  • Small family-run Northumberland site just outside Ulgham
  • Morpeth, Cresswell beach and Northumberland Zoo 10 minutes' drive
  • Dogs and kids welcome; peaceful atmosphere with quiet hours from 10pm
Northumberland is the UK's least densely populated county, so it’s a fine choice of destination for those seeking some peace, quiet and space to roam without crowds. And Kirk Field Banks, just outside the village of Ulgham, is an equally fine choice as a place to stay – this site is small, family-run and known for its peaceful atmosphere. There’s a good amount of space here, in fact, but guest numbers are always kept on the low side so that everyone has space to relax without feeling cramped. And that also means you’ll have scope to set up your gazebo, an awning, some camping chairs, a barbecue… essentially pretty much whatever you need to make yourselves feel comfortable. With trees all around for shade and shelter, there’s a nicely natural feeling here – and the owners have implemented a few rules to help preserve the peace for all guests. There’s nothing too rigorous, but large groups (especially hen/stag parties) won’t be accepted, and there’s a strict 10pm quiet time policy to allow everyone some well-earned rest. Kids and dogs are welcome here, with plenty of space to have a bit of a run about and designated dog walks running from the site. Simple facilities on site include showers, toilets and picnic tables along with chemical disposal for the tourers. Ulgham village is a tiny place so it doesn’t have a pub or shop, but it’s easy enough to drive or get a bus to Morpeth (10 minutes’ drive) when you need to sort supplies.

What customers say

This is a well-maintained, peaceful campsite with spacious pitches and friendly, helpful owners. Guests praise the quiet atmosphere, lovely surroundings, and proximity to local attractions and beaches. Facilities are generally clean, though some mention the toilet and shower block is basic and could benefit from an upgrade or more cubicles, especially during busy periods. The secure, gated site is ideal for a relaxing break.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked We recently spent a few nights at Kirk Field Banks Caravan Site near Ulgham, and it turned out to be a very pleasant and relaxing base. It easily rates as a great site, offering a laid-back atmosphere that is perfect for a getaway.
What Works Well:
Peaceful Atmosphere: The site is surrounded by mature trees, making it feel nicely secluded. They have a 10 PM quiet-time policy, which keeps the evenings calm and quiet.
Spacious Pitches: The pitches are well-sized and hard-standing and grass. A little close to the neighbours so you could hear their music, but otherwise spacious.
Friendly Management: The family running the site is helpful, welcoming, and keeps the grounds looking excellent.

Summary
If you are heading to Northumberland, Kirk Field Banks is highly recommended for its great location and peaceful vibe close to the fantastic beaches and historic castles. Just be sure to bring some flip-flops for the shower block in case other guests have left a mess behind. We would definitely stay here again.

Disliked The only Issue: Facility Etiquette
Our only real complaint during the stay was the state of the toilet and shower block. While the facilities themselves are adequate and clearly cleaned regularly, other campers often left them in a messy state. We encountered dirty, soaking wet floors and un-wiped sinks. It is a shame that a few inconsiderate guests let down what is otherwise a very well-managed setup. A few discrete signs reminding people might help.

Liked Quiet site, really peaceful and the wardens were fab.

Disliked The toilet block...one shower, one toilet, one basin wasnt great. We didnt pay the extra for the electric hookup seemed a bit expensive. We didnt even stay our 2nd night due to the limited facilities.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked Great welcome onto site. Well kept site, obviously Chris and Dave take pride in keeping it tidy. We were in caravan, but shower block was certainly serviceable. Lovely quiet site, amazing bird song each day. good size pitches also. Enjoyed exploring different places to the usual BIG named places. Cresswell beach and Druridge country Park where gorgeous, 10 mins drive from site. Morrisons at Morpeth best for groceries.Just be aware signal not great, but hey your on holiday ;-)

Electric optional hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked Good location, very spacious pitches, wardens were very friendly and helpful and even allowed our family an extra couple of hours after checkout time which was much appreciated.

Disliked I have to be totally honest but the toilet facilities are awful, there’s only one shower per men’s toilet and 1 per women’s toilet, the toilets are basically a porto cabin with 1 toilet. Unfortunately there was no soap throughout my 3 days and the hygiene has terrible, it’s got to be the worst toilet facilities I’ve ever experienced in my 30 years experience of camping. The owner has since contacted me to offer a refund if I reassess my score, if you look at a previous review he has also done this with a customer, it’s basically bribing you to put a higher score for a refund, this was never my intention when I completed my first review and I have evidence to show he offered a refund, when I chased this up it was apparent he didn’t want to do this unless I put in better scores, his customer service was appalling and his tone was very threatening, he even accused me of blackmailing and taking legal advice! He will no doubt came back with a different story just like he did with the previous bad review. I hope he can learn from this and not treat paying customers the lack of respect he had for me, a simple apology would have rectified the problem.

Nick M. 1 review

Electric optional grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Lovely, quiet, well maintained, clean and ideally located. The staff are very accommodating and friendly. Toilet/shower block is small but clean. Nice secure site with code operated gate lock. We had a very relaxing week camping, with a hard stand for the car and electric hook up for a fridge and kettle (luxury camping!). Thanks to the team onsite! Definitely recommend!

Disliked Could be closer to a pub, but the bus service works well. The crows were a bit noisy, but earplugs helped. Apparently more toilets are on the way after a refurb, though we didn't have to wait too long for a shower in the morning, and it was easy at other times.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks for the 10/10 Nick your right we know and want better facilities but it’s a planning and drainage planning permission job unfortunately but fingers crossed for next year so glad you enjoyed our site and there may be news on the pub very soon the team

Local attractions

Fancy a stroll? Head out from the site for a wander along the banks of the River Lyne, or head to one of the nearby country parks – Druridge Bay Country Park (10 minutes’ drive) is a popular choice. And of course there are heaps of walks and bike rides to try out in the Northumberland National Park (half an hour). For a change of pace, golf and fishing are both within 10 minutes as well. Throw in a dash of heritage by taking your strolls around National Trust properties at Wallington Hall or Belsay Hall, Castle and Gardens (both 35 minutes) or planning a trail taking in Hadrian’s Wall (40 minutes). Alnwick Castle (25 minutes) is another great choice, whether you’re there for the history or the Harry Potter connection. Family days out around here might take you to meet animals at Northumberland Zoo (10 minutes) and Whitehouse Farm Centre (25 minutes) or for a splash in the sea from Cresswell beach (10 minutes).
