A stone's throw from the abbey
Beautiful location
Sunny morning

  • Basic site on a working farm overlooking Whitby and the North Sea
  • A five-minute drive from centre of Whitby, 35 minutes from Scarborough
  • Less than five minutes’ walk from brewery, beach and Whitby Abbey
When stays full of gothic drama push all the right buttons, head along to Abbey Farm Showfield, a family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from the centre of Whitby on the Yorkshire coast. This is a top spot for back-to-basics stays, as the site is set up with just Elsan and waste water points and a small toilet block. There are no showers, so it's best to come along prepared to embrace the simple life. The site’s well placed enough to more than make up for the simple facilities though – it’s less than five minutes’ walk to Whitby Brewery, Whitby Abbey and the top of the famed 199 Steps, and just a little over five minutes’ walk to the nearest beach. Those keen on stretching legs might like to set out on the Cleveland Way long-distance path (a 109-mile route joining Helmsley and Filey), which slinks past about 300 feet from the site. If something less lengthy appeals more, opt instead for a stroll into Whitby itself (a 10-minute walk or five-minute drive) for more beaches, an RNLI museum, the Captain Cook Memorial Museum (and HMS Endeavour replica) and whale-spotting boat trips. Be sure, while out and about, to pop into a fish and chip shop too – stomachs will be grateful.

  • This site has no on-site shower facilities.
  • The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. XL Bully, Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).
  • No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.
  • Please note that the toilet facilities are unisex.
  • This site is at the top of a cliff so it can get very windy at times. Please be careful when erecting tents, awnings and gazebos.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: This campsite was a fantastic location. Lots of open space. You are right next to the Abbey and you can hear the sea. Would just have a few more toilets and maybe a shower block.

Liked: Lovely, large site situated in a great location with fab views. Facilities for site let it down though. Capacity of campers were not catered for with toilet and other facilities. My daughter tried to use the toilets and found two blocked and the other been used as a changing room. Would be great if the site had showers and better toilets but as it stands I wouldn’t stay for more than a night. Beautiful location with great access to Whitby. The brewery nearby is fab too.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Right in the middle of everything. Whitby brewery next door and Whitby abbey right across the road. 199 steps leading down to the town. Lovely couple who greeted us and made conversation whenever we left the site. Couldn’t have been more helpful. Plenty of bins and the beach was about a 5 minute walk. Absolutely brilliant and will definitely be staying again !!

Disliked: No showers.

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked: As central as you can get in Whitby as long as you are OK with the Abbey steps. There is an alternative route which is a longer more gentle incline with great views over Whitby. Good honest site, now has toilet block, you get facilities as described, site is well maintained and access is good. Now added to our list of regular places to visit.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Great location with plenty of space to pitch up and have space with our dog. Friendly greeting from owners who gave us all info we needed. Wouldn’t definitely book again. On the top of a hill so be prepared for wind, we didn’t mind this though for the views.

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Really beautiful location, and the chap on the gate was friendly and welcoming. Next door brewery does excellent takeaway pizzas. Nice chilled vibe.

Disliked: The toilets were rank, but tbf we were staying during a busy weekend. It is extremely windy but that's what you get for being on a cliff top!

Liked: The location, access to Whitby, quietness on site, size of the site and availability of sea views.

Disliked: No showers on site would be my only negative, however we only stayed one night so wasn’t absolutely needed.

Local attractions

Not quite done with seaside days just yet? Make the 35-minute drive to Scarborough, farther south on the Yorkshire coast, where – as well as more sandy stretches – guests can explore the Scarborough Fair Collection, get adrenaline pumping at Luna Park, wander about the Italian gardens, and spy out the marine species at Sea Life Sanctuary. Turn away from the sea, then, for inland explores starting in the sprawling North York Moors National Park (10 minutes), which is home to Go Ape Dalby treetop courses (35 minutes) and the rides and animal shows at Flamingo Land (40 minutes). There’s a healthy dose of history to be had hereabouts too, with Ormesby Hall (40 minutes), Nunnington Hall (55 minutes), Rievaulx Terrace (one hour) and the spectacular Castle Howard (55 minutes) – famed double for Brideshead in both productions of Brideshead Revisited – within relatively easy reach.
