Did somebody say spectacular views?

The Game Larder is a working sheep and cattle farm, set on a hilltop facing most scenically down the Esk valley and opposite Danby beacon. The views are spectacular and the sunsets even more so, and you'll have your own private decked terrace at which to settle back admire both at your leisure any time of day.

Acquired originally for the local shooting estate around the turn of the 20th century, the lodge was hewn from cedarwood and spent most of the last century hidden unused in the woods until it was relocated and repurposed as somewhere for retreating peeps to use as a luxury glamping getaway.

With a small fridge, an electric hob, a kettle, utensils and a toaster at your disposal in the lodge (and a large fridge freezer in the amenities block for more sizeable foodie stocks), you’ll not need to move for much once plonked; pick your fave flick from the DVD library, light up the woodburning fire and cosy up for an evening in front the box, or go for something mildly more cerebral with a book or a board game.

When the day is done, clamber up to the cosy mezzanine for a restful night’s slumber in the cabin’s comfy double, or fold out the sofa downstairs if your days outdoors have you too weary to make the short climb. Bring your own bedding and towels or pay a small fee to rent from the site.

We stayed for three nights for my girlfriends birthday treat weekend away and had a Amazing time . The views are spectacular and the accommodation was very good and very quant ,although there is no running water ,or toilet facilities in the hut the shower and toilet block was only just behind so wasn’t a issue . The nearby village of Lealholm is lovely (amazing food in the Board Inn ) and has transport links into Whitby and surrounding areas . Would highly recommend it for a base to explore the North York Moors and to unwind and relax .

I spent a week here surrounded by the peace, tranquility and stunning views of the North Yorkshire moors and Fry Up valley. This place really is one of a kind. The cabin, although small, has been lovingly restored and decked out in a pleasingly simple and rustic style. The walk down to the nearby village of Lealholm makes you feel glad to be alive. The food at the Board Inn is top notch. Back at the cabin, relax in the farmyard setting with no noise to worry about other than the baaing of the lambs. The cabin was well equipped - the outdoor sink and shower block right nearby - and the host Aidan was helpful with information and friendly. A glass of wine on the veranda looking at that sweeping view of the splendour of nature - what more could you want?

Be careful with using apps to bring you to the site, as the postcode takes you to the wrong farm on top of a steep hill with a track that leads you to a locked gate. Which makes for interesting driving skills. I had to go on a map on Airbnb to find it, so perhaps more detailed directions by email beforehand would be good?

Fantastic place to stay, real unquie accomodation! Plenty to like about this place, electrical sockets, fire place, sofa, working TV & DVD player, provided bedding and towels, close to showers and toilets, fully stocked kitchen area with decent electric hobs and kettle. Great for a bit of luxury over the good old reliable tent!

The views are incredible! You just can't help to be blown away each time you see out the windows! The decking and outdoor furniture invites you to spend the evening watching over the view.

The owners were incredibly friendly and helpful! You can see this lodge has been a true passion project and is presented immaculately! Plenty of hot water in the shower blocks which are open whenever you need them, fridge and freezer was a plus with plenty of room.

We had no issues during our stay and both agree we'd be happy to return again!

The game larder was amazing! It was small but perfect for the 2 of us. It was equipped with everything we could need, including wood for the fire which kept us lovely and cosy during the windy evenings.
The cabin is advertised as having a small fridge which there wasn't but it wasn't really an issue as there is a full size fridge in the shower block which is only a short walk away.
The toliets and showers were kept clean during our stay and there was always plenty of hot water.
The views are absolutely stunning and the site is incredibly peaceful.
The owners introduced themselves and let us know where to find them and how to contact them if we needed anything and then left us to enjoy our stay.
We even had a very friendly cat come to visit us each morning and evening which was lovely.
We had a fantastic stay and would definitely recommend it to anyone wanting to get away from everything.

Local attractions

Smack bang in the middle of the North York Moors National Park, The Game Larder is a mere 20 minutes’ walk from the little village of Lealholm, oft hailed as the prettiest in all of Yorkshire. To explore the countryside on foot, begin a nearby scenic circular stroll along the banks of the Esk and around the dales and hills near the village, and end up on a hillside for some splendiferous views across the dales.

Over in Fryup valley there’s a bike hire service and a café, and plenty of traditional moorland villages including Rosedale, Goathland, Farndale, and Grosmont are within a 30-minute drive.

Whitby is the next obvious sightseeing choice, for Whitby Abbey and the Captain Cook Museum and its HMS Endeavour replica plus harbour, galleries, old pubs and award-winning seafood restaurants; if you’re with the tiddlers, swimming, rockpooling and fossil hunting along the seashore are topping options here too.

Must see

  • The Moors National Park Centre (2.4 miles)
  • Whitby Abbey (9.8 miles)
  • Dalby Forest Visitor Centre (13.5 miles)

National Trust

  • Bridestones, Crosscliff and Blakey Topping (12.9 miles)
  • Yorkshire Coast (14.5 miles)
