  • Family-run site on a working farm between the Dales and Ribble Valley
  • Farm park and playground on site (tickets must be prebooked)
  • 20 minutes' drive to Skipton Castle and Pendle Hill; 30 to Malham Cove
Get away to this peaceful site: Thornton Hall Country Park lies on the borders of Lancashire and Yorkshire, a landscape of stone bridges and deep forests, wild moors and hills. Here, there are plenty of trails nearby, as well as regular starry night skies. Staying at Thornton Hall Country Park means that you get 50% off the entry cost to the on-site children's farm park (on non-event days), where there is a splendid soft play, farm animals to 'ooh' over and family events. There's a packed schedule of daily activities in the farm park, from collecting eggs to handling rabbits and guinea pigs. The farm park's outdoor and indoor playgrounds ensure the Pennines weather never interferes with plans, and anyone still chasing thrills after descending the many slides in the soft play can head to the jumping pillows for more action. Away from the farm park, the site's facilities are mightily convenient, with modern toilet and shower facilities at hand. You're welcome to bring barbecues and sizzle your sausages while the sun sets and the cows settle to sleep. For other supplies, the café (open from 10am to 4pm) sells hot and cold food, snacks, desserts and hot and cold drinks (just as well, as you'll need a full tank for what's in store); takeaway is sometimes available too.

What customers say

This is a well-maintained and clean campsite, praised for its beautiful views, peaceful atmosphere and spacious pitches. Staff are consistently described as friendly and helpful. The on-site farm is a highlight for families with young children. However, some visitors noted that the toilet and shower facilities can be limited during busy periods, and the outdoor play area is only accessible with farm entry.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked The view. The quietness. Big pitches. All very tidy in appearance.

Disliked The showers and toilets were like the kind you see when builders are converting a property and sit a portaloo outside. Tiny and no way of dressing after a shower without wetting your clothes. Clean so it was fine. £6 for WiFi seemed excessive after the plot fee.

Electric grass pitch

Liked The place was lovely. It was very clean, it had maintenance on the site all the time. All the staff were lovely and helpful. Was a lot of open space for the kids to play. The farm on site was lovely and plenty to do for all my boys ages 2,6 and 13. The food was also lovely in the play area. Would definitely return.

Disliked My only down side was the price of the farm and play area. As it is literally where you camp and when you have a very challenging 6 year old that wants to go play in the play area and on the outdoor park all the time it’s hard to explain that yes the park is right there but you have to pay for the farm to go play on it. We did pay twice to go on the farm but once we went back to the tent after the farm closed my child was still wanting to play on the outdoor park which wasn’t accessible and had signs stating you’d be asked to leave if anyone was seen on it. I know it’s not a major issue at all, it just would be lovely if the outdoor park was accessible until later on and open especially on the light summer nights.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Lovely and well maintained level pitches, great size with plenty of space. We travelled as a group and was allocated neighbouring pitches. Thouroughly enjoyed our stay

Disliked Not a lot to dislike, if anything I’d say not quite enough facilities (toilets/showers)

Electric grass pitch

Liked Access to the farm park
Small

Disliked Facilities not the best, only 3 toilets and 2 showers for the entire campsite

Only a small outdoor, uncovered washing up area
We had no electricity for a couple of hours and nothing was communicated to us.
They say no noise after 8pm however they had an event on in the secret garden which was very loud until 11pm.

Local attractions

Miles of circular path steeped in the mystery of the Pendle witches and the romance of the Brontë sisters, the Pendle Way passes through the farm. If you don't fancy the 45-mile full monty, sections of trail take you up Pendle Hill, or through Wycoller, the inspiration for Jane Eyre. You can also walk a chunk of the Pennnine Way from Thornton village, passing over Elsack Moor and down into the old village of Lothersdale. Skipton (15 minutes' drive) has a 12th-century castle that's hung onto its roof and dungeon through centuries of strife. The adjacent wood is the remnant of the ancient forests that once covered all of Yorkshire – it's full of trails and if you're lucky you'll spot kingfishers, herons and buzzards. Skipton is a handy spot for hiring bikes and taking boat trips down the Leeds-Liverpool Canal. Head to the Pendle Heritage Centre in Barrowford (20 minutes) to uncover the murky legends and the even murkier truths of the 17th-century Pendle Witch trials. Wizard fans should be sure to visit Malham Cove (half an hour), the massive cliffs featured in Harry Potter films. Finish off by following the trail to Janet's Foss, a waterfall said to be home to the Queen of the Fairies. Out here, it's not hard to believe it.
