  • Dog-friendly site on the River Worth, with access to the Pennine Way
  • In Brontë country, two miles from Haworth’s Brontë Parsonage Museum
  • Excellent walks to Hebden Bridge; a five-minute walk to a pub
Always up for a good long walk or a getaway in an area packed with literary history? If your answer is yes – to both or either question – get your bags packed and make your way to Ponden Mill in West Yorkshire. The Pennine Way, a long-distance national trail, crosses near the mill, and there’s also access to excellent walks to Hebden Bridge or further away. This site is also part of the area known as Brontë country, so you’ll be surrounded by the landscapes that inspired the Brontë sisters’ classics. To explore those literary connections, you could start by strolling the two miles to the Brontë Parsonage Museum in Haworth (five minutes’ drive), although there are many more Brontë sites in the area – including the inspiration for ‘Wuthering Heights’ on the hill facing the mill. On site, you’ll be staying at a grassy woodland area alongside the River Worth. All pitches are generous in size, with most of them placed on flat, well-drained ground. There are excellent views too, as the site sits underneath Scar Top Chapel. Within 100 metres of the pitches, the main facilities include toilets, showers and a washing-up area. Dogs are also welcome. A pub is a five-minute walk away, and there are grocery stores in Haworth.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass motorhome pitch

Liked Pitches quite close together if you are on hookup. Owner lovely, great walks and local pub 5 min walk away. Very quiet

Disliked Didn't use the shower, ladies toilets basic cleanish. One men's toilet my husband struggled to shut the door. It was very stiff.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass motorhome pitch

Liked Beautiful area with attentive hosts. Great little area for wash up. The toilets have clearly had a lovely referb. Decided to pay for electricity as it was a cold March night but the site is peaceful enough not to need it

Disliked Although there is a pub close it did not appear to be walkable. There is however a lovely walk to the lovely village of Howath and a bus or taxi back

Electric optional hardstanding and grass motorhome pitch

Liked Great natural location, we put a 3.5t camper on the quite solid grassy area which had very good drainage. Owner offered to drive us into town but we had bus passes. (a bus ride is recommended, its amazing how the drivers cope with the narrow roads). Generally all seemed well during our stay.

Disliked The extra £10 per night for power is too much. The toilet waste disposal facility was disgraceful, a home made plastic dustbin with no flushing water was un acceptable. A nice little stainless steel steel unit with a rinsing facility as seen on many other sites would significantly improve my rating.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass motorhome pitch

Liked Nice welcome on arrival. Unmarked pitches -plenty of space. Great walks on the Pennine Way and Bronte Way direct from the site. On site cafe too. 20 min walk to two good pubs -one serving food. Owner kindly told us the way to walk into Haworth from site avoiding the busy main road-took 40 mins each way. Great wi fi. Overall a great weekend trip.

Disliked Only one unisex shower and one male toilet (3 ladies toilets) and one washing up sink. Not enough facilities for peak season when site is full with tents as well. Also not really suitable for large motorhomes as nowhere for them to dispense their grey water direct from their van - a guy dispersed his all over the car park - he was clearly embarrassed when we walked past and saw him doing this.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass motorhome pitch

Liked A site very useful for a visit to Haworth, which was our primary aim. Richard, one of the owners was good enough to come and find us when we sort of got lost trying to find the site, thankfully we were not far away, can be a bit tricky this one. He also gave us a lift into Haworth itself, very kind of him. The site is basic with one shower unit, Female toilet is modern, but the Mens is a bit dated.
Electric hook up and toilet emptying point, again a bit dated.

Disliked Probably the toilet waste point.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass motorhome pitch

Liked The location was very pretty, close to a nice pub.

Disliked This site is NOT suitable for touring caravans. Nowhere to dispose of chemical or grey waste. Shower was basic and toilet block also not particularly good. We had to stay on a grass pitch, no hard standing available although paid for. The hard standing is basically the car park. The ground was so wet impossible to put our awning up which we had also paid for.

Local attractions

Climb aboard the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway (10 minutes’ drive) at Haworth station, and travel south to Oxenhope or north to Keighley. The line and the surrounding area provide the background to several scenes in the 1970s film ‘The Railway Children’, and grown-ups might be overcome with nostalgia during the ride. In Keighley (20 minutes), Cliffe Castle was built as the home of a wealthy Victorian textile manufacturer. It is now a museum full of furniture, art and decorative objects, plus displays of fossils, taxidermy and vintage toys. The gardens include several water features, an aviary and a playground. On the outskirts of the market town of Hebden Bridge (20 minutes) is Hardcastle Crags, a National Trust nature site with dog-friendly woodland walks. Assorted ponds, streams and waterfalls are home to frogs and other aquatic beasties, while woodpeckers and curlews are just two of the resident bird species.
