  • Pop-up campsite with views over Northumberland to the Cheviot Hills
  • A 20-minute drive to Newcastle and Corbridge Roman Town
  • Pick your own off-grid pitches; walks and cycle routes from the site
Off-grid vibes and walks along Hadrian’s Wall… that’ll do nicely, thank you. It’s strictly no frills at Ashtree Farm, a pop-up site for short stays on a working Northumberland farm near Heddon-on-the-Wall. Families, friends and well-behaved dogs are warmly welcomed – and when you arrive, feel free to hunker down wherever suits you best on the level, well-maintained camping meadow. There’s no electricity, but you do get a (unisex) portable toilet and drinking water from a hosepipe on the camping field, and the views looking north to the Cheviot Hills more than compensate for any lack of fancy facilities. Once you’ve settled into this peaceful corner of the north-east, you might like to fire up the barbecue (bring your own and use wood or charcoal only, please). Restock essentials from the convenience stores in Ponteland (10 minutes’ drive) or cheat and pick up a takeaway if alfresco cooking doesn’t appeal. In spite of its secluded hilltop location, Ashtree Farm is handily placed for exploring Hadrian’s Wall (five minutes’ drive) and its museums – and if you’re after a dip into a big-city vibe, it’s only 20 minutes’ drive to the bright lights of Newcastle upon Tyne. There are no facilities to handle rubbish on site, so please take it home and dispose of it responsibly.

Local attractions

First stop for all history buffs may well be Hadrian’s Wall (five minutes’ drive), which you can explore on foot or by car, stopping off at museums including Housesteads Roman Fort (half an hour) and Vindolanda (40 minutes) along the way. There are remains of a garrison at Corbridge Roman Town (20 minutes), while you can come forward in time to discover the seventh-century abbey at Hexham (half an hour) as well as the Old Gaol, dating from late medieval times and thought to be the oldest prison in the UK. But it’s not all history around here. The Tyne Valley is walking and cycling country, with plenty of circular trails in Tyne Riverside Country Park (10 minutes) and through woodland around Bolam Lake (20 minutes) as well as long-distance routes. If you prefer your exercise taken on the golf course, there are several within 15 minutes’ drive, and if you need a real incentive to get those hiking shoes on, consider taking an alpaca for a trek at Barn Acre Alpacas (five minutes). Budding daredevils can look forward to a day out at Go Ape Matfen (15 minutes), where they can zoom down high-speed zipwires or have a go at axe throwing (apparently it’s quite therapeutic…).

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked: .

Disliked: We were unable to get our panel van on-site due to the narrow gate and sharp angle off a narrow lane. We scraped the paintwork before giving up. Owner agreed to refund. Would be fine for cars and tents and small campervans, eg California size.
