  • Quiet site on the north-east coast between Filey and Scarborough
  • A 15-minute walk from Cayton Bay beach via a traffic-free path
  • Farm shop and café next door; pub 10 minutes' walk away
Some visitors wax lyrical about North Yorkshire’s coastline, while others are rather fonder of its countryside… so it’s handy indeed that you can easily check out both aspects of the county’s scenery during a stay at The Paddock Campsite. This quiet, friendly site is just outside the village of Lebberston, on the coast between Filey and Scarborough (both of which are within a 10-minute drive). For your seaside strolls, a traffic-free path runs down to the sands of Cayton Bay beach – it’ll take you about 15 minutes to get down to the beach, a wide bay that welcomes dogs all year round and is popular with birdwatchers, fossil hunters and rockpoolers as well as those seeking coastal walks or days spent on the sand. And for your country ambles, a drive of 15 minutes or so gets you up to the outer edges of the North York Moors National Park – although you can get a decent enough taste of the local scenery with the rural views around the park itself if you're not in the mood to travel far. Handy bonuses for guests at this site are a farm shop and café pretty much next door, and a pub about 10 minutes’ walk away. Barbecues and campfires are permitted on site if you fancy using some of that farm shop produce for alfresco cookery. Firepits are available on site to help with outdoor food prep and keeping warm; other facilities on site include three hot showers, three toilets, a clean water tap and chemical waste disposal facilities.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Proximity to the beach. Host was welcoming, approachable & helpful.

Disliked: Noise from adjacent glamping pods & hot tubs disrupting our pitch well into the early hours. Traffic noise from nearby main road which also disrupted sleep. Inconsistent signage for quiet hours, Pitchup listings say 10:30pm, signage on site says 11:30pm. Site was on a slope. No welcome pack/information. No dedicated car parking.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Lovely campsite with some lovely scenery around. 20 mins walk to the beech although I didn't manage to get down to it as I'm still recovering from a broken hip. There is a steep walk down the beech. Scarborough is just up the road and there is a pub 10 mins walk away. Toilets and showers were clean, however there were a lot of flies in there. Hired a fire pit for two nights for £25 including wood, kindling and fire starters which I thought was reasonable for the amount of wood we were given. Rebecca was very helpful and welcoming. They have some lovely pods and bell tents with hot tubs which I would love to try on our next visit. Thank you for having us stay and see you again soon. Vicki

Disliked: Flies in the loo.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: A lovely little site, a farm shop and cafe just next door too. The facilities were nice and clean. The beach was a 15/20mins walk which was nice and fairly flat. The path down to the beach was steep tho. Definitely be coming back to stay but will be booking a hook up pitch next time.

Disliked: There is no electricity points if you don’t book hook up, which I wish I’d known before hand but this was my second time camping so lesson learned. The field is slightly on a slant in some parts so next time I will try and book on a flatter pitch.

From the manager: Delighted you enjoyed staying with us & would return .We have a limited number of electric pitches & they do tend to sell out fairly quickly .I do however, as a courtesy offer free phone/ device charge & will supply a plug to blow up beds if required. I look forward to welcoming you again next season .kind regards Rebecca

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The showers and toilets were spotless. The local area was lovely to explore.

Disliked: The campsite is not particularly attractive- it is a small “rough and ready’ piece of grassy land on a bit of a slope next to the farm shop. It got quite crowded. Very loud road nearby that kept us awake at night. When I took a shower the water was cold.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Lovely location, close to the beach. And good to be able to have a fire.

Disliked: Firewood very expensive, so bring your own. Showers cold and feeble.

From the manager: Thankyou for taking the time to Review my Site.As you state the site is in a lovely location & close to Cayton Bay which is a great beach & only 15 mins walk ! Firewood is expensive to buy as it's kiln dried & used in the main, for my woodfired hot tubs which are in use daily & need to be fired up to heat the tubs I welcome campers to bring their own fire wood as supply does out strip demand .I also suggested at checkin that your party buy wood from local suppliers, The Spa petrol station next doors Farmshop as I wouldn't have enough for your 3night stay x 3 pitches .As regards the showers, I asked all campers to comment on the showers all said tge pressure was good & showers were warm.I did notice however when doing my checks that some children had left two hot water taps running , this may have contributed to a one off cold shower. All our showers are checked routinely & cleaned daily

Good but don't go when it's windy!

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Rebecca is a very welcoming host who even brought us a cup of tea whilst we were pitching up. For us, the location was perfect as there is a farm shop/cafe right next door that has fabulous food (at not ridiculous prices!), a short walk to the bus stop to either Filey or Scarborough, the Fair Collection next door and within a short hop to the circus. The site itself isn't huge which was also a bonus.

Disliked: Areas of the ground of pebbles and stony (building site grade) which made it difficult to fully pitch up the tent without breaking several pegs etc in the process. We also went on one the of the windiest weeks with the tail end of hurricane Lilly battering the coast line - not that that is the fault of anyone lol. However, the site is fairly exposed overlooking RAF Fylingdales letting the lovely North Yorkshire winds in and out of the cliffs we were camped on top of. Made for an interesting experience.

Local attractions

This is a most handy spot for getting out to a couple of North Yorkshire’s most loved seaside towns, so plan for days at the beach and animal park in Filey or taking in the castle, Sea Life Centre and Alpamare waterpark in Scarborough (before hitting the beach again, of course). Both are around a 10-minute drive away. For another view on the coast, grab your binoculars and wander quietly to see what’s in residence at RSPB Bempton Cliffs seabird centre (20 minutes’ drive). Or for some days away from the shoreline, head out to meet the creatures at Playdale Farm Park (10 minutes), sample Yorkshire’s first single malt at Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery (15 minutes) or try out the inflatable course and all manner of watersports at North Yorkshire Water Park (20 minutes). Fancy leaving the car behind for the day? Stash the keys somewhere safe and set forth on foot for Cayton Bay beach, Scarborough Fair Collection & Vintage Transport Museum or a dip at Flower of May swimming pool – all are about 15 minutes away on foot.
