General

  • Wild riverside camping field near Malham in the Yorkshire Dales
  • A 10-minute drive to Malham Cove, Janet’s Foss and Gordale Scar
  • On the route of the Pennine Way; country pub 10 minutes' walk

After a rural stay with spectacular Yorkshire Dales views, endless access to the great outdoors, amazing landmarks and proper Dales towns? Kirkby Malham Camping hits the spot with you then – a blissfully peaceful, pop-up campsite on a working family-run beef and sheep farm in gorgeous Malhamdale.

With acres of space for kids and dogs to run around in safely, the Aire river edging the field and a choice of a welcoming country pub or the delights of Malham village centre within 10 minutes' walk, this site – known to the owners as “Mucky Bottoms” (yes, really) – offers the chance for walkers, cyclists and rock climbers to explore the magnificent limestone scenery around Malham.

Portaloos, a supply of water and bins are available for your stay, but for most of the year the field is grazed by sheep – and they would really appreciate it if you left the field as you found it. During your stay, sheep will be in neighbouring fields and they really don’t like being chased, so please make sure your dogs are under control.

The long-distance Pennine Way runs alongside the campsite, and there are lots of very accessible walks – plus of course the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge. If you are participating, Pen-y-ghent beckons a half-hour’s drive away.

I nearly didn't book as Pitchup said 2 places left and I thought was going to be too busy. We was the only ones in the field so could make as much laughing as we wanted. We took our own drinking water as the water is provided but in a large container. As described a field, grass longish, so no bowling with portaloo toilets. We are used to wild camping so toilets a bonus. Less than 25 min walk to Malam cove and 10-15 walk to local pub. Defo stay again if we are in the area. Amazing star gazing 😍

Way too expensive for night in a sheep field29/07/2021

A quiet night as I was the only camper on the site (I now know why!)

    Disliked:

I booked this as it fitted in with the daily mileage of a cycling tour. £20 for a solo cyclist pitch is a con, especially when considering the field is actively full of sheep and the only facility is a Portaloo. I have been staying in campsites with AMAZING facilities, showers, WiFi, well kept grass, device charging, drinking water, drying room etc for £6 a night. I don’t know if the owners have opportunistically bumped up the price due to covid but this ‘campsite’ is a scam. If this site was £4 a night it wouldn’t seem so bad.

I was told via text after asking that the large plastic water tank had been stagnant for a while so would need boiling before drinking. As a cyclist touring I’d expect drinking water from a campsite at this price, instead of having to waste stove fuel just to boil water.

The listing implies the field is set to a private stretch of river. This is not the case. There is a path between the field and the river. It was busy with dog walkers and ramblers, detracting from the remote feel.

I would suggest the owners lower the price to reflect what is offered, as I feel ripped off.

This should not be sold as a camp site in any way or means. Please do not book the description is completely misleading on pitchup.com

I will be going ahead and making a formal complaint to the council if the website does not take any action and review the site. I am also seeking to get my booking money back at all costs. We ended up paying double as we were stuck with nowhere to go 2.5 hours away from our house with 3 young children.
