Northumberland is the UK's least densely populated county, so it’s a fine choice of destination for those seeking some peace, quiet and space to roam without crowds. And Kirk Field Banks, just outside the village of Ulgham, is an equally fine choice as a place to stay – this site is small, family-run and known for its peaceful atmosphere. There’s a good amount of space here, in fact, but guest numbers are always kept on the low side so that everyone has space to relax without feeling cramped. And that also means you’ll have scope to set up your gazebo, an awning, some camping chairs, a barbecue… essentially pretty much whatever you need to make yourselves feel comfortable. With trees all around for shade and shelter, there’s a nicely natural feeling here – and the owners have implemented a few rules to help preserve the peace for all guests.There’s nothing too rigorous, but large groups (especially hen/stag parties) won’t be accepted, and there’s a strict 10pm quiet time policy to allow everyone some well-earned rest. Kids and dogs are welcome here, with plenty of space to have a bit of a run about and designated dog walks running from the site. Simple facilities on site include showers, toilets and picnic tables along with chemical disposal for the tourers. Ulgham village is a tiny place so it doesn’t have a pub or shop, but it’s easy enough to drive or get a bus to Morpeth (10 minutes’ drive) when you need to sort supplies.

Liked Great neat little site. Really nice lady warden. Very helpful and pleasant. We stayed in our camper van on our way north to home from a trip to Wales. My wife had an appointment at Wansbeck hospital only 15 minutes away. The shower block was old but very clean The site was quiet with good spacing between pitches. This is an ideal site to get to the wonderful Northumberland coastline.

Disliked Nothing much. The pitches a little out of level but no problem if you have leveling blocks.

Liked After our little dog was brutally killed by an xl bully at Cresswell beach both the warden Christine and the married couple who owned the site were the kindest people you could ask to meet. The sife was in a lovely setting. Small toilet and shower immaculately clean. Would say to everyone STAY HERE! Maybe don't go to Cresswell until they sort the roadside caravan sites. Would stay again in a heartbeat but the circumstances mean Northumberland is, for the foreseable future, off our radar.

Disliked Everyone gripes about the small shower/toilet block. There is a valid reason, it used to be a CL, 5 units only. Plans permitting, next year this will be resolved.

From the manager: Hi Craig we don’t usually respond to such low reviews as it affects our campsite rating. But on this one I feel I have too. first of all we’re well aware of the toilet and shower issues we have planning in for a new shower block for next year but we still have 2 portaloos and two normal toilets this is for 15 pitch’s.
Also the bbq and fire pit thing is a full uk ban we’re waiting for it to be lifted. Sorry you didn’t enjoy our site it’s not for everyone you

Liked Nicely situated near lots of interesting places. Amble in particular was a favourite of ours. Site was quiet, large well kept pitches with a very friendly warden. Plenty of space around the pitches and rural views all around.

Disliked The toilet facilities are very dated and there are not enough of them. We only had one toilet shower and basin for each sex (there was a portaloo sited at the extreme ends of the site but they did not seem popular!) We visited in mid September, but in high season the facilities must have struggled even more. The warden did her best to keep them clean but water from the shower spread everywhere. And the ladies needed a lock on the toilet that worked.

Fancy a stroll? Head out from the site for a wander along the banks of the River Lyne, or head to one of the nearby country parks – Druridge Bay Country Park (10 minutes’ drive) is a popular choice. And of course there are heaps of walks and bike rides to try out in the Northumberland National Park (half an hour). For a change of pace, golf and fishing are both within 10 minutes as well. Throw in a dash of heritage by taking your strolls around National Trust properties at Wallington Hall or Belsay Hall, Castle and Gardens (both 35 minutes) or planning a trail taking in Hadrian’s Wall (40 minutes). Alnwick Castle (25 minutes) is another great choice, whether you’re there for the history or the Harry Potter connection.
