by the river, a very friendly guy talked us through our pitch options.
Clean loos and shower, and level pitches

Disliked Didn't feel very welcome by the lady in the office and was over charged. Once I realised I had been over charged I emailed Ponden Mill requesting a refund, I have not received a response.

Be careful if you walk up to the nearest Pub, the road is quite dangerous for walkers.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Flat pitches.
Clean ladies toilet
Lovely area and a very friendly cat.
Spoke to the male owner who was nice and friendly.

Disliked Midges, although by the water so to be expected these were relentless and had to leave after one night due to us all being bit so much (even with repellant) The images made it look like plenty of room for tents when infact right next to each other. The washing up area was not clean and was blocked/very slow draining due to food.

If the washing up sinks and taps were fixed, we might come back.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Lovely spot with nice views. Friendly staff. Nice shower. (It is interesting on this website that you do not have an option in the review- you have to write about what you liked, but 'disliked' is optional....)

Disliked There were a great many campers using the one sink with one (working) (cold) tap. The other sink had a broken tap, and the first sink seemed to drain into it, so it was filthy every time we went to wash up. There were taps around the campsite, but they were not working.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked Beautiful spot by the river with lovely views. Pitches were nice and level but ground was really hard so you will need rock pegs if you're putting up an awning. Some lovely walking in the area.

Disliked Could do with more mens toilets as only one for whereas there are three women's toilets.
Shower was nice but floor was dirty so hard to keep clean after. Easily solved by providing a mop and bucket so campers can give it a quick swish after using.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked Lovely friendly place and the views are great. The lady who brought the breakfasts round and spoke to all the campers on her way round is a lovely touch. The walks around the area are really good and The Silent Inn pub close by was much better than some of the reviews it gets.

Local attractions

Climb aboard the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway (10 minutes’ drive) at Haworth station, and travel south to Oxenhope or north to Keighley. The line and the surrounding area provide the background to several scenes in the 1970s film ‘The Railway Children’, and grown-ups might be overcome with nostalgia during the ride. In Keighley (20 minutes), Cliffe Castle was built as the home of a wealthy Victorian textile manufacturer. It is now a museum full of furniture, art and decorative objects, plus displays of fossils, taxidermy and vintage toys. The gardens include several water features, an aviary and a playground. On the outskirts of the market town of Hebden Bridge (20 minutes) is Hardcastle Crags, a National Trust nature site with dog-friendly woodland walks. Assorted ponds, streams and waterfalls are home to frogs and other aquatic beasties, while woodpeckers and curlews are just two of the resident bird species.
