Stay in a 2 bedroom classic holiday home

  • Well-maintained site with views over Castle Howard's Great Lake
  • Half an hour's walk or a five-minute drive from Castle Howard
  • Fishing and dog-walking area on site; close to a café and farm shop
Pitching up by a lake's a plus in more ways than one – as well as being an instant de-stresser, waterside surrounds can be a prime spot for fishing and, in the summer, ever-so-soothing boat trips. If you like the sound of that, hotfoot it down to Castle Howard Lakeside Holiday Park for views over Yorkshire’s poshest country estates. Fancy a stroll close to the water's edge? Go and seek out sweet and savoury goodies at the nearby café and farm shop (a mile away from site) – the latter can rustle up a nifty breakfast or barbecue pack that you can pick up on your arrival. There is also a shop on site selling a few essentials and lots of treats. Pick up a pint of milk, a bottle of wine, meat from the Castle Howard butcher or a tasty cake on site. The site's non-watery parts are also pretty splendid – this family-friendly park has a dedicated dog-walking area where you can admire mature trees while the pups and/or youngsters let off a little steam. It's also got handy practical features like smart loos and showers and a laundry room. Though there's plenty of scope for sticking to the estate during your time here (especially if you're visiting during one of the high-season concert weekends), active off-site jaunts around the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty come highly recommended, too – the surrounding area's full of cycle paths, bridleways and hiking trails.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Location, good facilities, friendly and helpful staff, even the weather was good!! I was originally booked in for 4 nights, this was an additional night as I wanted to stay a bit long, so 5 nights in total.

Disliked: Pitch I was on was very baron with hardly any grass. Very dusty too so the tent was always dirty on the floor as it got trailed in. Also tent caked in tree sap and bird muck due to location of pitch being under trees. Didn't spoil the break though.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Lovely location close to Castle Howard and nested beside the lake with its many swans and ducks. Very beautiful and peaceful. Warden friendly and helpful. Facilities are good. The shower block is new - could have been designed better with more toilet space and better sink facilities. Nice walks from the site and we came across filming for Blueberry Inn which was exciting

Disliked: Busy at the weekend but quietened down at the weekend.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Clean facilities

Disliked: Avoid during busy times. It’s described as peaceful but it wasn’t. They really cram you in on the touring field - being told ‘we can get 50 units in easy’ might be true but it felt like a festival car park without a festival!!

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to write your review Kath and thank you for commenting on the cleanliness of our facilities. We appreciate your time and your views. It is a shame that your visit wasn't as you were expecting or as peaceful as you would have liked but as a very popular and lovely location we naturally have busy periods, especially some weekends through the warmer months. For the majority of the time, especially mid-week, Lakeside is a great place to chill and enjoy the surrounding countryside. Regarding the size of the camping field; it is unallocated so that guests are able to choose their pitch; many campers like to position themselves around the edge but there is still ample room in the central area of the field even when we are at our capacity.

Local attractions

Yorkshire folk are rightly proud of 'God's Own Country' – it's home to some of the finest historic houses, coast and countryside around. If you want to keep things local, head out to Kirkham Abbey (15 minutes' drive) to visit the ruins of the priory or for waterside strolls along the Derwent river. Like to be beside the seaside? Of course you do, and luckily this area has plenty of options to choose from. If you fancy venturing to Whitby's harbour and beaches, drive to Pickering (25 minutes) and hitch a ride on a steam train for a stonkingly scenic journey over the North York Moors. Bempton Cliffs Seabird Centre (an hour away) is a rather wilder beauty spot – this nature hub is home to about a quarter of a million nesting seabirds (so be sure to pack your binoculars). Art, architecture and landscaped grounds can all be rather moreish, so check out other historic houses in the area, like Nunnington Hall (20 minutes), Duncombe Park (25 minutes), Sledmere House (30 minutes) and Beningbrough Hall (40 minutes), if you fancy a change of scene on your blue-blooded escapades.
