The Dales Camping and Caravanning: So peaceful.

General

  • Well-maintained family-run site next to Thornton Steward Reservoir
  • On the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, 10 mins' drive from Jervaulx Abbey
  • Fishing passes available; great stargazing and wildlife-spotting

The Dales Camping and Caravanning is a rural site on the edge of Thornton Steward Reservoir in an excellent Yorkshire Dales location between Bedale and Leyburn (and around 10 minutes’ drive from each).

This is a handy spot to get to as it’s not far from the A1(M), and a handy spot for getting out and about too: Coverdale, Swaledale and the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty are all within a short drive. Cyclists have plenty of fine routes to choose from too, including following in the tyre tracks of the Tour de Yorkshire, which has run past here before.

Being so close to the reservoir also means easy access for fishing (with day passes available to pre-order) or to spend some time wildlife-spotting (oystercatchers, buzzards, owls and bats are regular visitors, and there’s also the occasional osprey and sea eagle). The rural setting is also excellent for stargazing: there were great views of the comet Neowise from here in 2020.

Several thoughtful touches have been thrown in at this site, including fire grates for your campfires and barbecues, a custom-built timber amenities block (with toilets, showers and a hot-water washing-up area) and wheelbarrows (sweetly named after the family's children) for carting your kit around so the site can remain car-free.

Dogs are welcome on site as long as they’re kept on a lead and owners clean up after them and dispose of mess in the bins provided.

Please note

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Protective masks must be worn at all times in common areas.

Discount cards and gift vouchers cannot be applied to bookings made via Pitchup.com.

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Needs more toilets and showers. Only 2 toilets and 1 shower for the whole site, needs more - they were clean most of the time, just needs more.

From the manager...

Hi Michael,

Thanks for your comment and we agree, thankfully they are on the way 👍
Unfortunately the larger block we ordered got delayed due to covid and didnt think we would get it at all this season, however they have come through and will be here and installed by 23rd June which will double what we have currently on site.

Hope to see you again. 🙂

    Everything!
What a wonderful place! From the moment we arrived everything was faultless. The site is so big and spacious which makes it seem even more peaceful. We’d booked a hardstanding pitch, but when we checked in we were told we could stay on the field if we preferred, and once we’d seen the field, we couldn’t resist.
The facilities are great and very well kept and there are so many options for pitches. It’s a perfect site for children with so
much space and a great play area.
There was no WiFi or signal which was bliss.
It’s location is great too with a beautiful reservoir next door for a walk or morning run and Leyburn just down the road for supplies.
