Aysgarth Falls Caravan and Camping Park: Rural views all around

General

  • Small, peaceful site next to Aysgarth Falls in the Yorkshire Dales
  • Hawes, Bolton Castle and The Forbidden Corner within 15 minutes' drive
  • Large pitches with easy access from the A684; bar/restaurant next door

If you’re writing a list of the best spots to visit in the Yorkshire Dales, Aysgarth Falls is bound to be on it… And if you’re planning to visit Aysgarth Falls, well, where better to settle down for the night than a site within a few minutes’ walk?

The falls are the main attraction here – they’re five minutes away on foot – but Aysgarth Falls Caravan and Camping Park has more to offer as well. For starters, there are lovely views out over Wensleydale from all of the peaceful pitches, and plenty of local footpaths to wander along nearby to seek out more scenery. It’s also handily placed just off the A684 for easy travels – oh, and it just happens to have a bar and restaurant next door serving up home-cooked local produce alongside some of Yorkshire’s finest ales…

The pitches at this North Yorkshire site are fairly small in number but large in size, with access to essential amenities including a washing-up area, toilets and a heated shower block. Shops are 10 minutes’ drive away in Leyburn, and there’s a rather tasty prospect two miles away at the Wensleydale Ice Cream Parlour.

Once you’ve spotted the falls and eaten the ice cream, what next? This location is within easy reach of several other attractions, including Bolton Castle, The Forbidden Corner and the Wensleydale Creamery as well as the many waterfalls, waterways and walks that the Dales are famed for.

Please note

The bar is open between 01/01 and 31/12.

Lovely walk to Aysgarth Falls which was nearby

    Disliked:

This isn’t really a campsite at all it’s more of a pub stopover. Considering it was £40 a night I would have at least expected a discount for drinks/meals in the pub or free Wi-Fi but the very least I would expect is a toilet block and not a loo in a standard garden shed

The staff were outstanding and couldn’t have been more helpful both on site and whilst running the pub. Mixing well their attention to locals and visitors.

Great location, perfect for both long and short walks

    Very peaceful

Facilities were everything one needed if a bit basic……. But it’s a campsite, not a hotel so perfectly adequate

    Disliked:

We had a really nice flat pitch in the corner (grass pitch number 11) which was excellent and flat….. i could see if it was crowded then it might be on a gradient….. but again thats the process you pay for being in such a great location

Pitches are large and well-tended. The hotel serves good food and beer. The staff were very helpful. The Aysgarth Falls are breath-taking.

    Disliked:

The facilities are horrendous! B&Q budget 6x4 huts with solar lights - two shower units that are mouldy, smelly and function poorly. Two toilets with doors that do not close properly and are positively mediaeval. Washing facilities are two uncovered, metal framed sinks that are useless in rainy weather - remember this is in Yorkshire! It is a real pity that the facilities are so poor as the situation and the rest of the site maintenance is so good. If you are a self-contained unit with no recourse to on-site facilities then there will be no problem.

    Disliked:

Awful facilities. Have stayed here in 2019, but the 'shower sheds' are absolutely awful now. We booked for two nights but left after one - it was actually more enjoyable to wild camp than use their facilities. I feel really sorry for the staff - the hotel/pub looks really run-down.

The location! Absolutely the best location with walks from the site and the falls a stones throw away. There is a fabulous tea room next to the bridge and it is an easy walk into Aysgarth where the garage has a great shop. The pitches are a generous size too.

    Disliked:

The facilities. It has 4 garden sheds that house the loos and showers. The website says shower block but this is not the case. It is honestly the worst facilities we have used on a campsite. The doors on the sheds barely fit and anyone can peep through the gaps! I would definitely use this site again only because we are self sufficient. There is fresh water and a dump point and the wash up sinks were ok but only if the weather is kind. We didn't like the fact that no children are allowed on site as we had our family staying nearby.

Local attractions

With the falls being only five minutes away on foot, you’ll need to look a little further afield if you’re planning to hike in this area. A few local beauty spots to include on your trips might be Cauldron Falls (half an hour’s walk), Semerwater (15 minutes’ drive – and also a place to fish, swim or launch your kayaks/paddleboards) and Middleham Castle (15 minutes).

Beyond all that, of course, is the entirety of the Yorkshire Dales – easy road access here means it’s straightforward to get out to popular places like Buttertubs Pass (25 minutes), Grassington (40 minutes) and Malham (an hour).

The imposing Bolton Castle (10 minutes) and the ruins of Jervaulx Abbey (20 minutes) should be on your to-visit list too, as should the Wensleydale Creamery (15 minutes) for tasters of the area’s famous cheese. The weird and wonderful walkways of The Forbidden Corner (15 minutes) make a great day out too, especially if you’re looking for ways to get the kids outside.

Must see

  • Jervaulx Abbey (10.2 miles)
  • Richmond Castle (12.6 miles)
  • Easby Abbey (EH) (13.1 miles)

National Trust

  • Braithwaite Hall (7.3 miles)
