  • Farm site near Boltby Forest, in the North York Moors National Park
  • Rievaulx Abbey 20 minutes’ drive; York an hour
  • Firepits and picnic benches; courtyard space with seats and hammock
High Paradise Farm is very much a wildlife haven. Sitting alongside Boltby Forest, in the North York Moors National Park, this site attracts hares, foxes and other beasties, but it’s also a nice place for guests (and their dogs) to find a base for their adventures, build stick houses in the forest or simply revel in the outdoor spaces. High Paradise is on the eight-mile band between Thirsk (10 minutes’ drive) and Helmsley (25 minutes), but don’t be fooled: the site is still rural. The roads leading to either of the nearby towns are narrow, twisty and a little bumpy, but it is well worth the journey, whether to visit The World Of James Herriot (Thirsk) or the National Centre for Birds of Prey (Helmsley). The skies are pretty special at night time, and it’s quiet here too, aside from the sound of birdsong. The facilities around the site include an amenities block with toilets, a shower and a dishwashing area that may come in handy after a firepit (each pitch has its own picnic bench and firepit). There’s also a chilled-out communal courtyard space with seats and a hammock. In Boltby (10 minutes), you’ll be able to pick your adventure – perhaps horse trekking with the local stables or picking up the long-distance Cleveland Way, which runs around the national park. For a pub trip, Hawnby (15 minutes) has just the place. There are a few other pubs within around 15 minutes’ drive of the site, and Helmsey’s eateries are a little further away.

What customers say

This campsite offers a peaceful, back-to-nature experience in a beautiful woodland setting with stunning views, directly accessible to the Cleveland Way and numerous walking routes. Guests consistently praise the friendly and welcoming staff, the well-spaced pitches with fire pits and picnic benches, and the excellent on-site tearoom and shop. While facilities are described as basic and rustic, they are generally found to be clean, functional, and adequate for an eco-friendly site. Some minor points of feedback include occasional difficulties with pitch access for larger vehicles and a preference for slightly later check-out times.

Primrose non-electric forest floor motorhome pitch (large)

Liked Nothing

Disliked The pitches are described as large. Unless you are turning up in a matchbox car they are not large we left after 20 minutes trying to fit in the small pitch and if we set out our roof tent we would of blocked the road to the next pitch. Don't stay here unless you fancy disappointment. This campsite is a lot more expensive compared to nice nearby campsites. I asked for a refund and they emailed me back calling me a keyboard warrior

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked Gorgeous setting.
Great tea room on site.
Fire pit and picnic bench with every pitch.
Woodland setting.
Plenty of space.
Rustic but perfectly adequate loo/shower facilities.
Friendly, helpful owner (Ginny).

Disliked Minor grumble - 10am is a bit early to be off site on a Sunday morning. 11am would probably be much appreciated by the majority of campers.

Bluebell non-electric forest floor motorhome pitch (XL)

Liked It was quiet.

Disliked If we didn't have 2 small children with us who needed dinner and bed, we would have left as soon as we arrived. The turning to get into the campervan pitches was extremely tight and the 'XL' pitch barely fitted our people carrier in. There was no one to speak to when we arrived, we just had to figure out where our pitch was. We felt disappointed before we got started. This was supposed to a treat - at a premium price of £50 a night!!!! - but left a sour taste in our mouths as we felt like we'd been misled.

In the morning, be prepared to be eaten alive by bugs.

Local attractions

The atmospheric ruins of Rievaulx Abbey (20 minutes’ drive) sit on the right bank of the River Rye. Established in the 12th century, this Cistercian abbey fell victim to Henry VIII’s dissolution of the monasteries in the 1530s. You can learn more about the building’s history in the museum, which exhibits masonry fragments and stone carvings. Are you in Yorkshire or Provence? You might find it difficult to tell the difference at Yorkshire Lavender (40 minutes), a 60-acre lavender farm in the Howardian Hills National Landscape. Themed areas include a lavender maze, a wildflower meadow and a Mediterranean garden, plus a sculptural recreation of a cricket match… Whether you’re into Vikings, railways or chocolate, York (an hour) has a museum for you. It’s also worth taking a stroll along the city walls and, of course, visiting the spectacular York Minster. Feeling fit? Climb the 275 steps to the top of the Central Tower for far-reaching views of the city.
