  • Peaceful seven-acre site on a Northumberland working farm
  • Walk from site to Hadrian's Wall; 15 minutes' drive to Hexham
  • Families, dogs and groups welcome; accessible bathrooms available
Fabulous scenery meets fascinating history in the area around Greencarts – this peaceful Northumberland spot is in the lovely North Tyne Valley, tucked away between the Northumberland National Park and the North Pennines National Landscape. With spectacular countryside all around and the excellent Hadrian’s Wall just up the road too, it should make a nice stopover for walkers and cyclists. There are seven acres of camping grounds available at this working farm, so there’s plenty of space to go around. All sorts of guests are welcome here, including families, dog owners and groups, but please remember that this is a place that values peace and quiet – it’s not somewhere that tolerates groups that want to drink and make noise. Facilities on site include picnic tables, a launderette, a chemical disposal point and a washing-up area, and you’ll have access to bathroom facilities that include wheelchair-accessible areas. A small number of fire baskets are available to hire on site for cosy campfire evenings; those who’d rather be indoors for the evening can head to the pub five minutes’ drive away in Humshaugh. The village also has a shop, and there are supermarkets 15 minutes’ drive away in Hexham. Hadrian’s Wall is the big attraction around here, and you can hardly miss it – you can walk to part of it, and some of its top spots (including the Temple of Mithras and Housesteads Roman Fort) are within 10 minutes’ drive. Greencarts also makes a great base for walks in the national park, outings to Kielder Water and touring grand estates like those at Belsay Hall and Cragside.

What customers say

This is a well-regarded, spacious campsite with excellent views, ideal for visiting Hadrian's Wall. Guests praise the friendly, helpful owners and good value for money. Facilities are generally clean and functional, though some mention a need for minor upgrades. The site offers flexibility in pitching, with separate fields catering to families and those seeking quieter stays. While most reviews are positive, a few mention noise from large groups during busy periods and occasional queues for wash-up sinks. Electric hook-up pitches can have a slight incline.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked Friendly hosts, open space, being able to camp with groups. Tree swing and football goals for kids.

Disliked A little pricey compared to other sites for what you get. Toilet facilities clean but could do with a couple more and bit pf space to get ready.

Liked Great location with beautiful views - great stars at night.
Facilities were good.
Owner seemed really friendly (only saw her on arrival)
Would stay again.

Disliked We would be cautious about booking again on a school holiday, weekend night. It was really noisy late into the evening. (This is probably more about individual parenting and not directly in control of the site to be fair)

Local attractions

If you only see one thing while you’re here, it really has to be Hadrian’s Wall. Once you’ve seen the nearby portions of wall, set off to visit some of its highlights, including the Temple of Mithras (five minutes’ drive), Housesteads Roman Fort - Vercovicium (10 minutes) and Vindolanda (15 minutes). There are also some interesting exhibits to explore at the Roman Army Museum (20 minutes). Got a bit more time? The Hareshaw Linn Walk (20 minutes), taking you to a spectacular waterfall, is always popular, as is Kielder Water (half an hour), where you can go paddleboarding, kayaking and fishing, cycle along the lakeside path or climb up to the high ropes course. Heritage hunters may like to add places like Belsay Hall, Castle and Garden (half an hour) and National Trust - Cragside (55 minutes) to their list, while animal lovers visit Ferny Rigg Alpacas (35 minutes) or Hall Hill Farm (40 minutes). The costume and prop collections at The Museum of Classic Sci-Fi (25 minutes) may well pique your interest as well.
