  • Family-friendly back to basics site in rural Northumberland
  • A five-minute drive to Heddon-on-the-Wall and Hadrian's Wall
  • Campfires and barbecues allowed; historic pubs and alpaca farm nearby
Dubbed Hadrian’s Wall country, this was once the land of the Romans. It's hard to imagine the world of crossbows and armour now, but timeworn battlements, fortresses, and ramparts will help you to travel back in time… In the Northumberland countryside, close to the ancient Hadrian’s Wall (could this be the longest UNESCO World Heritage Site, at 75 miles long?), Pitch on the Wall Campsite is a small, family-friendly site smack bang in the middle of Hadrian’s Wall country. Within 15 minutes’ drive of Newcastle upon Tyne and five minutes from the historic town of Heddon-on-the-Wall, this is a fine base to conquer the country Roman-style, explore its networking of hiking and cycling routes, or chase through the sloping countryside, using the wall as your guide. This a back to basics site with just running water and portable toilets, so it's a real rural Northumberland experience. It wouldn’t be right to let your pooch miss out on all this greenery, so dogs are welcome too, and noise is kept to a minimum after 11pm so you can stock up on your snoozing for another day spent out exploring. You'll be able to keep warm of an evening as campfires are allowed on site (grab a firepit on site before they all go…) with wood available for purchase. Pub grub and wholesome meals are served at several pubs and cafes with a five-minute drive, but you may prefer to pull out all the stops for a family barbecue on site. Grab all the extra buns and bits for the grill at several shops five minutes away, or simply sign up for food shopping delivered through your tent flap on site.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Good simple site. Toilets very basic mobile toilets but we’re clean on arrival

Disliked: Unfortunately one tent with four adults spent all night singing, talking loudly, and playing heavy beat disco music. When I say all night they seamed to pause about 6am for a wee while. The penalty of a non managed site. It was a shame as other than that it was fine. We will not be back ~ sorry

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: This campsite is fab. It’s a simple campsite with portaloos but that’s all you need! The field is a big open space with trees around most of it so perfect when it’s windy. We have a dog that gets excited and wants to play when he sees other dogs and people close to us so always try to find a part where we can keep him tied up out the way and this place is perfect for it. Definitely recommend this campsite to anyone :)

Disliked: The one thing that was frustrating is a farmer ( I’m assuming the one from the field over ) comes every morning walking with his 3 dogs & doesn’t have them on a lead so they came up running into our tent, barking at our dog while he just calls their name. The 1st time he came up to us his dogs started barking in our dogs face, he barked back once with him being cornered by the 3 of them and then when he finally appeared after his dogs he said we shouldn’t have our dog there because sheep go into the field ( even though he was always tied up on a short lead ) then the second morning we quickly got him in the car out the way and the dogs were going through our bin bag and tent and things so if you’re at that one side with the field over be aware of that in the mornings, especially if your dog isn’t friendly as could end up a lot worse.

Local attractions

For rural explores, wander right into the farmlands from the site, join the Hadrian’s Wall at Heddon-on-the-wall (five minutes' drive), or feed the grinning alpacas at the nearby alpaca farm (five minutes). Those who prefer to travel on two wheels can hire a bike locally, glide alongside the river at Riverside Country Park (five minutes) or tackle England's largest forest in the west, Kielder Forest, where you'll need to pedal harder and faster to catch up with wriggling red squirrels and soaring ospreys overhead. History follows you everywhere you go in this area, whether it's Hadrian's wall (five minutes), the many historical beamed pubs or the birthplace of 'the father of the railways', George Stephenson’s cottage (five minutes). For a sandier day out, visit the craggy headlands of Tynemouth (35 minutes), whip out your bodyboard for Long Sands Beach, or raise your spears for action behind the battlements of the clifftop castle overlooking the beach.
