  • Quiet family campsite with views of the North York Moors National Park
  • A 10-minute drive to Robin Hood’s Bay, and 15 minutes to Whitby
  • Shared kitchen and showers; Coast to Coast Walk 10 minutes’ hike away
With stunning views over the North York Moors National Park from its spacious camping field, Newton House Farm is a small, family-run site on a working farm. It makes a clever base for exploring the local area – the moors and the coastline – and is a handy overnighter for hikers on the Coast to Coast Walk (10 minutes’ hike) before completing the final 10 miles into Robin Hood’s Bay. Although the vibe is almost-wild camping here, there are some facilities (but no electricity, bring torches) to make life easy for guests. There is a main amenities block which has a kitchen area (with a microwave and washing-up amenities) and toilet and shower rooms. There are also two separate (and modern) toilets on the same level as the pitches. Please be aware that the nearest convenience store is in Sleights (10 minutes’ drive) and the closest major supermarket and cash machine are in Whitby (15 minutes), so be prepared and pick up essentials on your way up to the campsite. The site isn't on any public transport routes. There are lots of easy rambles straight from the camping field; Falling Foss Waterfall (10 minutes’ walk) is tucked under the tree canopy in Sneaton Forest, where kids can splash around in May Beck or play pooh sticks from the footbridge while mum and dad have a restorative cuppa at Falling Foss Tea Garden.

What customers say

This campsite offers stunning views and is praised for its cleanliness and excellent facilities, including a communal kitchen. Its location is ideal for exploring Falling Foss waterfall and nearby Whitby. While many enjoy the peaceful atmosphere, some guests found the sloping pitches challenging, impacting sleep and setup. Limited toilet and shower facilities can lead to queues during busy periods. Overall, it's a highly recommended site, with many visitors expressing a desire to return.

Snowdrop camping pod

Liked The views were amazing! The pod itself and private toilet facilities for the Snowdrop pod made the experience extra special and easy. The walk from the car was very short and the site was quiet, partly due to how sound proof the pod was. The facilities were very clean and the site had a lovely feel to it.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked The amenities were very good warm showing and warm water for washing up, aswell as a communal fridge and charging facilities. The location of the camp site was perfect with Whitby and robin hoods bay with 10 minutes drive with a water fall and cafe a little walk down the road just be ready for getting muddy and nearly dying if you want to get to the bottom of the water fall

Disliked The sign for the campsite is on the wrong site of the gate so you drive straight past it then turn around and see it on your way out

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Location was very good and met our needs.

Disliked We stayed Sunday to Friday site was approx 50% full and facilities were very good, clean and well maintained. We opted not to stay at the weekend as site showed it would possibly be full. This could possibly lead to pressure on the facilities.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked The view is absolutely stunning 10/10! We were a family of four with two children 5 and under- they loved the slide and making friends with other children there.
The showers were modern and clean, I have long hair and had no issues with the pressure to wash it.
A lovely surprise was the little kiosk on a morning selling bacon sarnies and a coffee- the lady who works there was so friendly and helpful.
The campsite can get a bit windy but it is on the moors so that’s expected, just make sure you take some strong tent pegs.
Loved it here and will be back.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Lovely views, and a nicely stocked kitchen area with all the things you might need or have forgotten to pack. Communal fridge and freezer, and charging points very handy.

Disliked Campsite is in a bit of a hill so awkward to pitch and live in a tent on a hill like that.
Can’t park your car on the campsite (a barrow was available to help carry your stuff to your pitch)
The car park is horrible to get to. Some very uneven concrete beams to drive over and it shakes your bones to pieces unless you have some major off-roader.
The showers took ages to warm up and even then the water pressure was very low.

Route directions

The turning off the B1416 from Whitby is signposted Newton House & Falling Foss. Follow this road until you reach the campsite car park signposted to the right. Follow the sleeper road through the field. The car park is at the end. Please leave your vehicle here and walk to the pitch. Each pitch is numbered, and guests can pick their own pitch. The What3Words location for the car park is: punctual.warm.roost Please note: If you are travelling on the A169 from Pickering, following a sat nav, please do not take the right turning to Littlebeck off Blue Bank. Instead, continue following the road into Sleights then take the right turn (at the fish and chip shop), signposted Robin Hoods Bay. Your sat nav should then direct you from there.

Local attractions

The pretty fishing village of Robin Hood’s Bay (10 minutes’ drive) beckons families for its indie shops in alleyways twisting down towards the harbour, and the chance of finding ancient fossils and ammonites on its sandy beach. From the clifftops above the village, walk a section of the Cleveland Way to Ravenscar (an hour and 20 minutes’ walk) to spot the seal colony in its bay. Whitby (15 minutes’ drive) is dominated by its Gothic abbey and St Mary’s Church set atop the East Cliff, while you can learn all about local hero Captain James Cook at the Cook Memorial Museum. The harbour is the jumping-off point for day cruises out to (hopefully) see dolphins and whales in the North Sea, and you can also climb aboard the North Yorkshire Moors Railway to the lively market town of Pickering (half an hour). To get active as a family, head for Danby Lodge National Park Centre (half an hour) to follow its sculpture walk, have a go at playing quoits or scale the walls in the climbing cave (kids only). At Ruswarp (10 minutes), you can hire rowing boats to paddle along the River Esk, or walk into Whitby along the scenic East Valley Walk (about 20 minutes’ stroll).
