  • Small, basic site in the grounds of a smallholding
  • Direct access to the A189; 20 minutes' drive from central Newcastle
  • Tree-lined site with farm animals; local buses nearby
When you're faced with a choice between the country and the city, this site will have you sitting pretty. Orchard Stables is a family-friendly site in a green spot that's also handily 20 minutes' drive north of central Newcastle. The smallholding site is just off the A189, a few minutes from the A1 and A19 and a couple of minutes' walk from local buses that'll drop you off right in the centre of town. There's also the option of parking at the train station (five minutes' drive) for a park and ride to the city centre. The site is surrounded by trees for a private feel, although due to its excellent road links there is some traffic noise. Orchard Stables is also home to friendly farm animals that you can spot on site (please make sure to keep a respectful distance, and don't feed or touch them). Basic facilities on site include a water supply, flushing toilet and bins (please note there is no chemical waste disposal). For easy eats, there is a wide variety of takeaways, a pub and Indian restaurants a few hundred yards from the site. The local town of Cramlington also has several large shops and a cinema. This spot is close to the culture, food and sport of Newcastle, but it's also quick to get out on jaunts to Northumbrian castles, country parks and the coast. Getting a walk closer to home is also a breeze – a footpath directly opposite the site joins up with peaceful Cramlington Nature Reserve. Travelling further afield? Orchard Stables is a great place to stop over on the way to Newcastle, Whitley Bay, Northumberland and its gorgeous beaches. Please note that, for the comfort of the animals and other guests on site, there should be no noise after 10pm. Because of nearby livestock, dogs must be kept on a lead; there's plenty of off-site walking nearby.

What customers say

A friendly, family-run site offering great value, ideal for a stopover or exploring Northumberland. Reviewers praise the flat, level pitches, convenient location near amenities and transport, and the unique appeal of farm animals. Facilities are basic but clean, with some noting a lack of an Elsan point. Despite proximity to roads, many found it quiet, particularly at night.

Non-electric motorhome pitch

Liked Email with clear directions for arrival.
Warm welcome.
Flat pitch, on shredded rubber, in the arena.
Toilet area basic but clean (in a stable unit that doubles as the yard laundry and storage)
Pigs as neighbours, yes, actual, real pigs!! So cute!!

Disliked Nothing.
Clearly stated what the facilities were in the description and everything was as stated. Nothing to complain about.

Non-electric motorhome pitch

Liked Flat level surface, was quiet enough later at night once the traffic had stopped. Very handy for restaurants and pub nearly, also a Starbucks in walking distance. Ideal location for our onward journey so we liked it.

Disliked It was surrounded by roads, but as I said it was pretty quiet later on except the occasional plane overhead.

Route directions

Follow signs for Northumbria Hospital A & E. At the hospital roundabout do not go into the hospital, but take the road labelled Ashington (B1326). Look for the entrance 80 yards along on the left (just before the flyover/ bridge). You can see the field from the roundabout. (Don't go into a housing estate as sometimes directed by a satnav; the Pitchup location is correct and will take you straight to the site.)

Local attractions

Fly through the woods on a mountain bike or take a slower woodland stroll at Plessey Wood Country Park (10 minutes' drive), a 100-acre wildlife haven with nature walks, riverside meadows and plentiful picnicking spots. There's an art-themed trail here, but those into their sculpture should make a detour to see Northumberlandia (10 minutes), a huge sculpture of a reclining female figure carved out of 1.5 million tonnes of grass and earth. Other stretches of well-maintained turf can be admired (and played on) at Arcot Hall Golf Club (10 minutes). Kids left bemused by the prospect of playing caddy for the day can instead be taken to Mr Mulligan's Newcastle (20 minutes), an indoor miniature golf course with kooky decor. Other family-friendly attractions in town include the Newcastle Discovery Museum and Great North Museum (both 20 minutes). Northumberland stately homes like Belsay Hall, Castle and Gardens (30 minutes) and Bamburgh Castle (an hour) are also likely to get top marks from visitors young and old, as are boat trips from Seahouses (an hour) out to the Farne Islands National Nature Reserve.
