Tucked right alongside Boltby Forest in the North York Moors National Park, High Paradise Farm is very much a wildlife haven. Think hares doing sprints across the field at dawn, foxes conducting night meetings and a whole cast of other beasties going about their business. Guests (and their dogs) can conduct their own adventures such as building stick houses in the forest or simply taking in the peace and quiet, the trees and the big sky above. Getting to the site is also part of the adventure, as High Paradise Farm is on the eight-mile stretch between Thirsk (20 minutes’ drive) and Helmsley (25 minutes). The roads are proper North Yorkshire: narrow, twisty, a bit bumpy and full of character, but with surprise passing places. It only takes 20 minutes to reach The World Of James Herriot in Thirsk, reliving some of the vet drama from the author's life. Helmsley is a 25-minute drive away should you fancy watching falcons do dramatic dives at the National Centre for Birds of Prey – the other option being to stay on site and watch the local birds do it for free. The skies here are pretty special at night, with no light pollution and the occasional owl hooting. It’s quiet too, aside from birdsong in the morning. Each pitch has its own picnic bench and firepit. Facilities have been kept basic on purpose; there's a communal amenities block with toilets, a shower and a washing-up area and a communal courtyard with seats and a hammock. In Boltby, 10 minutes' drive away, pick your activity: horse trekking at the local stables or picking up the Cleveland Way for a long-distance moors walk followed by a visit to the pub in Hawnby (also 10 minutes away). More pubs are within 15 minutes' drive, and Helmsley has fancy eateries.

Em va agradar Really remote location. Very quiet!
The host was kind and welcoming, there is a nice cafe and communal area too.

The only thing to be aware of is the small pitches. The images make them look a bit bigger than they are. It was just right for our Tentbox and there were a couple of campers there too that fit their bays, if a little snug!

Em va agradar This is my 2nd time staying at High Paradise Farm, and once again, the kids absolutely loved it! It’s a proper back-to-basics, off-the-grid campsite where you can pitch pretty much wherever you like, with plenty of space and freedom.

Being able to head out and roam the Cleveland Way straight from the campsite makes it a fantastic place to get out into nature, spend quality time together and properly switch off from screens. It’s incredibly peaceful and feels miles away from everything — apart from the occasional couple of RAF Typhoons practising overhead last night! ✈️

Although it’s a basic campsite, it has everything you really need, including hot and cold running water, showers and good, clean toilets. The pitches are huge, and you have as much space as you could want.

The kids absolutely love this place, and it’s become one of those places where you can genuinely slow down, reconnect as a family and enjoy the outdoors.

We’ll definitely be coming back again! 🌿🏕️

Em va agradar Beautiful quiet setting. Large pitches, the tables a lovely touch. Camping among the trees a real highlight. The food onsite and the walks immediately on hand were fabulous. Staff and ownership welcoming, accommodating, and helpful. Food and coffee fabulous. Couldn't recommend higher.

Em va agradar Great pitches with plenty of space between tents. Like the trees dotted around between pitches. Great farmland views. The horse box shower was fun. All the facilities worked well for us. Peaceful 3 night stay. Excellent walks and bike rides straight from the campsite. Ginny was very helpful and we enjoyed having chats with her in the cafe.

The atmospheric ruins of Rievaulx Abbey (20 minutes’ drive) sit on the right bank of the River Rye. Established in the 12th century, this Cistercian abbey fell victim to Henry VIII’s dissolution of the monasteries in the 1530s. You can learn more about the building’s history in the museum, which exhibits masonry fragments and stone carvings. Are you in Yorkshire or Provence? You might find it difficult to tell the difference at Yorkshire Lavender (40 minutes), a 60-acre lavender farm in the Howardian Hills National Landscape. Themed areas include a lavender maze, a wildflower meadow and a Mediterranean garden, plus a sculptural recreation of a cricket match… Whether you’re into Vikings, railways or chocolate, York (an hour) has a museum for you. It’s also worth taking a stroll along the city walls and, of course, visiting the spectacular York Minster.
