Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Lovely campsite. Pitched were well spaced out so you didn’t feel on top of each other. The site was nice a peaceful. Paul was so helpful. We had a lovely stay and would certainly return

Disliked: Nothing very pleasant stay

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: What a brilliant place! Beautiful scenery, dark skies and great views all around. The site has a limited number of pitches so you always have your own space; lots of eco-friendly touches with composting loos and plenty of recycling. The composting loos were the cleanest I've ever seen and it was great to see accessible facilities too, which isn't common on many campsites. Fresh eggs are available from the hens and lovely to see the curious alpacas in the next field - there's plenty of wildlife to see too, with swallows circling around and owls to be heard at night. A bonus was the 5 minute walk to the nearby bakery and the historic church next door. Paul was really friendly and happy to put us up for an extra night - we'll definitely be back.

Disliked: Nothing!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The scenery is stunning. Easy access and good location for either walking out from the site or driving into nearby areas. Paul and Gillian were lovely, super helpful and accommodating. They let our little ones help with the Alpaca feeding. The site is an Exo site, the facilities were all super clean and stocked. There are little crafty shops, a Running Fox and art gallery on site too. Would definitely return.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Great hosts, gorgeous setting, nice compact site and loved the 'green' ethos. Facilities are basic but good and all we needed for our short stay. At night I loved the brief glimpse (it was mainly cloudy!) of dense stars and the hoots of owls.

Disliked: The only thing that I can say I disliked was that the site is close enough to one of the main roads through Northumberland for you to be able to hear the occasional passing lorry. Traffic is light overnight and we were certainly not kept awake by it

Jean shepherd's hut

Liked: Layout of site (loved the idea of long grass separating pitches, with mown pitches and paths), comfort of the van, including bedding (woohoo - forgot about that, and necessarily warmer than my sleeping bag). I have to say I was a bit wary of the eco bit, but it was great, I think a good compromise between practicality and eco credentials. Friendly owners.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Friendly welcome, the owners are great - gave us lots of information and were so helpful! It is a lovely spot and good location for exploring. The kids loved the alpacas and having a fire pit for toasting marshmallows, the pitches are well spread out, the courtyard is close by with a shop/cafe. We loved it and hope to visit again!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Super friendly hosts, large pitches, lack of vehicles, camping behind a closed gate, all the high grass in which the kids could run about and play, proximity to the running fox at Kirkharle, wheelbarrows to cart around possessions, limited number of pitches, nearby larder/shop with Cranston's meat for sale, etc etc!

Disliked: Nothing

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Would highly recommend this site, hosts were so friendly/helpful, tents are well spaced out from eachother so you have alot of privacy, showers were brilliant everything has been well throught through, very clean, there is one large shower cubicle & one smaller shower cubicle which was ideal as me & my 2 children could all go in together without being squashed, same with the toilets one for one person then a larger one if your had young children that would need to go in with you, big enough for a pram or wheelchair to get in, ramps are available for both toilet access & shower access which is great. The alpacas were beautiful too watch was something different to wake up too, great that the running fox cafe is a 2 minute walk from the site also a park there too which is great if you have kids with you, once settled the hosts Gill & Paul kindly came down to our pitch & gave both of my children a chocolate bar with an activity sheet where they could tick off what wildlife they seen during there stay there was lovely touch. We took a drive to ponteland town centre only 15 minutes drive, & we had a lovely walk around bolam lake which is less then 10 minutes away from site. I took more videos then pictures of the site so unfortantly some of the pictures will be blurry as i have screenshotted the video to try show yous what it loos like 🙂

Disliked: It wasnt an issue at all for us, but some people may not like or be happy with the fact your tent isnt pitched up right beside your car like it would be on most sites, we didnt mind getting the extra steps in as there are wheel barrows for you too use on arrival to take your stuff from the car to your tent.

Local attractions

The campsite grants easy access to the handy A696 road, and within roughly 10 minutes’ drive you can be at the National Trust-owned properties of Wallington – with collections of paintings, decorative arts and ceramics – or Belsay Hall, Castle and Gardens, known for its neoclassical architecture and garden walks. Further afield, Cragside (half an hour) turns up art deco interiors and woodland strolls. Those of you with a fascination for all things historical can head for Hadrian’s Wall (20 minutes' drive) for a yomp in the footsteps of ancient Roman, or drop by the old Roman camp at Vindolanda (35 minutes). If the kids object to all that culture, treat them to close encounters with meerkats, raptors and giant bats at Northumberland Zoo (35 minutes), or spend the day at Alnwick Castle and Gardens (45 minutes), home of Harry Potter film locations, a curiously enticing poison garden and medieval enactments. Maybe they’d also like a day at the beach? Bamburgh (an hour) has seemingly endless expanses of sand and a stately castle to explore.
