  • Spacious pitching field at a dog-friendly North Yorkshire pub
  • A 10-minute drive to Ingleton; Ribblehead Viaduct 20 minutes
  • Beer garden, play area and menu of locally sourced dishes
Prepare to be bowled over by this Yorkshire site – it certainly punches above its weight in terms of location and (perhaps more importantly) food. The Punch Bowl Hotel is in Low Bentham, a pretty North Yorkshire village with community features including plentiful public footpaths, a post office and a church, plus steam trains passing by every now and then. (It's also said to be where Queen Victoria had her silk bloomers made, but that's another story…). This is a top spot to base yourselves in for exploring the local countryside, as it’s close to heaps of excellent walking trails and attractions like Ingleborough Cave, Lancaster Castle and Ribblehead Viaduct – and it’s not far to the coast either, for a paddle at Morecambe beach. After a long day of exploring, it’s back to base for a refreshing pint and a tasty meal at the pub, which is known for both its friendly atmosphere and its menu of locally sourced dishes. You’ll have a choice of settling down in the pub’s cosy interior or taking a table out in the beer garden; the latter is likely to be popular with the kids, as it’s close to the play area. Dogs are welcome here too, both at the pub and on the pitches. The field has its own simple facilities in the form of a shower and toilet; there’s also access to additional toilets in the pub during opening hours. There's a village shop a couple of minutes' walk from base, but if you need a supermarket make tracks for Ingleton (10 minutes' drive).

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked Site was in a beautiful location, close to lovely villages and sites like the Ingleton waterfalls trail. The owner was friendly and helpful. My son really loved the playground and the opportunity to play with lots of other kids there. The live music at the pub both nights was a really nice touch.

Disliked This is a new site, so I appreciate there may be some teething issues. The site seemed overbooked - the numbered pitches weren't allocated so something of a free for all. A number of tents and caravans parked in non official pitches. One side of the pitch (which we were on) is on a slope, although it wasn't really a big issue.
We did however have a significant issue with noise on the first night, at 11.30pm there were still a good number of camps playing very loud music. By 1.30pm the tent next door (who'd been getting drunk at the pub) started shouting and swearing, having a full on domestic (in addition to loud music I'd already asked them to switch off). This blew up again at 3.30am, meaning we only got a few hours sleep, it was so bad I nearly called the police. Luckily our 5 year old is a heavy sleeper, but his pal two tents down was woken by it and was very distressed. Far from ideal on what is billed as a 'family site'.
I spoke to the owner who was apologetic and said others had complained, he gave us a free drink and assured me the family were leaving that day. The site was much quieter overall that night.
He said they were new to all of this, so I guess still learning. I do think there is a duty to have be some policing of sites in terms of noise nuisance (as there are on other sites we have stayed at) late at night, but my sense is they were overwhelmed and spread thinly running the pub at the same time. I appreciate that this instance of the dysfunctional family was likely to be out of the ordinary and we were unlucky. If you were at the other end of the site you probably wouldn't have heard it.
We were surprised there was only one shower and toilet, given there were 50 pitches and more camping in the middle, it's not adequate. Granted you did have access to the pub toilets 7.30am till 11pm. They were also cleaned each morning.

I think with a few tweaks (additional showers, more enforcing of the rules around noise - there was a notice up on the site but very unobtrusive, many would have missed this), not overbooking, it could be a really good site. My son had a blast.

Liked Lovely place . Hosts nice people ..has enough facilities to keep children entertained

Disliked The noise ..people who stayed at this site on Saturday night should be ashamed of themselves !!! I hope to never have the misfortune of sharing a camp-site with those people again..camp-site also seemed to be very over booked ..

Electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked 🤔

Disliked Too busy and over crowded made little space between tents and camper vans . Literally 1 shower which was flooding and 1 sink for washing facilities and 1 toilet which should have been cleaned more than just in the morning when pub closed. Booked table to eat on the Sunday night but was told on ordering they had run out of most on the menu, what we were able to order wasn’t great.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked Lovely location. Really hard-working staff who made you welcome.

Disliked Doesn’t affect my review of the actual camping location however I would avoid bank holiday weekends in the future because it was obviously very very busy. Only saying that because I disliked it but not the punchbowl in itself.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked The site is a good base for visiting the surrounding area.

Disliked The total disorganisation. It was a bank holiday weekend and people were packed in. There was certainly more vans/tents than pitches available. The distance between each pitche was minimal and certainly not the 8mtrs advertised, so if there had been any fire, the whole lot would have gone up.

A fight broke out between people who had pitched three campervans in two pitches and were very close to the tent and because there was vans and tents all over the field it was difficult to actually get out if you wanted to leave the site to go and explore.

The site is very disorganised and dangerous for small children running around (as they should) with so many vehicles, you certainly need to have your wits about you if you are a parent.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked Absolutely everything about our stay here was fantastic. Very clean bathing room with a super powerful shower, there is also a single loo for campers to use, and again this was very well maintained. The pub toilets are open from 7.30am to campers via the back door! We had an off grid pitch right outside of the well manicured beer garden (wasn't far to roll back home after a few drinks. Jeff and Helen are equally fantastic hosts and very accommodating with our individual requests. We felt very welcome from the very start, even the locals were very conversational, we had a good few laughs, to the point we were sad to leave, just this morning 😔 we will definitely be back, try to squeeze a trip in before xmas

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked Great location with so many walks straight from the campsite. It's a nice walk along the riverbank into High Bentham and you can go further afield and really explore if you feel like it. If not, the owners of the pub are very welcoming and we enjoyed our meal there. There was a singer in the beer garden on the Saturday afternoon which made for a good atmosphere. There's one shower which is very clean despite so many people using it (we were there Bank Holiday weekend) and one toilet (also clean) on the campsite but you can also use the pub toilets from 7.30 am which helped a lot. We normally stay on quieter sites so were a bit dubious when we saw how many people were pitched up (I don't think it's so busy normally) but we had a great time and will definitely stay there again.

Local attractions

Ingleton (10 minutes' drive) has plenty to keep you popping back – there's a (seasonal) heated outdoor pool, craft shops and the Ingleton Waterfalls Trail, an attractive and easygoing five-mile circular route. As the site is on the edge of the Forest of Bowland National Landscape and close to the Yorkshire Dales, there are plenty more trails around for all ages and abilities – including a challenging route up to the peak of Ingleborough (15 minutes). The scenery extends underground too, as you’ll see if you visit the dramatic Ingleborough Cave (20 minutes). And there are also manmade attractions, such as the impressive Ribblehead Viaduct (20 minutes), with a footpath running alongside. If you’re not into walking you can also catch a train on the scenic Settle to Carlisle line. Other local leisure spots include Bentham Golf Course (five minutes), Morecambe's attractive beachfront (30 minutes) and Kirkby Lonsdale's jaw-dropping Devil's Bridge (20 minutes). Travelling with kids? Take them to play knights and damsels at Lancaster Castle (30 minutes), go bowling in Morecambe (30 minutes) or cool off at Splash Park Happy Mount (30 minutes).
