  • Adults-only grass pitches behind a pub in Osbaldwick, North Yorkshire
  • York city centre half an hour’s walk; Castle Howard 25 minutes’ drive
  • Welcoming restaurant and lounge bar open Tuesday through to Sunday
Looking to be close – but not too close – to York’s many attractions? The grass pitches behind the adults-only Derwent Arms in the North Yorkshire village of Osbaldwick might suit you very well. The centre of York is only half an hour’s stroll away, and those who prefer to use public transport can use bus number 6, which stops right outside the pub. It's a 10-minute ride into the city. The pub itself serves quality homemade food, and provides a relaxed space for knocking back a pint or two of Yorkshire bitter. You can move outside to the beer garden on long summer evenings, or cosy up around the two logburners on colder days. And when you want some of that bracing Yorkshire air, there are walks direct from the pitches, handy for the stretching of legs – and paws if any dogs are with you. Caravans and motorhomes are welcome, but please note that you must have your own facilities. While there are toilets in the pub, they can only be accessed when it opens at 12pm. Both the pub and restaurant are closed on Mondays.

Local attractions

The city of York (half an hour’s walk) may be your first port of call. Walk its splendid defence walls – a mix of Roman and medieval constructions – and admire the stained glass in the spectacular 13th-century minster. Vintage train buffs can make a beeline for the National Railway Museum, while lovers of history discover the recreated period shops and houses at York Castle Museum. When the weather’s smiling on you, take a boat trip down the River Ouse or have a stroll around the relics of St Mary’s Abbey in Museum Gardens. If clouds should gather, take a light-hearted look at life (and its smells) in Viking Britain at the immersive Jorvik Viking Centre. Further afield, you can admire the peerless John Vanbrugh design of Castle Howard (25 minutes’ drive), and wander around classical follies in the grounds. Other day trip options include a steam-train ride across the North Yorkshire Moors from Pickering (40 minutes), or admiring eagle owls in flight at the National Centre for Birds of Prey (45 minutes).
