  • Farm site near Boltby Forest, in the North York Moors National Park
  • Rievaulx Abbey 20 minutes’ drive; York an hour
  • Firepits and picnic benches; courtyard space with seats and hammock
High Paradise Farm is very much a wildlife haven. Sitting alongside Boltby Forest, in the North York Moors National Park, this site attracts hares, foxes and other beasties, but it’s also a nice place for guests (and their dogs) to find a base for their adventures, build stick houses in the forest or simply revel in the outdoor spaces. High Paradise is on the eight-mile band between Thirsk (10 minutes’ drive) and Helmsley (25 minutes), but don’t be fooled: the site is still rural. The roads leading to either of the nearby towns are narrow, twisty and a little bumpy, but it is well worth the journey, whether to visit The World Of James Herriot (Thirsk) or the National Centre for Birds of Prey (Helmsley). The skies are pretty special at night time, and it’s quiet here too, aside from the sound of birdsong. The facilities around the site include an amenities block with toilets, a shower and a dishwashing area that may come in handy after a firepit (each pitch has its own picnic bench and firepit). There’s also a chilled-out communal courtyard space with seats and a hammock. In Boltby (10 minutes), you’ll be able to pick your adventure – perhaps horse trekking with the local stables or picking up the long-distance Cleveland Way, which runs around the national park. For a pub trip, Hawnby (15 minutes) has just the place. There are a few other pubs within around 15 minutes’ drive of the site, and Helmsey’s eateries are a little further away.

What customers say

This campsite is praised for its beautiful, tranquil, and natural setting with stunning views, ideal for those seeking peace and quiet. Visitors highlight well-maintained, spacious pitches, often with provided fire pits and picnic benches. The on-site tea room and shop are frequently commended. Staff are described as friendly and helpful. While most reviews are overwhelmingly positive, a few minor criticisms include the basic nature and distance of some toilet and shower facilities. Access roads can also be bumpy.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked Quiet campsite. Pitches have lots of space and you can select your own. I didn't use it put the washing and honestly shop and courtyard sitting area which would shelter from rain. Plenty of hot water, and I liked that eco friendly shampoo etc was provided. Good info received via text pre arrival so had no problem knowing where to go. Price is good. Would return.

Disliked Some minor moans. Spotted quite a bit of dog poo left which was a shame.
Facilities are basic but functional, and as expected. I understand that you will get cobwebs and dust however most of the cobwebs are old and a quick run around with duster would hugely improve the appearance of the toilet block and give it less of the appeal of an old shed. Given the size of the pitches I was surprised that the amenities block was so tiny. This may be I do with planning permission in the national park. Getting dry from the shower resulted in a few scraped elbows.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked Was the second time here, and enjoyed it even more! It really is relaxing, safe and has amazing, beautiful scenery!

Stayed Wednesday night until Saturday morning with my 6 year old son and my dog. My son loved going off exploring on his bike and when we went on bike rides / walks!

The camp site was sadly pretty quiet first few nights, but became busier on Friday which was amazing to see! It really is an undiscovered gem of a camp site! I LOVE it!

Disliked Just wish we could have stayed longer!

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked Really liked the feel of this site, very relaxed and quiet. At the centre of the farm there was a lovely courtyard type area where there was a delicious tearoom and a very well equipped shop which if you are looking for fantastic quality meat for your BBQ, I’d definitely recommend buying from here which is stocked from the local butchers.
The owner was very friendly and so helpful, nothing was too much trouble. We received detailed (and very useful) information via text before the arrival and happy to talk us through the history of the site. Overall for us a family we thought it was a lovely site with lots of little impressive quirks and we would absolutely 100% attend again.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked This truly is Paradise! An absolutely beautiful place. Peaceful, clean, loads of facilities and the attention to detail is second to none. The owners are amazing hosts and very friendly as are the staff in the cafe. It’s also dog friendly and every camping pitch has a bench table and fire pit. There is a cafe and shop….. and not forgetting the dark skies to do some star gazing! …… seriously what’s not to like! ( I’m amazed that there are people in this world that can criticise such a place- they probably would find fault at Claridges lol 🤦🏼‍♀️….. we will
Definitely be back and I will come along in my own too!

Disliked Nothing to dislike!

Local attractions

The atmospheric ruins of Rievaulx Abbey (20 minutes’ drive) sit on the right bank of the River Rye. Established in the 12th century, this Cistercian abbey fell victim to Henry VIII’s dissolution of the monasteries in the 1530s. You can learn more about the building’s history in the museum, which exhibits masonry fragments and stone carvings. Are you in Yorkshire or Provence? You might find it difficult to tell the difference at Yorkshire Lavender (40 minutes), a 60-acre lavender farm in the Howardian Hills National Landscape. Themed areas include a lavender maze, a wildflower meadow and a Mediterranean garden, plus a sculptural recreation of a cricket match… Whether you’re into Vikings, railways or chocolate, York (an hour) has a museum for you. It’s also worth taking a stroll along the city walls and, of course, visiting the spectacular York Minster. Feeling fit? Climb the 275 steps to the top of the Central Tower for far-reaching views of the city.
