A moonlit night

  • Northumberland glamping in a modernised heritage timber trailer
  • Hadrian's Wall, Kielder Water and Hexham within a half-hour drive
  • Two bedrooms, kitchen, shower room and private hot tub
A lovely bit of heritage is mixed up with modern comforts at River Rede Glamping, just outside the Northumberland village of West Woodburn. This area is well known for its rich history, and when you stay here you'll be in an excellent spot for getting out to explore some of that – perhaps heading to places like Hexham Abbey or Hadrian’s Wall. And it's equally well known for its stunning scenery, which you’ll be able to take in with walks in the Northumberland National Park, activities at Kielder Water or stargazing nights at Battlesteads Dark Sky Observatory. Bringing those two things together in one lovely place to stay is the cosy shepherd’s hut at this small glamping site. The heritage timber trailer was built in 1942 so it’s got a real sense of character, but it's been brought right up to date with modern conveniences including an ensuite shower room, a living area with sofa and TV, heating, wifi and a kitchen with cooker, fridge, kettle, toaster and coffee maker. Sleeping space is in two double bedrooms, each of which is supplied with bed linen and towels. You’ll surely want to be outside checking out the lovely views for at least some of your time here – the choice just remains whether to take drinks and snacks to your outdoor seating or bubble away for a while in your private hot tub. Access to the site is easy from the A68, and there’s a handy shop and pub less than a mile away in the village.

Local attractions

Heading here for the history? Start with a trip to Hexham (half an hour's drive) to visit the abbey and Old Gaol, then head a short way along the road to Corbridge Roman Town (20 minutes). That’s perhaps the closest part of Hadrian’s Wall, but there are plenty of other places to check out along the wall’s length, including Vindolanda and Housesteads Roman Fort (both half an hour). If it’s the fresh air and scenery you’re after, get over to Kielder Water (half an hour) for cycling, fishing and watersports, play a round at Bellingham Golf Club (10 minutes) or make new woolly friends on a walk with Ferny Rigg Alpacas (half an hour). There are lots of great walks around as well, including the Hareshaw Linn Walk and trails from Otterburn (both 10 minutes) as well as hikes in the Northumberland National Park. Northumberland National Park is the largest gold-tier dark sky park in Europe, so the stargazing around here is truly excellent. If you’d like some hints on what you’re looking at, book in for an event at Battlesteads Dark Sky Observatory (20 minutes).
