Pitches under the trees

  • Peaceful adults-only campsite 25 minutes by bus from central York
  • York Designer Outlet and the Howardian Hills both 20 minutes' drive
  • Sheltered dog-friendly pitches with an on-site café and gift shop
Up for a dog walk along a bubbling beck straight from your pitch, or would you rather spend your days sightseeing in historic York (20 minutes by bus)? Whatever your holiday style, North Yorkshire’s Willow Campsite is bound to have a quiet corner in its tree-sheltered camping field that’s just right for you. Tucked away by two wildlife ponds – where you can spot ducks and occasional kingfishers flitting among bullrushes – tree-shaded Willow Campsite forms part of a larger, adults-only holiday park. Your needs are very well taken care of indeed; you can refuel in the wooden-beamed Willow Farm Café (open daily 9am–4pm, they do a delicious afternoon tea and there’s a souvenir shop right next door), or fire up a barbecue (raised off the grass please). If that doesn’t appeal, make a beeline for the local foodie pub (half an hour’s walk) instead. The site also has a bunch of handy practical facilities, from disabled access and wet rooms in the amenities block to a pot-washing sink and laundry room. Wifi reception can be a bit patchy around the camping area, but it’s strong in the café. This being North Yorkshire, there may be the odd rainy day – but never fear, there’s a cinema and bowling alley at Clifton Moor Retail Park (10 minutes’ drive), or you could console yourselves with an afternoon’s shopping at York Designer Outlet (20 minutes).

What customers say

This campsite is praised for its cleanliness, tidiness, and peaceful atmosphere, particularly by the pond. It's well-located for exploring York with a bus stop directly outside. Facilities, including showers and toilets, are generally described as clean and adequate, with a nice on-site cafe. However, some visitors experienced issues with toilet cleanliness, distance to facilities, and a lack of amenities for tent campers. Wifi coverage is also noted as limited.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Loved the pond end of the site where I was pitched in my rooftent. It was peaceful and there were moorhens wandering around. The site is clean, tidy and well kept. There is a lovely cafe and shop onsite too. I used the campsite as a base to go and explore York. The bus stop is right outside the front gates so very handy.

Disliked The only slight dislike was the road noise but that was just because it was a very still night I think. For the convenience of getting into York, the road noise was a small price to pay.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Nothing about the site

Disliked Overflowing bins not enough toilet or showers was a portal toilet by a tree dirty a dead duck on the grass by the pond and no pitch just told to go near the end of the field which had 4 tents together with guys drinking dear did not feel safe so went to a hotel

From the manager: Hi, I am sorry to read this, and very sorry that you chose not to call us while you were here to see if we could help with any of the things you werre having dificulty with.
We did have a problem with the bins this week - the company were unable to collect them due to a car blocking the entrance to the site - they also chose not to inform us, but once we realised we got them back and the problem was solved.
As for the duck, unfortunatley the foxes do get to them now and then, all part of being in the country, but now we know about it we will try and find it to remove it. The portaloo is cleaned extensivly everyday, and is there for emergency midnight wees, to save you the walk to the main site toilets. As all toilets, they are only ever as clean as the last person to use them.
There will probably always be other campers on site - that is the idea. We currently have no way of defining pitches, as we feel it is nicer for people to choose where they pitch, but this seems to be a problem for a few people, so we will probably change this over winter when we have opportunity to amend the site layout.
If you had of called us we could probaly have sorted something out for you while you were here, we cannot help you days after you have left, and to be fair it is unfair to give us the chance to address any peoplems you find.

Local attractions

Keen historians might start their exploration of York (25 minutes by bus/15 minutes by car) at the landmark Minster, where free guided tours take in the glittering stained-glass Rose Window as well as Roman and Anglo-Saxon artefacts in the Undercroft Museum. Continue your immersion in culture with an amble around the Roman/medieval city walls, stop into the Castle Museum to see recreations of Victorian streets and book evening events at the Barbican theatre. There’s more rich heritage to be admired at gorgeous Castle Howard (half an hour’s drive), with sumptuous apartments stuffed full of great art from the likes of Reynolds and Gainsborough. National Trust-owned Beningbrough Hall (15 minutes) is a close contender in the arts stakes, with a collection of paintings squirrelled away from London’s National Gallery. Anyone with an interest in wildlife can find plenty to see and do: there are raptor flying displays at York Bird of Prey Centre (15 minutes), while a wander in the Howardian Hills National Landscape (20 minutes) might bring you sightings of deer and hares in woodland and meadows. If your interest veers towards more powerful beasts, there’s flat racing at York (also 20 minutes) and a jumps course at Wetherby (half an hour).
