Morndyke: Exterior

General

  • Luxury shepherds’ huts in a quiet corner of a working farm
  • A 10-minute drive to Thirsk and 15 to North York Moors National Park
  • Child-free, dog-friendly site with a two-acre fishing lake

Mosey over to Morndyke, just outside Thirsk (10 minutes’ drive) in the stunning Yorkshire countryside, for a break at an award-winning glamping site. A stellar spot for a bit of silence, this park’s kid-free policy means no boisterous bairns are allowed.

As well as not toting the tiddlers along, there’s no need to tow a tent either: stays at this park, a 15-minute drive from the North York Moors, are in chic shepherd’s huts set next to a peaceful coarse fishing lake.

Each of the units looks out over miles’ worth of farmland, all the way up to the distant Hambleton Hills, and is named after the owners’ rescued sheep. They’re handcrafted to a high standard (the huts that is, not the sheep), with an ensuite bathroom including a shower and free Duck Island toiletries. There’s also a woodburning stove and a mini kitchen with a microwave, hot plate, kettle, toaster and cooking utensils.

Sit down for food on the fold-down table using the hut’s fancy Emma Bridgewater crockery, then curl up in the sheepskin-covered armchair to watch a DVD on the TV. When it’s naptime, get cosy in the double bed or single bunk with the Bronte by Moon blankets and cushions.

Weather looking good? Take a board game from the accommodation outside to play on your private patio, which has a firepit, barbecue, seating, a herb garden and a strawberry planter. If there’s anything else you need to pick up to make your evening go with a swing, check out the luxury goodies from Yorkshire at the site’s small shop.

We had a lovely stay at morndyke, the weather was really mild too for the time of year which meant we were able to enjoy the fire pit outside on an evening, the setting is really beautiful and we saw lots of wildlife from the window of our hut, accessing Morndyke was really easy thanks to Tricia’s helpful tips sent via email before our stay, the hut had absolutely everything we needed for our stay and was spotlessly clean! We felt so welcome with our dog too which is always a great bonus, we also visited the dog & gun in Knayton for a meal with our dog which was one of Tricia’s recommendations and it was delicious

The accommodation was cosy and unique and everything was amazing quality in the hut. Peaceful remote location with a beautiful Indian restaurant within walking distance, less than a mile away. Surrounding towns/villages were beautiful and plenty to explore.

The bird feeders outside the window in one of the huts was lovely, and we saw woodpeckers several times.

Once we had cleaned the wood burner, it was very cosy.

    Disliked:

The place was really dirty considering they employ professional cleaners. This included body hair in the shower and in the sink. Cobwebs on the ceiling in the main room. Greasy and tea stained crockery. There was even an old wine cork left on the corkscrew in the cutlery draw. The wood burning stove had not been emptied or cleaned, we had to clear this before it could be used.

The noise from the aerators in the fishing lake, which is turned on at night, disturbed us as you can hear it in the hut even with the windows and shutters closed. On the first night it starting just after 9pm and went off just before sunrise. On the second even we phone the owners and they turned it off until later that night.

When we emailed the owner to say about the state of the hut, we had a two line email back saying she would pass this on to the cleaning team, not even an apology.

Overall very disappointed with the cleanliness and customer service for somewhere that is almost £100 a night. We would never go back.
