Pitches with space for an awning

General

  • Clifftop site with sea views a mile from Whitby town centre
  • Easy access to walks on the coast path and in the North York Moors
  • Playground, games room, shop, bar and café on site

Splendid, spectacular and famed Whitby… known for the Whitby Regatta, lipsmacking fish and chips, a fanged Transylvanian count and of course the Whitby Goth Weekend, where hordes of alternatively-dressed folk descend upon town twice a year to follow in Dracula's footsteps: how fab.

Near all this for family hols is Whitby Holiday Park, a mile from the harbour and town centre of Whitby on the clifftop overlooking Saltwick Bay. As well as the town and its ancient attractions, miles of beaches are easy to get to from here, along with tiptop walking and cycling on the coast path or in the North York Moors National Park.

The site's facilities include a bar, a café serving hot meals and homemade cakes to get your teeth into for eating in or taking away. There's also a playground, a games room and a shop selling groceries, newspapers, wines and spirits.

Among the amenities are washrooms with showers, toilets and accessible facilities; a launderette and a parent and baby bathroom.

The park has free wifi.

Booked online for what i thought was a tent, only to arrive and setup to be told we don't allow tents..
They did let us stay as we was already set up but we was constantly reminded WE don't allow tents..

Personally i don't see how a tent and a campervan awning is any different

Lovely reception staff, great site with cinema, pub, cafe, toilets, showers, laundry all spotless, secluded bay down the steps from the site, lovely walk into Whitby past Whitby Abbey then down the 199 steps into beautiful Whitby town with cobbled streets and plenty of shops, pubs, cafes and restaurants. If the steps seem too much for going back to the site there are plenty of taxis opposite Weatherspoons at a cost of £7.20.
Also enjoy a great day out at Robin Hoods Bay or Scarborough by bus from Whitby bus station £8 return.

We loved the site and surrounding scenery. It has a nearby beach and a superb view of Whitby Abbey with Whitby town only a mile's walk away over the cliff tops. There are great amenities onsite; the shop, cafe (great food!) and pub were very handy. The piches were of an ample size and the site was kept extremely clean and tidy as were the shower and toilet facilities. We'd initially booked two nights but ended up staying for two more as we were so impressed.

    Disliked:

Our only gripe (a very small one) was that although the onsite pub allowed dogs the room available was small and on a lower level to the rest of the pub making it feel a little isolated.

    The views are stunning.
This site is on the Cleveland way and in an area of outstanding natural beauty.
The walk past the abbey to the town is pleasant and well worth it.
There is a play park and good walking for dogs.
Plenty of space on the touring pitches to allow for an awning and a car.
Then cinema room in the bar has comfortable couches.
    The bar opens at 6:00
The cafe was popular but not open on Thursday.
There is a shop with limited provision and closed on Wednesday.
It is easy to get a taxi back from Whitby if you need things and they are not available. Grounds well maintained. Wifi on pitches.

    Disliked:

Some pitches really uneven although ours was level.
Only one key for toilets, would be better with a code entry so you don't have to share or wait.
No where to get cooked food when cafe closes or in the evening.
Soon gets muddy when it rains.

Location great - short walk along coast path to the abbey and steps into Whitby centre. Lovely town, nice fish restaurants. Cute shops
On site nice little cafe food was good. All staff we encountered were great
    Scenery was gorgeous

    Disliked:

Site was clean and organised. Showers were a 'test'...you have to hold the button in almost constantly so if you stop to shampoo you have to find it with your eyes closed to get the water running again

Directions

From the north and from Pickering, approach Whitby on the A171. At the traffic lights turn right, going over the new bridge and following signs for the Abbey. Take the first turning on the left and then the first right up Green Lane to the T-junction. Turn right and the park is the third turning on the left.

From Scarborough, take the A171 through Hawsker. Turn right, following the signs to the YHA. The park is on the right, approximately two miles down the lane.

Local attractions

Whitby first, natch, for its many attractions old and new including Whitby Abbey, the Captain Cook Museum with HMS Endeavour replica, the harbour, art galleries, old pubs and award-winning seafood restaurants. Scarborough, Filey and Bridlington are all easy to flit to from here.

Swimming, rockpooling and fossil hunting at local beaches should be next; after that, make it your mission to hike part of the Cleveland Way, the 110-mile coastal path that runs next to the site. A mile away, walking and cycling can be had on the Cinder Track, the former Scarborough to Whitby railway line.

Another top local option is Robin Hood's Bay four miles away, a North Yorkshire fishing haven day and night where specimens of up to 20lb have been landed. Horse riding is within the same distance, or you could have a puff on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, running for 18 miles through splendid moors scenery from Grosmont to Pickering via Goathland.

Brought your bike? Tackle the trails from England's largest mountain bike trail centre at Dalby Forest, 15 miles away.

Must see

  • Whitby Abbey (0.8 miles)
  • The Moors National Park Centre (12.4 miles)
